C'mon Zaeed and Miranda, for some reason I want you two to live but you're not helping!

This has probably been asked multiple times, and been answered multiple times, but I can't be arsed sifting through old threads to find my answer so I'm hoping a kind soul will help~

Anyway, I'm currently near the end of my Mass Effect 2 re-playthrough on the PS3, the Reaper IFF mission is available to me; but I only have Zaeed's and Miranda's loyalty missions and Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC left to do.

Now, Zaeed; our resident goddamn Merc. I've have tried at multiple times throughout my game time to do his loyality mission with a Paragon run (save the workers, gain his loyalty with Paragon charm) and with each run the Paragon charm at the end has been greyed out for me. I've just finished my 5th run of Zaeed's mission and I'm getting nowhere.

And Miranda. Her loyalty mission went swimmingly, BUT I don't get to Paragon/Renegade Charm/Intimidate between her and Jack's conflict, so I'm forced to pick. In my books: Jack > Miranda - but I don't want to have to choose, I like Jack more but I love them both.

My Paragon Bar: Just entered the last (fifth) section of the bar, about 2/10's across that.
My Renegade Bar: 1 and 1/10 bar's across.

Level 21, no ME1 Import (obviously, PS3!), fresh character.

Now is there any way for me to increase my Paragon in the Lair of the Shadow Broker pack? At least enough to get Zaeed and Miranda okay and dandy with me? I'd hoped to save LotSB until I finished the game for the extra dialogue, but I guess I can wait until another playthrough. So far, doing stuff for Liara gives me Renegade, so I've stopped doing her quests (she wants me to off the Observer or something), any chance for any Paragon points in there?

I'd rather find out here and not waste my time doing the Shadow Broker's longass mission if there's no chance at getting some Paragon. I'd rather just start again.

Wow I wrote a lot, I'm bored. Thanks for reading!

Good job you said that because starting again might be the best bet. Possibly the only bet in fact. There's some paragon points to pick up in LotSB as I recall, though I'd say its main value is in story, gameplay and loot, but there's a fair chance it won't make a difference for you at this point. The problem you have is that morality in ME2 isn't based on an absolute value but a relative value. In other words you don't need X paragon points or renegade points to get those conversation options in a particular situation, you need to have picked up X percent of the paragon/renegade points you've had the opportunity to pick up so far. If the game needs you to have a 75% paragon percentage for something it doesn't care if you've got 200 paragon points because if the most you could have got to that point is 300 then your percentage is only 67%.

Why they changed it from ME who knows, but it's got three big practical effects. First, the paragon and renegade bars are fairly meaningless since they don't show what's important - you can fill them and still not make the grade for a conversaton option you really want if you'd chosen a neutral option once too often earlier in the game. Second, because you get points for using paragon and renegade conversation options it follows that you get penalised when you don't or can't take them, which means that once you start failing to get those conversation options it's likely to get worse and you'll miss on more and more of them as the game progresses. Third, as a consequence of all this you can easily have insufficient points to do a paragon run of Zaeed's loyalty mission if you play it late on in a mostly paragon game but you can do it easily if you make it the very first mission after acquiring the Normandy while your points are probably in single figures. Similar thing applies to the Miranda and Jack loyalty missions and resolving their fight (also Tali/Legion) - the later you leave it the harder it tends to be to retain both character's loyalty, but unfortunately you can't get them out of the way as early as Zaeed's mission.

Annoyingly for you this probably means playing extra missions and maxing the paragon points in them won't make a difference now unless your paragon percentage is only just too low. Odds are that the small improvement in your overall percentage from getting every paragon point possible in LotSB won't be enough to nudge it high enough for either Zaeed's mission or the Miranda/Jack fight, and unless they both happen to require the same percentage it's practically certain that it won't get it high enough for both of them. If you restart the game you have three options to help with this. First, which IMO is best, use a character with high a paragon score imported from ME because part of this score will carry over into ME2 and make these paragon tests a hell of a lot easier. Second, give up trying to roleplay the conversations and simply select the paragon option each and every time even if you hate your Shepard for saying it. Third, use one of the morality point glitches to boost your paragon values so massively so that you don't have to worry about it any more. You can do this for paragon points after helping Samara kill Morinth by asking Samara if she's okay and then saying you're not ready to leave yet and rinse+repeat as needed, or right at the beginning after meeting Jacob and Wilson (instructions here). I'd say the second one is better because while they're both a pain in the arse and take a fair bit of time to build up a really bullet proof quantity of morality points at least you can do it really early on and then just role play the rest of the game properly without worrying about whether choosing the neutral conversation option will hurt you later.

Wow, thanks for taking the time out to respond as thoroughly as you did. I never understood how the Paragon/Renegade system worked in ME2 and it's a major hassle but your explanation cleared it up.

I've already gotten 2 characters, one that went pure Paragon and one that went pure Renegade so I really wanted a roleplaying character. I think I will start from the beginning and take advantage of those morality point glitches.

I hope they're still in affect on the PS3 (never had to hope that a glitch remains unfixed before :| That's new.)

Thanks again for the response~

You can always just use Gibbed to give yourself extra paragon to get the dialogue option, then take that many points off afterwards.
