I've been getting into games alot more than usual lately and I think I'm going to get a strategy game (like Command and Conquer, LOTR battle for middle earth) to play for when I get tired of DAO.

I'd like to have a LOTR style strategy game (soldiers, bows/arrows, etc.) but a newer game then LOTR battle for middle earth. Can anyone think of strategy games like this?

I'd also like to hear your favorite overall strategy games as well as pc games overall. Please and thank you!

You know I can't think of any new midevial-strategy games newer than LOTR. I know Starcraft II is coming out soon. I still stick to the classics, Age of Empries II, Warcraft III. My all time favorite strategy game is Warcraft II. I can't play it anymore because the graphics and technology barrier is really hard to get over, but for its time it was fantastic.

Total Annihilation was an old favourite of mine back in the day. Although I suppose it is a little long in the tooth now. The 'Strategy games' genre encompasses some very different games though, Dawn of War 2 is vastly different to something like Empire Total War. Do you like faster paced or slower paced strategy games?

Blitzkrieg and Risk 2.

I used to play Pharao as well, but have difficulty getting in to run even in XP.

Command and Conquer Generals and the expansion Zero Hour. Both fantastic.
Ah the memories... Hackers destroyed that game aswell as EA deciding to no longer support it after 2 patches iirc. My brother and I were a great team 2v2. Anyone else ever play ?

The best C&C style game I've played recently is Men of War. It is guns and tanks rather than bows and dragons but it's an awful lot of fun. The controls and options may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but you quickly get used to them.

There is a demo available. It's one of the small missions and it's not that exciting but I found it intriguing enough to get the full game and found it worth it.

Total Annihilation was a great game, I'm not sure I'd call it the greatest game though as there have been some excellent ones since then such as the original Medieval: Total War (it's a shame they destroyed the campaign after that though).

Other recent good strategy games I liked were:

Europa Universalis III (7 days until the new expansion pack comes out!) which is a quite different game to C&C. It's like the Total War series' campaign map but filled out to a full game and covering the entire world with any nation playable (although some are harder than others). This is a medieval game but combat is between armies so the bows are only in the descriptions. The expansion packs improve the game so I'd recommend getting the 'complete' bundle with at least the first two, and the third one (Heir to the Throne) as well if it's available when your looking to buy.

Supreme Commander - Like Total Annihilation but not quite as good in most respects (although the super-units are far better than the Krogoth), it was released in 2006 not 1997 though so it's a lot easier to get hold of a copy. The Forged Alliance expansion-sequal completely lost the plot for singleplayer but I hear it's good balancing for multiplayer.

Codename: Panzers Phase 1 & Phase 2. It's a 2004 release so it is becoming difficult to get hold of but it featured a lot of the things that make Men of War fun is a gentler and more polished form. There's no inventories but you can still repair derelict enemy tanks and use them and there are some great missions (I particularly remember the one where you have to defend against Matilda IIs with Flak 88s). The more recent cold war apparently isn't as good, although I haven't played it myself.

Heroes of Annihilated Empires. This is one of those games that are good, but not great, games that never seem to get the recognition they deserve. I don't know if it's newer than Battle for middle earth but it's in a fantasy setting like LOTR's. It's supposed to be part of a series but it was canned at the time due to not enough sales, but now the studio has gone on to make STALKER I'm hopeful it might be revived some time in the future.

STARCRAFT. it is over 10 years old and the online competition is still going strong. anybody - who has played it online enough to understand it - knows that it is by far the most balanced and competitive RTS ever made. there are 3 TOTALLY different races with units that are not even similar yet blizzard has managed to balance the 3 races perfectly. i think it is the greatest game of all time and many others share my opinion.

I was just going to suggest that one! Chances are if you're into strategy you're not too fussed about graphics anyway, so I wouldn't write it off completely, along with stuff like Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Might and Magic 6 (awesome), hell even Warrior Kings Battles was fun (I much prefer old games, I can never stand playing flashy new ones that flatter themselves and are usually just graphics ****s anyway)

The civilization series. All great games to play and with each turn it can get pretty intense, even if you are playing againest the maximum amount of nations. Civ 3 has been my favorite out of all of them.

Starcraft and Age of Mythology.

Age of Empires series is not bad, and Black & White can be fun.

In a word, these.
I don't remember which but there was a demo of one Age of Empires I would play over and over where you were the Carthaginians vs. Rome and the music was delicious and it was just so fun, I searched for the game but couldn't find any that looked like it..and Black and White was totally sweet, great with reasonable concepts and flexibility, even though I never really got anywhere..had too much fun throwing villagers and beating my creature..

myth 2 soulbighter. Best origonal storyline, music and gameplay. Has magic and gunpowder and is 11 years old, older than starcraft.

It requires tactical knowledge of terrain as terrain helps archers and your dwarves that throw molotov cocktails or mortars at the enemy undead hordes.

Experience plays a part also, warriors tend to block more agaist enemy attacks and fight more effective.

All the units are balanced, even the enormous tanky trow that kicks enemies in half (being a giant made out of clay) can still be taken down quite easily if you plan ahead.

You basicly have an army, that is all you get for that mission. You rareley recive reinforcements and healing is scarce 2 units in the game can only heal. You get a band of about 10-20 men agaist 200.

I could rant all day about how good this game is, but it beats any real time stratergy game hands down, even if it is 11 years old (with a graphics patch recently available) i would recomend this game to any total war fanatic, as this is basicly one of the great grand daddyies for RTS.

So it's a kind of Men of War with a good storyline?

There are a few RTSs around where you have a limited force which you must use to complete the mission, focusing on real tactics over economic management. I prefer them, though they can be hard to find.

Ground Control is such a game, though more forgiving than what I've played of Men of War.
