I love dogs (normal sized dogs at least; I'm not a big fan of yipping little ankle-biters) and I love Dog.  He's a big, barrel-chested bark machine that loves giving you presents and rolling around on the ground.  Oh, and he likes to dig holes too.  Most enjoyable portrayl of a dog in a video yet.

But, I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed by Grin (I always call him that) in combat.  I went STR and CON my first playthrough, and made the incredible mistake of wasting talents on the Warrior line.  I didn't know at the time that the number of talent point that Dog gets is so much smaller than every other character.  That didn't work out so well.

I've built him with Str and Dex, trying for a rogue-like build, but his survivability was poor.  I've seen people post about Dog being an offtank, and though I'd see what others were doing so differently than I am.

Anyone?

I just pump his str and call it a day. Once he gets overpower, he's a terrific off-tank and survivability isn't an issue.

I've been going 2 str/1 dex with him. Seems to work okay.

I feel the problem with dog is really itemization the top end collars kaddis are a bit underwhelming if you take a look at the other two slot character Shale. What dog really needs is a little more magic bang on his collars and kaddis. Not sure why his gear is limited to two effects/stats. I find him to be a lyrium potion hole when I bring him soaking up healing in the off-tank role.

I would like to see him have naturally high dexterity from level 1. That would help defense and attack. Also since dog is not part of the approval game there is no free attributes to gain later.

I've been giving Dog 1/1/1 str/dex/con when he levels. I sometimes take other companions for plot reasons, but I always miss Dog. He's the cavalry, the party member with the highest mobility, and there are so many mages and archers for him to chew on.

What personally irks me is that once you get over level (is it 22?) with him there are no more abilities. I have the "level up" mark by his portrait but nothing to level him anymore.

Too lazy to actually go check it out, is there any tactics for Dog (or anyone else, for that matter) that makes him attack any enemies that attack the PC?

Enemy -> Attacking main character -> whatever you want the dog to do.

He's much more useful though if you have him overwhelm and shred ranged attackers.

Build-wise I pumped his strength, dexterity and constitution. A lot.

Dogmeat is the premier mage killer in the game. Set the tactics to charge and overwhelm or shred mages and they cease to be an annoyance. If no mage is attacking, then set him to attack archers. I have yet to have a mage come out on top in these encounters

Best tank ever and only companion that can overwhelm without changing shapes. What more do you want?

Wait... what?

How did you do that?.

According to the Dragon Age wiki "Dog has access to a series of talents
unique to him. On the console editions of the game, he can also access Warrior Talents."

EDIT: Nevermind I guess he uses the PC version so maybe he has a mod for it.

No.  He was talking about his Dog, not Oghren.

I use the Extra Dog Slot, so my perception of what he can do is a little biassed. However, I found that he performed very well built with all strength, with his tactics set to use health poultices at less than 50% health. He's not a great full tank, but he usually doesn't draw much agro either. Treat him as a pet and (as others have said) point him at Mages & Archers. He can usually hold them until your own DPS characters have a chance to deal with front line threats, and will sometimes take them out entirely on his own.

I build dog to the point where i balance the 3 stats i feel are more important, Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution. Once i have them balanced as in say 20,20,20 in those stats i just put one in each every level and dog kicks ass as an off tank. If you have problems with dog as an off tank it is more likely that your Tank has not "hoovered" up all the melee aggro as they should. I have found that once i get overpower talent dog becomes more of my mage killer, or if nothing else he will give the mage i sic him on something other than my healer or tank to think about. A dude in a bath robe weaving a spell is a nice little chew toy for dog as there is no hard crunchy shell that must be removed before you get to the good stuff inside, it is all right to the soft chewey center, mmmmmm mmmmmmm.

I usually invest his points into Dex & Str to get a powerful damager. And when you summon a poisonous spider or other upgraded ranger pet, with dog you get 2 party members with overwhelm.

I have done something similar to that, i had a party that consisted of Wynne with animate dead, Zeveran and Leliana specced as a rangers with max pets, and then i was a mage with animate dead, which was quite interesting. That becomes an 8 member party quite the crowd to dungeon crawl with. Just have one or both rangers make the bears and there is 2 pretty good tanks, or one bear and one spider, and because you loose them when you change zones this works better as you just have one summon the opposite of what is timed out.
