AngryJoe's review made me change my opinion from "looks mediocre" to "less then mediocre".
*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE WALKING DEAD SHOW*
And though this thread is about the game(s), I'm not particularly happy with tonight's episode. It was one point that changed it from really ****ing awesome to "Why now? That just doesn't seem good". I liked the idea, I loved all of the ideas of the episode tonight, but I don't think it should've happened now in regards to a particular event. In the fourth season, since the Governor arc looks like it'll continue to there, said event would've been more in tune.
But then again, it might not have worked in the fourth season. Maybe the season finale would've been better. I dunno. It's just... well... did Merle have to die? It was powerfully done, as the entire sequence of his death had me cheering and tearing, but I'm one of the few people that actually saw Merle as a decent person instead of as an ***hole.
It's not the writing that makes me unhappy, but rather the "when it happened". The writing was great, but I think the characterization and Merle's death should've happened at different times. After the assault on the prison -- the true assault -- the Governor would retreat with eight or so men and Merle would give chase on his own and take them all down, but in the process die and turn as a Walker. And Daryl would come across him. This episode was close, but not near what I wanted.
Alternatively, if he was to die in this most recent episode no matter what, it would've been nice to see him do a few things first:
1) Interact with the baby just a little bit. Obviously without Little Merle near the baby.
2) Apologize to Glenn about what happened to Maggie, even if poorly done.
3) When Michonne leaves, ask her to deliver a message to the group. That he took Michonne because he knew they wouldn't be able to hand her over and wanted to spare them having to do it and become like him, since he's done it before. That he recognizes the group doesn't like him and doesn't want him there, but wants his brother Daryl to have the best life he possibly can. And that he's going to take on the Governor so that, hopefully, he can keep the war from happening.
The episode sort of did 2 and 3, but for 2 it just had Daryl telling Glenn such which doesn't carry with it as much as it would've if Merle had done so. And for 3, his reasons for doing all of that are really known to only 3 people: Michonne, Daryl, and Merle himself. And if the season finale doesn't give him the recognition as a hero he deserves, I'll be really pissed. Given the new tombstone shot showed, it's
extremely likely Daryl will bring back his brother's corpse and bury him.
I just hope the group will at least praise what he did. Glenn will probably be like "Good riddance", and if so I hope Daryl drops him.
But it could just be my love of Merle's character interfering with my judgment. It's hard to be objective on writing in regards to a certain character when you love that character so much.
