What the hell was he doing all game? there's a god damn war on and all he can think to do is sit by some crates and offer a meagre amount of war assets.

He is a mercenary, not a boy scout. What did you expect?
In fact he only follows Shepard in ME2 because he was paid by Cerberus. If credits weren't involved he wouldn't have gave a damn about the Collectors.

I have to agree that was lame. At least all the other squaddies were supposedly off fighting offscreen somewhere. What was he doing that he couldn't come back to the Normandy?

Aye but he's also a soldier not a refugee, why does he act like one?

Because he is a mercenary. He honestly doesn't give a flying f*ck about anything but credits.

He was out fighting. He just happens to come back to the citadel every time Shepard does.

Maybe he had a change of heart and came back because he wanted to be a 'big goddamn hero'.

Zaeed is going into batle with the other mercs. The mercs are gathering their strength at the Citadel for the final offensive against the Reapers.
Every other military action against the Reapers prior to the final push is nothing more than a delaying action, with no hope beyond trying to bog the Reapers down long enough to buy other military forces more time to retreat and gather their strength for the final push, or to buy civilians time to evacuate. The forces committed to these delaying actions are literally sacrificing their own lives to buy time for everyone else. It is the Spartans at Thermopylae, but on a much grander scale. That is the sort of battle more suited for professional soldiers who enlisted out of patriotism, rather than a job for mercenaries, who are primarily motivated by credits. Suicidal heroism isn't a trait typically associated with mercenaries.
