I think the genetics argument is a bit of a red herring - it's not as though bleach and dye will be uninvented in future.

The argument that it just doesn't look as good on some of their models sounds a lot more likely!

Recessive gene is recessive.

(Technically, redheads should disappear long before blondes.)

The genes don't dissappear.

2 brunettes can get a blonde if there are blonde genes in the "bank" when they mix up the genes.

I wager there would be just as many blondes in the future as there are now (not-withstanding dying fads, ofc.).

The recessive genes don't disappear but their manifistation becomes more uncommon if they are spread across a large population rather than kept in small population groups. That's why incest is discouraged. It's also why blue eyes are increasingly rare in America.

This is why I get irked every time I see a custom Shepard with dark hair and bright blue eyes.

It's painfully obvious she's not a natural blonde.

Kahlee Sanders was introduced in the first Mass Effect EU book "Revelation" (prequel to ME1).

Quote: "Average in both height and build, Kahlee's only really distinguishing feature was her shoulder-length blond hair -- a genetically recessive trait, natural blonds were nearly extinct. But her hair was a dirty blond, with streaks edging toward shades of brown... and there were still plenty of humans who dyed their hair blond anyway. She didn't normally stand out in a crowd."

Yep, and red heads far outnumber every other type in ME, for females, anyway. Not a gamestopping issue, but more diversity would have been greatly appreciated.

Indeed - assuming that some other factor doesn't come into play. A particularly deadly and contagious virus picked up on an alien world that humans with alleles linked to blonde hair colour were more susceptible to, or that people lacking those alleles had immunity to, would do it.

Stretching the bounds of believability, since it would probably have to be something working at DNA level as the alleles for hair colour (as far as I'm aware) don't affect anything else meaningful in the body.

Well, except for IQ level in people with blo...

Let alone the fact that you never had a blonde squadmate in the Mass Effect games, how come we never had a blonde love-interest? My male-shep would have been served well with a hot bombshell with a sexy 1950's hairstyle, you know, like the one with a blonde curl covering one eye?

Comander Shepard can have blond hair if you like. Comander Shepard can be a love interest if you like.

Blond Comander Shepard. No sexy 1950's hairstyle though.

Equally importantly, why do people go into battle with loose hair? Ashley does it, Miranda does it, default female Shepard does it.

Maybe because I think blondes are overrated, but I never really cared all that much about their absence for whatever reason. Don't seem to understand why people care so much.

There will be relatively fewer blondes in the future. If 3 % of humanities hair colour alleles are blonde and they are isolated to 3 % of humanity then there's a 3 % chance a randomly picked person is blonde. Spread those genes accross humanity as a whole and there's a 0.03^2 (roughly 1/1000) chance a person is blonde. In regards to spread we are somewhere inbetween those extremes and moving towards the latter. Blondes will be less common in the future.

I'm not sure what the hoopla over blonde hair is either. It might be because of the "stupid" stereotype, which isn't exactly flattering.

I agree, but even still, I would have liked to have seen more diversity. More blondes, more asians, less red heads.

This thread is so full of win. It has smart people talking about genes, butthurt people who quite possibly have blonde hair, and not so subtle blonde jokes.

What's the difference between a smart blonde and a UFO?

There have been sightings of UFOs.

But she's a typical blonde ^_^

Not wanting to work in a hospital, she wants to lounge around the Normandy's medical bay, drinking. Dr Michel is French so she's better at it.

Most of my caucasian femsheps are blonde with black eyebrows, because I try to make them look like me :D I don't really care if NPCs or squadmates are blonde or not as long as I can customize shep to be how I want.
