It is a strange thing...I dont think I have ever had a win on Giant gold and the reason is the team always seems to try to hold the open ground.
So I end up sticking with them and then we all die horribly.
The one time I thought we would win wave 10 was a hack and the zone was in the open area...and we all died horribly.
This almost always happens to me. I run to a more defensible area but nobody follows me so either I get overwhelmed by enemies or my teammates say I'm rambo'ing to get more points <_< So I end up sticking with the group.
Also, why do people insist on running to the LZ immediately during the extraction wave?! I suppose if you're playing on bronze it's fine but silver/gold...ugh.

The problem with the hack objectives is that it forces the squad in these poorly defendable area with exposure to fire from all sides. A good team should be able to defend and survive in any of them. So going to silver and camping the lower hack or middle hack may be hard but you learn how to win there.
It won't always be targets, devices or easily defended hacks. You must be prepared for all situations.

Instant gratification.
"Camping" an area is too "boring" for some people (I'm not one of them). Most of the FPS have the Run 'n Gun mentality players as well.
Personally I much prefer to defend an area, and move as a team when necessary, but again the notion of "teamwork" and "strategy" goes completely out the window with some people... especially since a few other multiplayer games (wont name names) just encourage running around and killing everything and dying/respawning a lot.
Anytime you find a player who seems to know what they're doing, send them a friend request because its darn hard to find people who at least TRY to play intelligently.
Run and gun is basically the strategy against cerberus and reapers anyway. Phantoms, Brutes and Banshees can close in on you too quickly to hold an area for long. Plus both cerberus and reapers love to chuck grenades at you when you're hiding behind cover.
