The game is about Shepard, plus it would be too easy if your squadmates did all or even half the work. They're basically there to be bullet sponges and to give you the ability to use powers you wouldn't normally have.

Seriously, name one game in which the squadmates are actually good without being invincible or making gameplay boring.

Gears of war 3. They nailed the squadmate assistance in combat perfectly.

i HATE being forced to use the Dpad for my squad mates abiltiies, rathe then my own.

im a damn adept, i use abilities. 3 hotkeys isnt helping, its limiting.

its frustrating being in the know. youd think devs would already be there too.

Liara owns in ME3 if you give her orders. Bring along a character with overload (if Shep doesn't have it), then have Liara spam singularity and warp for an easy win. I don't have Kaidan alive in my game, so I'm not sure he works. But if he's got singularity and warp I'd assume the same would be true for him.

ME3 is not that bad .... ME2 on the other hand, higher difficulties were such a pain because squad mates are idiots that would jump out of cover to try and take on a scion head on. At least now you can just run over and res them.

wow. seriously dude. You didn't even read what I said. In this post.

I'll give you an example of a situation.

1. Say I equip one of my squadmates (Vega) with a shotgun. I assume Vega can handle a shotgun. It's made for short-range against enemies. So, I assume Bioware would have Vega be fighting enemies in CQC. He doesn't. In fact he's behind a cargo not fighting.

2. Lots of Squadmates will be in buildings where I'm fighting enemies all by myself. I just find it more entertaing when you bring squadmates with you in combat.

It's the same experience in multiplayer - don't you feel annoyed when you're the only one fighting and the rest of your team not contributing at all??

I don't think you are using the squadmates right. You can position them whereever you want. If you want Vega to charge into a pack of enemies using his shotgun you can actually do so by placing the arrow there. It will just lead to his inevitable death though.

Positioning and utilising the powers of your squadmates well is key to succeeding in ME2 and ME3 insanity modes on low levels. More often than not if you haven't tactically positioned your squadmates well you will be overrun with enemies.

that is one thing I'm thank full for. Bioware did very well in having that. Instead of wasting like 5 medi gels on just one enemy.

Ash and Garrus with a maxed Black Widow plus 50% Weapon damage and they don't suck at all. They could kill everything by themselves.

Putting the most powerful weapon that comes with auto AP rounds on teammates that get a massive increase to weapon damage, yeah, I'd hope they don't suck.

Anyways, I almost always put guns that had very signature sounds to them so I could tell when my team was firing (hurricane, revenant, widow). Fortunately, these guns didn't suck. But early on, especially on my Insanity run, teammates really don't serve a purpose other than to have an additional like 4 abilities to insta-cast. On insanity it's a lot more understandable but on easier difficulties it was ridiculous how much babysitting I needed to do for the AI. Even on ME2 I didn't have to start ordering my teammates into specific spots until Insanity, but on ME3 they're constantly out in the open (not using any powers and hardly ever shooting) taking rounds to the face like no tomorrow.

You're right about Fallout 3 but NVs follower AI is at least on par with ME3.

Just the slightest mention of FNV makes me want to run to the bar and begin drinking heavily.

They also had a tendency to shoot at their cover instead of being in cover mode and firing at their enemies.

What would you rather? COD?

I've finished full levels just relying on my squadmates while I coward in cover.

and you must be playing on Story mode. Since that's the easiest difficulty level.

I'm playing on Normal - Veteran. Where you would like your squad to follow through on Commands you simply give them.

Nope!

I was playing on the difficulty under Hardcore. Then after the mars mission I bumped it up to Hardcore and finished the game on that difficulty.

Hardcore for this game felt like normal for most other games including ME1 & ME2.

yeah. I thought ME3 was supposed to be harder. BW even said that the "normal will be the new veteran mode"

can't remember where exactly read that.......but man, the only difficulty I really had was towards the end of game on Earth

Squadmates have an issue with full-auto weapons too. They keep their heads up too long and get killed often.

I have to admit that the squadmates are still as dumb as bricks in combat.

Really? The squaddies in ME3 are way smarter than they were in ME2. They couldn't even run back then, so they were only really good for powers.

In ME3 there's more cheese weapons to give your squaddies, like the Particle Rifle and Hurricane. The squaddies can actually gun down a lot on their own in ME3 if you spec them right. On Priority: Earth, I had Kaidan and James basically hold off an entire flank on their own during the defend the missiles sequence.

That is my biggest complaint about the gameplay and general feeling. Supposedly I assembled the best fighters of an entire galaxy around meand they are just useless and in an even remotly hard fight it always comes down to Shepard vs the rest of the world. Especially in the last mission it gets a bit ridiculous. It feels like Shepard is the only one really fighting. You just hear that some squads were taken out and the remaining reaper forces are coming to you. You obviously smash them easily.
That is also the reason why I always end up with the same squadmates regardless of the enemy type.
I would be perfectly fine if the enemys were harder but your squadmates would at least help a little bit. I just used them as overload-spamming machines and that only on insanity but even that did not really felt necessary.

MAN! YOU SAID IT WELL!

COULDN'T AGREE WITH YOU MORE!

even if they had to amp up the Insanity mode just for higher Squad AI, It still be worth it. Again, it's about the enjoyment

Yeah, I find the squad mates useful. I usually take squad members for their abilities to deal with defenses. Kaidan for reave/overload, Garrus for overload, Tali for energy drain, etc. Not sure if you're just not utilizing them correctly or what. Of course they aren't going to just kill everything if you sit back and watch. That would be awful.

ME3 squadmates useless???? WTF? Thy're overpowered if anything. They hardly ever die, they have great abilities and bonuses (some of which significantly exceed the players) and deal great damage.

We're talking about how dumb they are (still). In one instance they were either shooting at walls or there was an enemy right in front of them and them not shooting at all until I had them use their abilities.

which begs the question: Why didn't they do this in ME series too?

It was a minor stroke of genius to allow this control over your companions behaviour, so it seems odd they didn't take the programming 'blocks' and utilised them as proper object oriented programmers.

I can imagine two reasons.

One, they had the feeling casual players might not like it - and they're obviously on the prowl for the casuals.

Two, because of limitations. There's a lot lost because of limitations to meet the lowest common technical denominator.
