Hi everyone,
after finishing ME3 I was caught by the insane desire to replay the whole saga from scrap, so I launched a new game of Mass Effect 1.

Much to my scorn, the game freezes every few minutes for some seconds changing the gameplay experience to a real hell on Earth. I can't understand what's happening, I'm playing the game on the same PC on which I played it the first time some years ago...only the video card has changed in the meantime (from geforce 88000 to Radeon 4870 hd).

I can't understand why ME3 at full detal run smooth while old ME1 gives me this problem....doe anybody can help?

Newer cards and their drivers (even though yours isn't all that new) don't play the same with older games as they do with newer games. You could try updating your driver, or rolling it back to one that works. Fix any settings in Catalyst Control Center that may be messing with the 3D graphics (I usually set to use application settings whenever possible). Check to make sure you aren't running the game in windowed mode and that vsynch is off. Another thing to check is if you have the last update (1.02), which you should have if Bring Down the Sky is installed. Worse comes to worse, a fresh install might do the trick. Don't know what other specs your computer has (OS?) or what version of the game you have (Retail disc, digital download/vendor(Steam, EA, Amazon, Gamestop,etc.)) so these are all general steps to take.

Can you be specific on which Catalyst settings you usually set?

I controlled game settings and I have full-screen (no windowed mode) and no v-synch but the problem persisted. . Game version is 1.02 (I have installed the bring down the sky dlc).

My pc is a little old...here the specific

Dual Core 2,4 Ghz
2 gigabytes RAM
OS WindowsXP SP3
Radeon 4870 HD 1 gig ram on board.

Driver version
Catalyst 2011.1109.2146.39010.

My game version is Retail disc.

Huh. This happened to me as well. I had a problem with freezing in ME3 which disappeared after I updated my video card (GeForce 8800 GT) drivers; now, however, I'm having the same problem as you with brief intermittent freezing in ME1 where it used to work fine.

Also, I did boot up ME1 briefly at an earlier point after installing ME3 and although I didn't play long enough to notice a freeze, I did notice that for some reason all the ME1 settings had been reset ... did this happen to you as well? Stupidly I can't remember if this was before or after updating the drivers -- I have a feeling it was before, but it doesn't make sense that simply installing ME3 caused problems with ME1, does it?

Sorry for butting in here, just letting you know it's not just you. :huh:

ME-3 was disrupting both ME-1 and ME-2 through its Direct3D install, which screwed up the Dx9 for the older games, particularly ME2. The older pair of ME games play poorly with Geforce cards running recent drivers, unlike ME3.

ME-1 is particularly sensitive to the newer Geforce drivers.

@evisneffo:
Eh, I'm glad I'm not alone...thus I would prefer a solution for this issue ;)

@Gorath Alpha
So, what's your advice? Should I uninstall and reinstall?

You're going to have to do a search of the archives here, using Bing, Google, Yahoo, whatever, and a redirection pointer.  The included finder here is junk, and cannot help you.  I don't remember what was happening with the Dx9 versions -- you can blame a memory that is less sharp than it was 60 years ago for that.  Here is the redirection to include in the search criteria:

I think I've heard about this issue. If I recall correctly, a fresh ME1 install will force a Direct X 9 update and the proper .NET Frameworks. I would start with that - of course backing up your saves and doing an uninstall from Control Panel. Also, I think XP SP3 still has compatibility checks? Use that and run as Admin the first time you open the game again.

First, check the ATI site for the latest driver and CCC package for your card. In CCC, I just check the box for "use application settings" wherever it's available in the 3D settings. Any other setting I try and keep a balance between quality and performance.

Good luck guys!

Checked the "use application settings" box in CCC but the issue persists. I think I'll try a fresh install....

I wonder where I can find the Bring down the Sky dlc though. When I first installed mass effect 1 I downloaded it from the old Bioware site.

Wonder no more about how to obtain BDtS - http://social.biowar...index/9618640/1

;)

And I definitely recommend the fresh install, as well as checking on updates for the driver and CCC for your card

Ah, I recall that there is an acivation limit for Mass Effect and Bring Down the Sky...what should I do about this? Is there a way to get back my license before reinstalling?

No - there are no individual licenses for BDtS anymore. They use a generic keycode that they intermittently expand the user limit in one or both of two possible ways - 1) EA uses some sort of timeframe where they expand the user limit, or 2) When EA support is contacted, they up the limit.

Whatever the case may be, read the 1st post in the BDtS thread I linked for you above - all the way to the bottom (and read the comments in the thread as well). I listed alternate codes that are still working at times (see the most recent comments to find if there's a code thats been used recently that works). You can either try another code, or contact EA support using the method I explain in the post to have them increase the user limit on the generic code. Sometimes you just have to wait a little bit for them to update the new code use limit.

Hope that helps, and yeah - BDtS is a big mess. They really ought to simply allow people to download it directly without the need for any codes since it's free.
