Is it possible for your stats to go down, other than temporarily because of a debuff? I realized (unfortunately, during a fight, because she walked up to someone to attack him with her fists) that my mage lost her staff, and then reviewing her character after her fight I realized her magic had gone down permanently by one point so she could no longer equip it. I am wondering if the fact that I had lost some approval from a party member could bring my magic down?

You can "die" in a fight and take a knock to stats, it should be right next to your doll
use a injury kit or a archmage(?) aoe healing buff
although if this is the case their should be an obvious debuff like i stated before

You might have had an item that gave you a bonus to all stats, or just magic, that was allowing you to equip the item. Now you've sold or removed that item and you can't equip the staff.
