And if anyone's going to bring up the Levo/Dextro amino acids differences, see here http://creationsafar...om/epoi_c03.htm scroll down to section 68.
Left- and Right-Handed Amino Acids Can Be Linked
Are the two forms of the amino acids shaped so that any of them can unite, whether they are L- or D- in type? The answer is yes. Whether left- or right-handed, any amino acid can be linked with any other of either hand. There seem to be no exceptions.
*more snipping 'cause you get the point*
I just wanted to clarify that the issue here is not if levo/dextro amino acids can be linked together to make a protein. They can be. But amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and if your species evolves using predominately one type, then they'll be designed to interact with other proteins of that type (and to interact with other
chiral molecules a certain way). So basically, a levo-based protein wouldn't be able to interact with a dextro-based protein like it should. The best example I can think of is trying to put a right foot shoe on your left foot. It doesn't fit properly.
This is an oversimplification of course. For instance, D and L can mean something different to chemists vs. biochemists... the former bases D and L on optical activity of each molecule. The latter bases D and L on the optical activity of reference molecule glyceraldehyde. But the bottom line is that the problem was never whether or not dextro/levo amino acids can be joined together. Right now, you and me have some dextro amino acids in us! They're not as common as the levorotary ones, but they're there!
For the record, I'm not against turian babies, hybrid babies, etc. Just did this for science! ME is full of lots of ridiculous science though so if you all want to tell me that hybrid babies or human gestation of turian embryos can happen due to space magic or something... I will not fight you. The reasoning behind mass effect relays isn't exactly watertight itself.
I think the bigger question is why would you want this for your child? Your kid would be all alone, face enormous discrimination, not to mention the ethical and political reasons why this would probably never be allowed in the ME universe. I guess this is why I didn't pick Synthesis. I don't want to play God.
I vote for all the adopted babies too. Think of how many war orphans there would be.
Edit: to add link to chirality
