If they tried to charge for an ending-fix, they would be hung, drawn and quartered in the court of public opinion. The existence of the Extended Cut is a clear yet veiled admission of fault on behalf of Bioware; attempting to profit from it would be seen as highly questionable.

Providing it for free makes them look like the good guys.

There's no easy way to say this but lets be honest here.... there's just no way BioWare can do what [really] needs to be done in the space of couple of months with no [real] budget in a way that can satisfy either the [core] fanbase or the wider audience. They've already said there will be no new gameplay. Presumably little to no new voice work either.

Trust me I get that Mass Effect 3 will have paid for itself by now and that the funding for the EC will have to come out of this and they're certainly not doing this out of charity... but rather than be palmed off with what they can cobble together under the circumstances wouldn't you rather pay for a proper expansion with new voice acting and gameplay, etc?

Wouldn't you rather give BioWare the opportunity to bring the games' closing sequence closer to what they originally intended with war-assets and cameos and such rather than settle for this? IMO BioWare should budget what they really need to make this happen and charge accordingly for it [within reason]. The question is how would a paid EC differ... would it be worth it... could it be justified? What would you pay for/it?

Edit: Artistic Integrity aside extending the existing ending is the cheaper option of the two all things considered. Creating a whole new 'Priority: Earth' sequence for free probably wouldn't have been feasible. I ask you how would Broken Steel have turned out if that had been free? It couldn't have been done... certainly not like that. It was 'paid ending dlc' but it arguably salvaged the entire fanchise.

It may be free but will it be as good or as ambitious as if it had been paid dlc? Will it be enough to salvage the franchise?

Look up 'loss leader'.

The money spent will be recouped by future profits from fans' whose affection for the franchise/company can be regained.

with all the real money people spend on MP packs Bioware has the money to make the DLC.

Nope. They sold an incomplete game.

Also, anyone remember Day 1 DLC? Yeahhhhh....they made a killing with that. More than offsets the cost of developing the Ext Cut.

They have said/confirmed nothing of the sort.

Bioware knows that much depends on the EC. That is why there are no promises/confirmations this time around.

And just IMHO but this franchise does not need salvaging.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Since they made a mistake with the ending, they should be willing to freely "clarify" their mistake. Also, CD projekt offered a free patch for the witcher 2 that added HOURS of gameplay and story. If they can do that, then why can't Bioware do the same?

No, you paid for it. Depending on which way you got the d1 dlc you either over paid for it or just underpaid a little bit.

It does.  But, and take it for what you will, Gamble, via Twitter, had said right after PAX that nothing was certain yet.

I would've been willing to pay extra for a new ending if Bioware just came out and admitted that they made a mistake the first time and were willing to rework it.

And I'm sure I'm not alone in those feelings.

pretty much this.

Nope, not as far as I can see, unless we're looking at something different.

They're in the post-production stage apparently, and there have been various tweets neither confirming or denying the possibility.

It's all up in the air right now.

Should be free, shouldn't waste tens of millions of dollars on marketing and just focus on making a great game.

Gamers can be a game developer/publisher's best friend or greatest enemy, ME 3 and the fans reaction has illustrated this perfectly. The way i've been treated as a fan, is insulting, not that i expect to be catered to personally, but the PR to us from bioware/EA, on top of "artistic vision" as a valid defense is bull sh*t.

it's not that EA believes in bioware's 'artistic vision' its that EA wants to stick to their original business/marketing plans for the game. Im not going to compromise for a company that innovates only on the business/marketing side of gaming at my expense instead of actually making an innovative and quality product that would speak for itself.

Im a consumer, not a commodity, and i do not like being openly treated as expendable.

This thread is the reason why DLC works so well today.

The budget being blown on the EC isnt for DLC, its to save the franchise. Think of it as emergency surgery for Mass Effect 3

If it is not free, I will not buy it until I see what's in there. If it is good, I will buy it and continue buying from Bioware. If it is not, then whether free or paid, it's bye bye Bioware and Mass Effect till they actually release a good game.

I ain't reading through all the pages but in essence isn't the extended cut just going to put in the scenes removed from the retail version that make sense of what happened?

How about bioware pay me for waiting for the game to be completed months after I got it.

It is simple. Due to the incomplete/bad ending, ME3 is not a great product (as evidenced by the amount of complaing from the customers). If they do not fix it, I cannot assume that Dragon Age 3 will be a good product. Therefore I won't buy Dragon Age 3 when it first comes out, I'll wait for reviews first, and by that time might as well wait a few more weeks and buy it half off. Profit margins for games are not that big, customers only willing to buy at half of the retail price will cost them a lot of money.

EA/Bioware can tell me to screw myself if they want. But I don't owe them my loyalty and I don't have to buy their future games. Apple and Blizzard know that if you take your time to make great products, customers will happily pay a premium, resulting in very fat profit margins. And more importantly, their customers will happily buy future products even though they don't know what it is yet.
