I have just about zero modding experience.  But, I'm no dummy, I'm a quick learner and usually am able to figure things out when I set my mind to them...

I've followed some tutorials, made some items and a new merchant for my camp (complete with inventory, convesation, VO, etc; still having lip-synch issues, but that's another post for another sub-forum), and feel like I'm starting to get a handle on this stuff.

So I followed st4rdog's video tutorial on creating a playable area (using an area only, not getting into custom levels just now).  I added my own script to set some details on the default character as well.

However, when I play the level, everything is pitch black.  I can see the minimap, and my character portrait, and my quickbar.  I can move around... I see the icon moving on the minimap.  My mouse pointer is grayed out.  Pressing tab doesn't highlight the NPC I placed there(I know he's there, because he's a nug and I can hear him squeaking in the darkness).  The character details script seems to have worked, as the details (race, abilities) I specified for the character are there. I tried it without the script and the same issue happened.

There is a small area I can stand in where suddenly I can see, and interact with the NPC, and the conversation works as planned.  I tried moving the starting point, and now I don't even have that much.  Can't see a thing.

I've been going over and over it, trying to find what I missed.  Re-followed the tutorials and every other similar one I could find, but I can't find a solution.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this one?   Would love some help.

You can check my video tutorials out which you can find them on my signature. What it looks like from your situation that the player start waypoint was not defined in the module. So it's taking you to location 0,0,0 which is out of bounds beyond where the the area is.

Follow this part of the tutorial where it says, "Setting a starting point" and you should be able to place your character at the right spot.

Thanks for the reply! There is definitely a starting point, and judging by the mini-map, it's exactly where I meant for it to be. I wonder if it's possible that the X-Y coordinates are where I meant them to be, and the Z coordinate is off, placing my character below or above the map itself? That might be possible, but in the area editor it sure looks like it's in the right place.

I'm gonna check out your tutorials... I've found that looking at many different tutorials for the same thing helps me see things in enough different ways to highlight things I've missed.

Did you add a "level" to your area? Click the ... on the right side in the Area object inspector (at top) where it says "Level" and select one of the predefined ones for quickest results.

SilentCid: thanks, your first tutorial showed me what I was doing wrong; I wasn't looking at the pathfinding maps, so I was placing my start point in an area that wasn't meant to be accessible. None of the other tuts I saw mentioned those. I think sometimes people who know what they are doing just skip things like that, assuming any idiot would know about them.

I think I have shown here today that I am not just *any* idiot. :)

I moved my start point to a permissible area, and bang-zoom, I can see. Huzzah!

But now, for some reason, my NPC isn't showing up. I deleted him in the area editor and re-placed him near my new starting point, and he's not there. I see him in the area editor, and I saved/checked-in/re-exported everything, generated new Module xml and Manifest XML, but he's nowhere to be seen. Very weird. I'm working on it, and will update if anybody's interested, but any insight, as always, would be appreciated.

However now that I can see things, for some reason my NPC is not showing up. I moved him to the proper place

Uh.. congrats?

Anyway, try putting down some placeables too. And go to the creatures tab and place a cat or something down. Export with dependant resources and try again.

Make sure you completely exit out of the game between tests. Just going out to the title screen is not good enough.

Thanks for the tip, Falloutboy. I tried that, and they didn't show up either, so I looked for what all the things that didn't show up had in common, versus what all the things that did show up had in common. Turns out I had the properties set incorrectly on the things that weren't showing up... I had the Module set to the name of my module as well as the Owner Module. I changed the module on them to Core Game Resources, and now everything is working.

Thanks for the help everyone!

SilentCid, I've been downloading all ofyour videos. They are fantastic!
