Wouldn't mind a mix between open world and closed, enough open world that the world feels "alive" but closed enough in that the plot isn't lost in the transition. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 was pretty good at it.

BG2 worked the same as every BioWare game since.  You could travel wherever you wanted, as long as the game had already told you explicitly to go there.

There was no way to find D'Arnise Hold without Nalia first telling you about it, for example.

BG was different.  BG let you stumble upon things you had no reason to know were there.  Rather than not being available until Minsc or Edwin told you about it, you could find the Gnoll Stronghold right away despite having no quest-related reason to do so.

That's what I want back.  I want BG-style open exploration.  They've done in two games ever - BG and ME - and I really enjoy it.

If you want an example of a game world far more open and explorable than DA/DA2 but not nearl as expansive as Skyrim, take a look at Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Its large enough and contiguous to allow for more open exploration and a load of side quests, but not nearly as large as Skyrim.

And for the record, the main quest never got lost in Skyrim either because they were such big events. Instead of Bioware telling "a story", there should be lots for stories to tell, beyond just the main quest story line.

Not in Dragon Age. Less linear environments that are more bigger would be nice though. Maybe make it like The Witcher (although I haven't played through much of that yet, I'm still in the first part and it feels big.)

EDIT: Or they could make it like the first BG game. I didn't think of that.

Ideally, all games should be open world, or 'sandboxy'. So basically yes.
However, you have to see what you get on your budget, and what aspects are most important for the game you want to do.
With the current hardware (consoles) and the kind of archaic development tools and methods Bioware seem to employ Posted Image, - no, DA3 should not be "open-world".

No not in the context of these games, however large open level designs are fine.

Andraste's holy knickers...no. Open world is fine for games like Skyrim and Fallout. I actually dislike open world games for the same reason most people like them. There is way too much to do. I've had Skyrim since it released and I still have yet to finish one play through. I don't like to finish the main story without completing all current quests in my journal. It's rather hard to avoid a lot of the side quests altogether.

I'd like it to be a bit like Final Fantasy 11 or 12. Where it's all one big world, but separated by zones. And if they want it to take place in more than 1 country, have ship travel or some kind of "taxi" service (like Morrowind). Having it all in one world would limit environments too much I think, and we all know how limited environments worked out for DA2.

Yeah, because it makes a lot more sense to pay the same $60 one would for Skyrim, but instead of playing a game for 200+ hours its over in 30. Instead of DLC that add 40 hours, we get 4 at best. All for what? A story? How's that story work out in DA2? How does that story compare with the cost of a book or a movie?

If you're interested in a story, but one of the novels. If you want a game, then demand a game with the same level of quality as the rest of the market,

I don't think DA3 should be open world on the scale of the Elder Scrolls or Fallout games. I feel quite confident in saying that the majority of Bioware's fans like their games for the story and characters. Its hard to do those things properly in open world. You need some structure.

However DA3 could certainly use more exploration than DA2 had. Finding the correct balance is important but its something that Bioware usually get right.

They're 1 for 2 on DA, 1 for 3 on ME, and batting zero on SWTOR.  I don't think the post EA acquisition track record is that the usually get anything right.

rather than vast areas with nothing to do i'd prefer:
- very differents landscape from one place to an other
- cinematic when first entering a map (people's impressions, their knowledge of the place, people greeting you in cities...) like when you take the boat to go to the mage academy, or come back to the village where the golem was found and it start crushing the birds,
- there were many events in dao maps, while you mostly walk in skyrim
the strongest part of da is its story, its narrative, an open world might desolve it (skyrim is very immersive but i get bored fast)
in dao thought the story was rich and directive you had a lot of freedom :
-----------------finding items, finding out who was that old man in the dalish forest, choosing wicth side to follow (elf or werewolf), you could choose witch quest to start first (mages, elfs, dwarf.) .........

bigger landscape will always be welcome but keep the map, in dao it gives that journey feeling, a more detail map (bridge, rivers...)would be nice

My perfect DA3 would be:

1. The environments of Skyrim, oh the hours I can lost myself in trying to decorate my house, the beautiful environment. And most importantly the side-quest system in Elder Scroll. You get thrown into sidequests that feels organic and not like in DA2 where you are just a dog playing fetch.

2. The combat of Kingdoms of Amalur. The absolute best combat system I have played for... ever. Die "A = Awesome"!!! Die!!!

3. The storyline of Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect.

p/s: And get rid of the radar maps >.<" I like to stumble upon ancient ruins and explore instead of click here, teleport there.

Nah if I want an open world game I'll play something like Skyrim

As long as DA3 has richly designed, dynamic environments and a good story I will be very happy. But give me another dull, lifeless Kirkwall, repeated environments, and a story where my choices don't matter and I will be quite done with the franchise.

Only if the open world is similar to the open world you find in Diablo. Open world gameplay from something like Elder Scrolls can leave people wandering aimlessles and not know where to go to to complete their quests.

I'm all for exploration, but keep it in a contained space. They could do the randomly generated dungeons and fields that Blizzard have done too, to keep it interesting.

Diablo is open enough without it being boring.

I wouldn't want a open-world to the extent of Skyrim, but I would like to be able to explore after the ending. It adds a lot more gameplay time. :)

I think DA:O had the best mix of open world and scripted story-telling we had.

Let's go back to that and draw from that.

What I essentially need in a game (in most cases) is a feeling of exploration. This was apparent also in DA:O - so it doesn't necessarily need very loose bounds to allow for "seeing distant unfamiliar land(scape)s".

Hmm. I enjoy good sandbox games/open world games in general, and it's not like a good sandbox game can't have a good, engaging story (see Assassins Creed II), but I can't really see how DA could become more Oblivion/Skyrim-like without sacrificing the story. I think DA universe has always been about the story, but when you play games like Skyrim or Assassins Creed that's not why you're there for in the long run.

I actually liked the direction MotA took: big maps with as little railroading as possible (unlike the Wounded Coast/Sundermount maps, for example). Make them a bit bigger, stuff more quests in there and I'm a happy gamer! DAO went a bit overboard with this, sometimes (read: the Deep Roads), but mostly... yes, I'd like to see it make a return in DAIII.

Also, less Kirkwall twins/triplets crowding the streets (and for the love of the Maker, please stop with the weird makeup. Poor Orana...).

Maybe a little bit,but on the scale of a Skyrim or Oblivion, but if they make some room for a little free roam why not.It might even give more people a reason to buy DA3.

I don't really liked open-world sandboxes. That's why I hate people comparing DA to Skyrim. They're apples and oranges.

If you want to play a sandbox RPG, play Skyrim. If you want to play a well developed story, play Dragon Age. But if you won't be able to put the freedom and openness of Skyrim into Dragon Age without sacrificing story.

I dont necessarily think open world is a good or bad idea.....but I think it would be REALLY cool to be able to travel to Antiva, Orlais, Freleden, Free Marches and all over Thedas, maybe involve a quinari city?
