however forcefield is by itself only a "problem" if you make it a "problem" because the mobs do not use it and you are in no way forced to use it yourself. i did not have the spell in my first run through and the only time i used it for my second run was in the fight against Ser Cautrien to have a chance of beating her ... in a fight which you are not really meant to win.

How do you figure not meant to win? Do you figure Bioware was expecting people that fought her at that point to just quit and start a new game? :P

Attacking Tethoril in Candlekeep in Baldur's Gate is a fight you were not meant to win.

lol i tried to beat her for 6 hours on my first run because i kept reloading the whole time ... i only found out that this is not the standard "game over" situation because there is a whole new chapter if you loose the fight and a funny one i might add, many prefer the give up or to loose just because of that. sure i beat her on my second run when i knew what to expect but even that was with some difficulty ... more than in standard fights.

An alternative approach would be to try to retain the combo as a valid tactic, but reduce its effectiveness, as follows:
1. Reduce the FF duration when cast on party members (but retain the cool-down). The duration must be such that even a party with three mages is unable to FF lock the fourth party member.
2. Increase mana cost of casting FF
3. Caster unable to perform any other activity while maintaining the FF
4. FF takes longer to cast (like e.g. chain lightning)
There may even be an argument for not allowing friendly spells on the FF'd party member (although that would prevent the FF + heal tactic).

Lol why not just taking it out of the game?

The only thing I would really like to see changed about ff is I want to be able to cast crushing prison on a ff'd friendly.

Taunt -> FF -> Fireball -> Crushing Prison -> :o

the spell is fine as it is. the AI however should ignore people in forcefield unless it's the only one left standing. it can then attempt to dispell it. forcefield on companion should be a last second rescue from dying. not a way to gather enemies for large nukes.

It would still be open to abuse because it could then be used to wipe aggro from a mage.  So lob a stun or knock down spell followed by Inferno, then FF yourself and everything just stands there and dies...

Remember fighting Gunther Hermann in the Battery Park if you choose not to help Paul in his apartment in Hell's Kitchen? Now, THAT was a fight you weren't meant to win.

Beating Ser Cauthrien is absolutely possible. Just difficult. But certainly not more difficult than beating Drizzt Do'Urden in Baldur's Gate (I still don't know how to beat him without cheesing, actually).

It is but if you don't want to run you really do need a Mage to do it 'properly' (ie dumb frontal charge). Its the only fight in the game that is like that.

There's nothing bad about retreating. Actually, staying in front of all those archers is a very dumb decision. The only problem is that in some cases that crowd doesn't follow you when you retreat to one of the rooms down the hallway, so it feels like cheesing. If you cast Blood Wound, however, or something similarly aggressive, they will, so you'll be able to beat Ser Cauthrien and her guards in a fair fight.

Thinking about it more a Bard could sub for a Mage that fight.

Though I do think locking the doors for that fight would make it much more interesting.
