So I feel the need to
express something to the Mass Effect community and in so doing
hopefully reach the writers of the Mass Effect trilogy. For me, when
I heard about the Mass Effect game and the story line involved, I was
hugely appreciative that a games creator had taken the time to fill
the genre I love most, science fiction.
For years I had played
fantasy games mostly involving swords and spiky hair with the
occasional first person shooter. As a little pointer I am in my
forties have have played electronic games for the very start and
marvelled at their development. For me Mass Effect was the only game
that I took a break from WoW for and I soon found out so did my guild
mates. I have enjoyed the experience of playing through the games and
have racked up many hundreds of hours playing at all levels. However
it went further than that by discussing for numerous hours via skype
with friends in far flung countries what could possibly be
Sovereigns/Harbinger and the reaper message, was their a further
controlling force in action.
I would like to note
that the Mass Effect Trilogy has been crafted beautifully, characters
fleshed out, music emotive with a believable backdrop all lovingly
created. A little side note that when the music played on ME2 during
the suicide mission I actually "Whooped" with excitement,
sat up straight on cracked my knuckles for the pain I was about to
unleash. Building or breaking relationships, being paragon or
renegade, developing your character through your game play. Slowly
drawing you in and building momentum to the final part of the
trilogy. This was the anticipation that a well told story had
created.
With great anticipation
I bought my ME3 game and played through to the bitter end, watching
the destruction of worlds I had grown to love and the feeling that a
beautiful end would be hard fought and won. The ending I have to say
does not fit with the narrative of previous games. Shephard is driven
and determined whether paragon or renegade. When you read a book it
has a beginning, middle and a final conclusion, even if that
conclusion is to leave a further question hanging there. It is
however a definitive conclusion to the episodes past even if there is
a feeling of something else brooding in the wings, unseen and more
malevolent.
As such I believe that
the writers of mass effect 3 took a leaf out of Deus Ex with the
three option path giving a so called moral choice to the game player.
As a piece of space opera writing this was a weak choice. They fell
back on a previous game mechanic instead of giving a conclusion to
the story, even if doubts were left on the true controller of the
Reapers intentions. As a reader, writer of the science fiction genre
and a gamer I found myself dissatisfied with the ending sequence, it
was not what I consider an appropriate end to the efforts of the
characters involved, rather a hollow epitome of we aren't quite sure
how to end this.
And so I come to find
myself dreaming of the possible ending of Mass Effect trilogy and
creating a better ending to the story so far. My Shephard like
everyone else's is driven and only the end of the Reapers would
justify the hardships and pain we have fought through. As for the
dark nemesis that created the Reapers, well that is for me to enjoy
and expand in me dreams. This time the Reapers were wrong I will be
me salvation, there is a realm of existence beyond ME3 story were
confidence born of ignorance that has created a circle of copying
Deus Ex ending will be broken. The pattern has repeated itself. I am
the Vanguard of creativity, biological life is born of creativity and
we are legion, so make your own ending.
But remember that if
you post it here it can be used by Bioware so be aware. I choose not
to post my ideas here they can read my books if they need ideas.

(Punctuation was not considered during this process, proofreader does that for me and after a bottle of rather nice Chardonnay, I don't care. I may revise and edit later.)
The cycle can be broken
