I will probably be giving multiplayer a try on the XBox shortly. I would assume there is no pausing in multiplay with the skill wheel. This I feel may pose a problem for me as I am a 'serial pauser' in single play and have never used mapped powers to buttons.
What is my best bet for at least being slightly ready when I finally give it a try, Should I just practice trying to play unpaused in my next single player run through?
(I also see a lot of tactics threads in this forum talking about 'bubbles', engineers exploding stuff and such which are confusing. I assume as I play a few multi player games I'll learn more of these tactics? I can see myself being a drag down on a team in the early going,)
Tips for a rookie XBox player?

good practice would be to play the N7 missions on insanity, without pausing. Be sure to use a weak shepard. It is trickier than SP due to the tight areas and the amount of enemies.

...How could you have gone so long in singleplayer without using mapped buttons? That skill wheel breaks immersion for me, ha.
Um, no. Practicing unpaused is different. In fact, just go straight for bronze on multiplayer. You'll get the hang of things pretty quick. I feel multiplayer is much more challenging, since you dont get as many powers as shepard and you dont get to 'command' your squadmates.
In fact, in multi, you're all 'squadmamtes', combining your otherwise nonstellar abilities to form a workable task force.
But anyway, multiplayer is for sure a different feel- nothing in singleplayer can really 'ready' you for it. Just jump in and have fun, be respectful.
DONT SPAM COBRA MISSLES.

There is a thread for mentors that would likely be willing to help out. Read up on those tactics and start with some bronze matches. I would be glad to run a couple with you and try to give some tips. Gamertag is the same as my forum name.

Thanks, yes i was going to go for bronze. So I gather from a post above that you do not get a huge plethora of skills in mp to start?
I guess I'm just used to opening the power wheel and having a boat load of skills staring me in the face.

You only get 3 skill trees and 2 passive ones.

A multiplayer match will last about 20 minutes with 11 waves. There is no pausing unless you get killed and don’t get resurrected, but you do get to go into a viewer mode and watch the other squad members finish the wave.
There is no power or weapon wheel in multiplayer either. The powers are already assigned to right button, left button and “Y” so you may end up finding your favorite powers in a bad spot to use. For weapons you are limited to carrying two at maximum but of any combination.
For a class to choose, use the one you use in single player to start with. You can always try another one later, who knows you may like one of the others in multiplayer even if you don’t like it in single player.
The best thing to do is to stick close to the other players and follow them and get to know the maps a little. If you go explore on your own you will likely get killed. Some waves have specific objectives like deactivating devices or activating a terminal to hack it. So be aware of the occasional “press A to activate” now and then.
Tips in general:
-Go into a Bronze match with random enemies and random maps as it’s the easiest.
-Remember where the ammo stashes are and reload after each wave ends.
-During a hack objective stay in the blue circle to get the hack done faster.
-Wave 11 is an extraction wave. Get to the extraction site and stay in the blue circle for best score and credits.
-Keep aware of the what enemies you fight (Cerberus, Geth, Reaper Husks) before the match so you know what to expect for the bosses you will fight. If you have played the single player game you will know what to expect.
-Kill Cerberus Engineers fast before they set up turrets.
-Equip a rapid firing weapon and a heavy damage weapon. Like an assault rifle with a heavy pistol.
-You can only level up to level 20 so be aware of what powers you want to level up since you wont be able to max them all out.
-Have fun!
