Personally I've had an idea about and imperium royal(not sure if thats the best term for archon system) assassin who's host to a desire demon. On a further note she wouldn't be a mage but rather a further Tevinater attempt to fix the problems that led to Fenris and bring back the spirit warriors and other demon and fade spirit aided combatants for their professional army .
Backstory doen'st matter, I just want somebody who'll approve of senselessly violent acts.

Also without discussing who/how this thread doesn't have much to discuss.

When they take damage, they must laugh, or otherwise enjoy it, as it benefits their abilities.

Granted, if they decide to add an extra companion, one like this would take about 3 seconds to write. Even that might put the writers to sleep, though.

Why would that person not just immediately (and repeatedly) not try to kill you?

There just aren't enough companions in games whose hobby consists of devouring people and spitting out their bones.hoorayforicecream wrote...
Khem Val in SWTOR is pretty much exactly what you're asking for.
ToR has a few character who're like that, really. Kaliyo mostly fits the bill too I'd say, and I actually liked having her along with my relentlessly-merciful-goodie-toe-shoes-at-least-to-begin-with Imperial Agent, even if she did disapprove of basically everything I ever did.

I want Minsc. My characters always felt so safe and secure, leaning on Minsc and Lilarcor, regardless of surroundings. Minsc took well care of them. I suppose I tried to see a Minsc in Sten. But while I also liked Sten, it wasn't the same. Sten did his part, but wasn't so good fighter and also didn't really seem to care much, about anything.
Someone like Minsc, who only meets greater threats with greater aggression. No fear, no doubt. Growing to challenge. The harder they come...

And should be done again.. Black Whirlwind was an amazing character. I felt like Bioware was trying to recapture Whirlwind's magic with Oghren, but the dwarf was utterly horrendous.So... The Black Whirlwind? It's already been done.
Jade Empire companions are all excellent, i doubt Bioware could ever "recapture" their magic. But they should look at Black Whirlwind, Kang the Mad and Chai Ka/Wild Flower again and try to make companions in future titles at least half as interesting.

I like the idea because we have good characters and grey characters but not black characters.
Oh, what about Kolgrim, that dude with the beard with the Faith's Edge axe?

Do not want to end up on a pile of wood with a burning torch heading my way here but.....
If a character like that would be available in DA3 I think s/he would not be in my party a lot.
Would not have a problem with a companion who would speak out his/her mind though if my choises would be 'to soft' in his/her opinion. (This concerning disapproval or approval points.)

Oghren is the most nuanced and deep character of Origins. Most people see him and dismiss him as an stereotypical alcoholic dorf. Once you dig a little behind the reason for the alcoholism, you begin to discover Oghren's drunken rambling, crass humor, and "anything that moves" harrasment comes to hide a deep-seated depression. His sense of self-worth removed by first losing his family, and then losing his identity as a warrior. He's not a funny drunk; he's a deppressed, self-loathing wreck of a man, hitting the sauce so that the pain goes away. And unlike the rest of the companions' personal quests, you're not actually helping Oghren face his inner demons - you're just supporting his self-denial. But the worst part comes from the gifts: The game actively causes you, the player, not only to indulge, but to support his self-destructive behavior.Sylvanpyxie wrote...

Oghren is an amazing character.
Not to dismiss Jade Empire companions, they were great by their own merits. But people so easily dismissing the most complex character of Origins always rubs me the wrong way.

Now this I can get behind. It's very... orcish (well, Warcraft orcs and Nicholls orcs), or klingonish if you prefer that. I tend to view the Qunari as somewhat like this, but they don't take the extra step in enjoying battle for battle's sake, because everything they do requires a purpose. I imagine such a character would get frustrated with a diplomatic PC, preferring instead to knock heads together rather than settle disputes by talking.Arthur Cousland wrote...
... then perhaps, they are a warrior to the core and enjoy the challenge of facing worthy opponents in combat, where they feel truly alive when blood and limbs are flying.
But, to the OP's initial point, I think it would only be worthwhile to have a violent, vicious, psychopathic killer follower if we are given the option to behave in a similar way, or at least express positive views about such behavior. Otherwise the person will just seem out of place and we will be left wondering why our PC is even associating with such a person in the first place.
