Then again, you could argue that Wynne filled this role and she survivied for the game.

In Dragon age Origins we had wynne as a mentor type character that didnt die, Then DAVID GAIDER comes along with his new book and.... Gah no spoilers, I swear he hates mentor type characters.
Ah yes, you cleverly avoided spoiling the book. Well concealed indeed.
That being said, I enjoy mentor characters and family members. I'd rather keep them alive and around till the end of the game or at least give them a good profound character arc before doing them in.

I hated the way Wynne would talk down to me. I could not roleplay a mature character who knew about the world if I were to interact with Wynne. Therefore I always ended up having her killed after my first playthrough.
OT
Once I would have liked Flemeth to be a sort of mentor character for the PC, but that was before she had an extreme makeover.

Zu was looking for redemption and he wasn't going to find it until he sacrificed all that he had to finally undo all the damage the Lotus Assassins did to the world.Schalafi wrote:
I think what they did to Zu was just plain cruel.
His sacrifice was noble, it was also the redemption he'd been searching for since he left the Lotus. If he hadn't done what he did, he still wouldn't have believed anything he did was enough and he still would have continued to torture himself over his past.
Zu's end was tragic. But it was what made him such a beautiful character.
This can be applied to any Bioware mentor that has been sacrificed. Their sacrifices, and the tragedy that goes with it, are what make them beautiful characters..... Though personally? Zu is the only Bioware "mentor" that has ever struck a chord with me.

You can't have an Obi-Wan without him kicking the bucket heroically
Lol. But that is so overused....I am not one for Disney endings for characters, but I`m so tired of "heroic deaths"....bah....

I know it wasn't technically a Bioware game, but KOTOR 2 had Kreia, and she's one of my favorite video game characters ever. I absolutely loved interacting with her. Well, the whole game was great, but she was especially great. It is neat when there are characters with stuff to teach you or counsel you. It made the revelations about her character all the more interesting.

Agreed, Kreia is one of my favourite npcs characters of all time, Obsidian did such a great job with her. Flemeth is a pale shadow to the complex character Kreia was, just a shame the game is incomplete without mods restoring content.
In the case of Obi-Wan, well he died, but become in theory 'more powerful then you (Vader) could possibly imagine', and stuck around in Force spirit mode through the trilogy, so he never really went.

Kreia and Ravel are two of the best written characters ever.
You can do an "obi wan" witout them dying. Auron in FFX at the start makes Tidus look like a wuss, but when he rejoins the party much later in the game, they are closer in ability. You just need them to walk the character through the learning phase, go off and do their own thing and then find them later.

I can agree with your take on this, even though I really find killing off good npcs hard to take.
The thing that really p***ed me off was that he wasn't even mentioned in the epilogue.

XXXXXXX doesn't XXX. Not that the Consular's story is particularly awesome, but saving the mentor is a critical point to the story rather early on.
No! I haven't finished that storyline yet!
Zu was one of my favs...I really hope to see someone like him again.

I really like Flemeths new look, It makes her look dangerous.
Flemeth's "whisper in the shadows" comment made me think of her as Darkwing Duck.
Your comment reinforced that.

Technically, Wynne, much like Auron, was already dead when she attained her mentor position.
We need someone with the sheer badassery of Auron to be in DA. Or someone like Auron.
