Codex says this? Would like to know, bit unsure about Turians. Always been :)

From the Wiki about Turian biology:

The most distinguishing feature of turians is their metallic carapace, which is a result of their evolution. Turian features are avian, making them resemble humanoid birds or raptors, however unlike most Earth avian creatures, turians are viviparous and give birth to live young. In 2165, David Anderson claimed that turians reminded him of the evolutionary link between birds and dinosaurs. Turians are also recognisable by their voices, which have a distinctive flanging effect. Males and females do not differ greatly in physical appearance, but female turians lack the crest of horns found in the males of the race. The lifespan of a turian is comparable to that of a human

Although life on Palaven is carbon-based and oxygen-breathing, it is built on dextro-amino acids. This places the turians in a distinct minority on the galactic stage; the quarians are the only other sapient dextro-protein race. The food of humans, asari, or salarians (who evolved in levo-amino acid-based biospheres), will at best pass through turian systems without providing any nutrition. At worst, it will trigger an allergic reaction that can be fatal if not immediately treated. The turian mechanic Lilihierax on Noveria uses the idiom, "if you can polish enough gizzard". This suggests that the turians have a digestive system similar to birds and reptiles on Earth, some of whom swallow stones to help break down harder foods in the stomach.

Good work, you just pointed out another flaw in Mass Effect's writing. It would have been much more interesting and compelling if Cerberus was more like a cross between the CIA and the Navy SEALs (in spaaaaace....) rather than the KKK with better funding (again, in spaaaaace....). What I'm saying is, why can't humanity have their own answer to the salarian STG and the Council Spectres?

I'm all for a super-duper awesome section of the Alliance (actually, i thought N7 was that section), but an organisation that wants nothing more than to put the boot down on other races just because they're not human? Especially one that goes unchecked?

No thanks, no thanks at all.

Nah, N7 is merely a training program/ proficiency rating for Alliance military personnel. Not an organization. I just want something that can be humanity's answer to analogous organizations in other species' governments. Cerberus could have been that organization, if not for TIM's insanity, lack of basic safety precautions when dealing with mysterious alien tech, and racism. Perhaps it would have been better if Cerberus had oversight from the Alliance, unofficially of course. Gotta at least keep up the impression that the government has their hands clean.

Let me be clear, I am not advocating extermination and/or domination of other species just because they happen to be another species. I just would find it preferable if humanity recovered faster from the war than the rest of the potential competition out there.

I just wanted to clarify that the issue here is not if levo/dextro amino acids can be linked together to make a protein. They can be. But amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and if your species evolves using predominately one type, then they'll be designed to interact with other proteins of that type (and to interact with other chiral molecules a certain way). So basically, a levo-based protein wouldn't be able to interact with a dextro-based protein like it should. The best example I can think of is trying to put a right foot shoe on your left foot. It doesn't fit properly.

This is an oversimplification of course. For instance, D and L can mean something different to chemists vs. biochemists... the former bases D and L on optical activity of each molecule. The latter bases D and L on the optical activity of reference molecule glyceraldehyde. But the bottom line is that the problem was never whether or not dextro/levo amino acids can be joined together. Right now, you and me have some dextro amino acids in us! They're not as common as the levorotary ones, but they're there!

For the record, I'm not against turian babies, hybrid babies, etc. Just did this for science! ME is full of lots of ridiculous science though so if you all want to tell me that hybrid babies or human gestation of turian embryos can happen due to space magic or something... I will not fight you. The reasoning behind mass effect relays isn't exactly watertight itself.

I think the bigger question is why would you want this for your child? Your kid would be all alone, face enormous discrimination, not to mention the ethical and political reasons why this would probably never be allowed in the ME universe. I guess this is why I didn't pick Synthesis. I don't want to play God.
I vote for all the adopted babies too. Think of how many war orphans there would be. :?

Edit: to add link to chirality

First off: I loooove your username!

Thanks for the scientific refresher course! Now I remember why when Mordin told me about allergies and not...*ahem* "ingesting" I was like, wait a minute, that doesn't seem right. But I wasn't a bio/biochem major per se (more neurobio and psych), so I couldn't remember why I disagreed with that.
*snip*

Yay! You're the first to comment on my username! Sometimes I worry that people just think I'm promoting skankiness...

More on topic - I think one issue with some people being freaked out by the turian/ hybrid babies is that they don't look traditionally "cute." As in, no big eyes, chubbiness, etc. Case in point: everyone seems to love baby krogan. And why not? They look like fat little turtles! I challenge an artist to create a chubby turian baby.

Competition over what though? The focus after the war would be totally focused on co-operated rebuilding rather than competing with everyone else, though the sad part is i wouldn't put that past Humanity to do something as selfish as that (For example post-war ONI in the Halo book Glasslands....basteds....).

What i'm trying to say is why would you compete after you just unified to defeat the greatest threat the galaxy has ever known? What would you gain? Maybe its just the vehement optimist in me, but i'd like to think that even some of the most hardened pro-humanity people would be even slightly softened...

Yeah. All post-war efforts will be focused primarily on repopulating the earth and after that we move on to the galaxy!
Lots of copulation for everyone!

I always thought of Grunt as Shepard's adopted teenage kid. He's all grown up now... *sniffles*

@Mass effect 2 forever: well, you could say that Shepard does live in the +4000EMS destroy ending... my headcanon for that is that Garrus and the team managed to be rescued within a reasonable amount of time while Shep is recuperating in the hospital, and then they ADOPT ALL THE BABIES!

Rachni mission was heart-breaking when I thought I was sending Grunt to his death. Image IPB He's my 4th favourite character, wich is a big achievement considering how many extraordinary characters there are. Love him so much. Image IPB Image IPBImage IPB

Always thought of him as Shepard's little brother rather than son though.

@fle6isnow: I like the (ADOPT ALL THE BABIES!!!) -addition. Does this include the little blue ones or do they get enough attention in their thread?
