 Hello,

I've never had so much trouble picking weapons and playing through Insanity in any ME game before 3. I am not very good with insanity, and wanna max out the best shotgun to use alongside my Predator HP. I'm very selective with my charges, and the cover system is my best friend when it comes to combat on Insanity. I've been using an Eviscerator primarily, but I feel like the Graal, Wraith, or Claymore would be great too. If everyone could give me suggestions and pros and cons of their picks, that'd be great. Thanks in advance!

If you like to use cover and not charge liberally then I'd say the Geth Plasma Shotgun or Graal Spike Thrower is best for you. If you charge quite a bit the Claymore or Wraith would be best. Raider is great too if you have that DLC.

You'll probably get about as many different opinions as there are shotguns. If you have it the Raider might be an option too.

I don't have any DLC shotguns unfortunately. I was using a Vindicator, Evsicerator (until I got Wraith), and Predator with 108% recharge, but I feel like I've been wasting the Vanguard's potential, so I'm getting rid of the AR so I can just use the pistol, and a great shotgun that I could rely on. Is the Scimitar any good? I like its rate of fire and capacity, but I dunno about the damage, and the reload time is repulsive.

I imagine the Scimitar is pretty effective with Incendiary Ammo with its high ROF and pellets I imagine it procs that fire burst quite a bite. Although I don't think it is competitive with the Graal or GPS.

My other concerns are ammo capacity, accuracy, and damage since I plan on using Charge more frequently when I drop the assault rifle. Is the Graal still better in this regard?

I think the GPS is better than the Graal but you get the GPS so late in the game. However the Graal has top notch accuracy and damage. It has assault rifle range with Widow/Claymore like damage when you charge it, however a concern may be it only carries three shots per clip.

Alright, the Graal is really appealing to me. Which mods do you recommend with it?

I actually found the Damage and Choke mods to work really well, as counter-intuitive as that sounds for a shotgun that does plenty of damage and demonstrates good accuracy to begin with.

I think its because I have a bad habit of only charging in at the start of combat, and sticking at range when any new enemies arrive. With those mods I can basically stick around as far away as I care to stand and still nail virtually anything, but it's still a great option at short range (particularly with charge-up)

In terms of raw optimisation I'd guess the spare clip would be useful as virtually the only weakness it has is spare ammo. It's brilliant in virtually every other department, even by other weapons standards (like punching through thick armour).

I think the Choke mod in general is godly on shotguns unless you always get up close. Gives you the ability to headshot enemies at quite a bit of range. The fact that it already has good accuracy just means you'll get even more range. So I don't think it's silly to use it at all.

Alright, next time I pull up the game, I'm gonna try that. They really outdid themselves in the weapon/combat/customization department with this game. If I could have the mechanics of ME3 in ME2, I'd sell my soul to Bioware. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Wraith. It does a lot of damage, and its relatively light.

I'm all about the Wraith.  Its small magazine size suits my playstyle well, as I compulsively reload even when I wouldn't need to when wielding a weapon with a larger magazine size.

you can hold the charge of a spike thrower or GPS while doing a biotic charge. Eithr of them are the better choice if you plan on charging (and you should) :P

Dont overlook the Katana. Yes it is the default Shotgun but it has very good balance in terms of damage, rof, clip size, weight and it is dark blue; close to black which makes it a rather handsome looking shotgun and that cant be said for the more powerful shotguns =P

If you pick a shotgun that is pretty accurate such as the Graal, I recommend Barrel + Shredder. If you pick something that is inaccurate like the Katana or Claymore, I recommend Choke + Shredder.

Just... dont pick the N7 Crusader... >.<... It is the most useless shottie because it is like a gimp Sabre or Sniper without scope

Not really. Having to charge ur gun slows u down, which for a Vanguard is the last thing u want to do.

Do not use the Shredder with the the Graal or GPS, they inherently negate armor reduction for some reason, so its just a waste. And even for the Claymore the barrel is actually a better choice due to how high its shot damage is. Plus most Ammo powers come with armor reduction, while increasing damage at the same time. So its better just to use one of them to be honest. That being said the low damage shotguns could use both, because they can be absolutely pitiful against armor.

I haven't tried to hold a charge on GPS or Graal in SP, but I certainly could not do it in MP on my Krogan with the Graal as it will always fire right when I hit charge. However, the shot will hit the target if I was aiming correctly.

As for ammo, Graal's ammo capacity is good if you charge the bulk of your shots, and not terribly good if you don't. With a Vanguard you have more than enough power damage to supplement your weapons though.

I'm a fan of the Crusader, I find it hard to aim at close range though.

All the shotguns have their strengths and weaknesses. I prefer the Wraith with choke and barrel mods. I can take the occasional midrange shot, plus get maximum effectiveness up close. At the level 5 upgrade, Wraith weighs the same as the Scimitar V. I used Eviscerator until I had funds for the Wraith and Carnifex until I could get the Paladin. That's a great load-out for my play style. I tend to do more damage with biotics than guns so I appreciate the low weight with lots of damage.

Scimitar is an interesting option. Even though the shots do less damage, you get a pretty good ROF.

Disciple is the lightest shotgun and staggers pretty well. It has more shots to the clip but is slower to reload and does moderate damage for a shotgun. I would consider this if I needed more than 165% cooldown bonus or wanted to carry an AR instead of a pistol.

The possibilities are endless! The mind boggles! :) Srsly, use whatever shotgun meshes with your play style.

I use the Claymore because I love everything about it. The damage, the sound, the looks. Epic.

I actually enjoy the crusader with spare ammo and barrel since it lets you carry only a single weapon that is good for any range and headshot guardians with ease.

I tested Graal with Shredder, and it does take down Atlas much faster than without but I never charged it up. The Choke is rather useless to me because I find its unmoded accuracy adequate.

As for the GPS, I rarely uses it except fun runs with infiltrator so I am not sure.

As for the Claymore, It can already take down unarmored unit with a single hit without the Barrel and with Shredder. I uses the Shredder because it is armored units that require more "attention" :P

Before deciding Shredder or Barrel, I performed the following test: NG++ fully upgraded. Cronos Station against the Atlas

Normal enemies like Centurians, etc. will all die in a shot unless I miss very badly. A solid shot to the chest is usually sufficient to achieve OSOK. Using Incendiary Ammo spec to explode. Squad using Cryo spec to weaken armor. Warp not used.
Squad is shooting, sometimes they are dead, sometimes I dunno what they are doing =P but after a couple of runs:

Claymore Shredder + Choke. Average 3 shots kills Atlas after its shield went down.

Claymore Barrel + Choke. Average 4 shots to kills Atlas after its shield went down.

Maybe I will test the Graal later... when I find it... I think I left my other shotguns in the basement some where on the Normandy

Eviscerator is a good one to use from cover
Wraith with high damage and lightweight make it excellent for Vanguard
Claymore is DEVASTATING but if you don't know how to use it well do not use it
Scimitar was actually my shotgun of choice in the first playthrough, it has really high DPS due to the high RoF
GPS and Grall are great, but like the claymore take some skill
It all depends on how you built your character, what equipment you use, and your playstyle

I'd suggest either the GPS or the Scimitar. The GPS hits hard and has great range but the low capacity and weight are quite irritating. The Scimitar is practical, does more than decent damage with a high rate of fire and nice capacity.

Personally, I've found that the claymore is a bit of a "meh" choice for a vanguard due to the low capacity and disgusting weight. Even if you're not bothered by the loss of power recharge speed, the reload timer and the fact you only get a single shot per round makes you a glass cannon at best.
