There's one thing that I honestly don't quite understand. Why is it Ben's fault that Kenny's family died? If anything, he actually bought them (and everyone else at the Motel) more time.
Not really. He was used by them and was giving them some of their supplies -- which could've been detrimental to the group's safety, if they needed something the Bandits had.
Had he gone to his group and told them the bandits possibly had his friend and were trying to manipulate him into giving them supplies, then people might not have died. His group could've confronted the bandits or at least gotten more prepared for it.
Hell, they could've prepared for getting the hell out of dodge, if need be, by placing their supplies in Kenny's RV -- which is what I think should've been done in the first place, regardless of whether or not Ben told them what was going on or not.
Ben's responsible for the deaths of Katjaa and Duck in an indirect sense, but he's the main reason why they died in the first place. By lying to the group, he showed that he doesn't trust them enough/he's going to be really hard to trust. By giving the bandits supplies, he was cutting into what the group needed to survive -- meds, food, etc.
And when there was an investigation going on, instead of coming clean about what he was doing and explaining why, it ended up costing the group a lot: the bandits were in no mood to negotiate again, fighting erupted, and walkers were attracted which caused Duck to get bitten and Katjaa to commit suicide later on.
Had Ben consulted the group or had he confessed to the group before things went to hell, the group could've prepared for it.
In Episode 2, we learn that the St. John's farm was providing food for the bandits so that they'll leave them alone. At the end of the episode, Jolene says "so long as they keep getting food from [the dairy]" then people like Clementine would be safe. Well, now that the St. Johns were out of the picture, the bandits would start going after other people for food. And you can bet those bandits would come knocking on Lee's group's door regardless of Ben's actions. If Ben didn't appease them with food and supplies for as long as he did, they would have attacked the Motel sooner. And at that point, Kenny would not have finished making repairs to the RV to allow for their escape.
They've been attacked before. They've held up just fine. The bandits are equipped with mostly bows and arrows and a few guns, but have no military experience. If we believe Brenda St. John, they're also druggies, so their handle on reality isn't going to be at its strongest. Indeed, the fact that they were being given drugs by Ben lends credence to what Brenda the Butcher suggested.
Lilly had military training and could use that to help the group. The group had sufficient cover from arrows and bullets. And the bandits would've been firing weapons from far into the woods, attracting Walkers towards them and not towards the group -- unless the bandits were in very close proximity to the group, like what happens in Act 3.
I'd say that the group would've held up fine if Ben hadn't been cutting into their supplies.
He's undeniably at fault for Doug's death/Carley's death though. Well, him and Lilly for Carley, as Lilly murdered Carley in cold blood -- but Lilly wouldn't have done that, had Ben confessed.
