I keep seeing people posting on how op spell casting is in this game, i seem to remember the origional giving me the WILDEST times with casters, Sarevok and other bad asses aside, it was casters i truely feared in that series, why are people expecting anything else in this game?

It all depends on the world the game is taking place in. Baldur's Gate took place in the forgotten realms and nothing was more powerful then a mage in that setting. They could cast spells like time stop and dragon breath which would wipe everything out without damaging your own party members. Dragon Age is pretty similar in that Mages are the most powerful and feared people in the land. If you can get close to them then they are pretty fragile. A stealth rogue can take out a non Arcane Warrior farily quickly. IMO it matters little what class is the most powerful in the game as this is a single player game. You can play a warrior or rogue and still enjoy the game.

The difference is that BG casters are really squishy. With the exception of dragons - especially Draconis - but hey, they are dragons. Even Gangax doesn't really have much HP. They just have tons of protection spells you need to remove and a high magic resistance. But lots of Breach and Lower Resistance spells will usually take care of that.
DAO mages have the least HP of all classes too and they won't last long in a melee fight. but there are still mage bosses who can take quite a beating.
And using magic against them is just a matter of out-damaging them. In BG, offensive spells were largely useless without removing the protection first.
