Why do people keep assuming bows were broken?

Because of this  http://dragonage.gul...rity_hotfix_101

"* Ranged Weapon hit rate increased.
  * Bow range has been increased by 10m on all ranged weapons (not staff), reducing the penalties for ranged shots in most most combat scenarios.
  * All bows and crossbows now grant a +5 inherit Attack bonus. Note that this bonus is shown on the weapon, it does not factor into the characters Attack displayed score on the character sheet.

* Short bow being useless.
  * Short bows now get full attribute bonus from Dexterity instead of shared from Strength. This makes them a natural choice for Dexterity focused character builds.
  * Base Armor Penetration for Shortbows has been increased by 1.

* Ranged weapon damage has been increased:
  * Damage range on all ranged weapons has been increase from 150% to 160%.
  * Critical chance bonus on all ranged weapons has been increased by 4%.
  * Damage bonus from attributes has been increased from 100% to 100/105% for bows and 110% for crossbows."

I love this fix. It makes the NPCs harder and makes your archer better. The game is way to easy default, it's great that enemy archers actually pose a threat now.

Guys, bows weren't bugged. THey were just flat out horrible, missed a lot and barely did any damage.  Basically out of all the classes you'd want to be in Dragon age an archer was the last thing you'd want to be damage wise.

Archery wasn't bugged it was just HORRIBLY weak lol :P

Georg's hotfix addressed the issues very well. I 'm just hoping he'd do this for 1.02.

I wonder if I can edit the files myself.. hmm

Well, the word "fix" has multiple meanings. One can reasonably speak of "fixing" bows even if they aren't bugged. For example, the new patch "fixes" Cone of Cold even though there was no bug with it.

Sorry, I'm pedantic. It rebalances CoC.

One reason str would add damage to a bow is you could use a higher poundage bow string. That is, the string is much more "tight" and harder to pull back, thus flinging the arrow at a more deadly speed. Course the game never shows you restringing your bow with a tighter string, but I've always assumed that's why it's the way it is.

Hold on.. Bioware even POSTED on the old forums that Bows "didn't work as intended".. That means bugged to me.

So yes they didn't work as intended (straight from Bioware), and therefore the question remains, were they fixed. Answer is no, it appears.

Oh, and stop trying to rationalize why a stat should add to damage or not and if its realistic. They already said they don't care about realism only about gameplay. Amen.

Patches take time.

Nathalork666 wrote...

In the patch notes the first thing listed is a fix to daggers.

Now you get .5 damager per dex and strength. Not just the 1 point per strength.

But what about the bows?

Im assuming its fixed too...at least I hope....

You will notice that nothing here is actualy -broken-  .The hotfix changes the way bows work, but that doen't mean they were bugged.  That is like saying the higher rsoltuion texture pack "fixes" all the "broken" textures in the game.

I'm disappointed that crossbows weren't fixed (no dex bonus to damage).

Luckily, I updated my personal hotfix to work with 1.02 (with file that fixed only X-bows, since daggers are already fixed by patch).

Will having 1.02 and dexterity hotfix cause a conflict? If so, how do we deal with this.

hahahaha well you obviously don't relate "Short bow being useless" to "broken" like I and many others do.

"useless" = "broken"

I don't see how "mostly inferior to another item, that has higher stat requirements and costs more" equates to "broken".

Is heavy armor "broken" because it protects less than massive armor?

Yes.

You uninstall it and wait for a new version.

Well, it all depends what changes patch 1.02 did to files overridden with hotfix. If it changed something else, it could get lost if you apply hotfix based on 1.01 version of file.

Bows were never bugged, they just sucked as a specialty.Sure they worked great for Leliana in keeping her out of harms way while she activates Bard buffs for the party and deactivates traps/picks locks but IMO they're pretty lacking as a specialty for a main character build.

Personally,I feel that bows were over-balanced.Making bows low damage (low base damage/immune to party-based weapon enchantment spells/incompatible with runes and the long term cost of elemental arrows are extremely high in comparison to grandmaster runes for melee weapons and they're a lot less effective) to compensate for the advantage of range and lower threat from enemy attacks due to range is one thing...but once you factor in slow attack speed, frequent misses, and a lack-luster talent tree you end up with an area of specialization that most players will opt to avoid as an exclusive character build.

Sure min/maxers can squeeze some decent damage out of an exclusive bow build by late-mid to end game but that doesn't make it anymore of a viable option for the majority of players. Many of the archery talents are either ineffective or their penalties outweigh their effects.I'd say that the hotfix brought a little more diversity to a pro-archery build as well as making short bows useful thus justifying their existence in the game.

She's doing some 480 dmg with her old "friend's" longbow at level 18 without any hotfix. Did she do better with a shortbow and hotfix?

Is this fix still going to be properly implemented at some point as it did not appear with 1.03 and I was just wondering? The hit rate with bows is quite frustrating whilst trying to play an archer

It is a curious assumption you folks are making that bows are not "bugged". Ok, bows are not bugged. Dex then is the bug. Many of you report a low hit rate with bows. Don't you wonder why? Dexterity is supposed to add ranged hit on a 1-1 ratio. Now, get on Awakenings and make 2 rogues one with max dex and one with 36 dex and the rest in str or even all str. Equip a bow on each and look at your attack or to hit as you prefer calling it. What do you see? They are the same aren't they. Dex is not doing everything it should be is it? Case closed.
