To be honest I'm not sure if this belongs here but I couldn't find anywhere else to stick it. Apologies if it's in the wrong place.
I'm wondering about Chanters. Personally as a lore component I think they're a great idea but I'm wondering a few things about their vows.
Their actual function seems to be that of a dedicated monk - people on a personal 'inner pilgrimage', one might say, dedicating themselves to their religious purpose in a manner similar to ascetic monks of bygone areas - only instead of physical isolation they use social constrictions to focus their personal energy purely on their religious path. I can see that, that's no problem.
But what about, say, writing? Can they write down things in 'normal speech' or would they need to use the Chant then as well? Given that I'm not sure of the regular rates of literacy in Thedas I'm not sure if this would really be an issue. Perhaps the Chantry has its staff learn to write and read. Perhaps they have passing (at best) literacy skills. Maybe it depends on their background but my question really is, if they can write, are they permitted to write normally or would that be considered a violation of their Chant-only vows?
How about their names? How could they possibly introduce themselves? In small isolated communities that people rarely travel from this isn't likely to be an issue either, but what if a Chanter moves from, say, Lothering to Denerim (or vice versa)? Would they travel with someone who knew them, or a letter from their old Chantry introducing them? Do they have leeway to introduce themselves upon a first meeting if no other options are available? What if their village is destroyed and they have to flee to another area? Maybe there's nothing in place for such a situation and a fleeing Chanter must go without a name or break his vows upon reaching another place.
Are there, say, special occasions (whether festivals or dire circumstances) when they're permitted normal speech? If someone's trying to kill the Reverend Mother do they have to Chant an alarm, or do they have circumstantial permission to break their vow of Chant?
I'm sure I'll think of others. The premise fascinates me, I'm just wondering about specifics. Not sure if anyone can really know the answers, though...
