I will be the last to complain about the way they look now, but in the first codex you get in Origins, former Senior Enchanter Maleus wrote "It took a form that I would call female, though I had no doubt that it could appear otherwise."

I like the way they look now, but if their trying to tempt a straight female wouldn't they want to take the form of a sexy dude?

One form is a practical limitation, it is expensive to create multiple character models. For the same reason we don't see female dwarves.

I wondered the same thing. Them taking the form of an attractive man to titillate a straight woman/gay man/ bisexual either  is probably very likely to occur in theory, but not something that the games themselves are going to reflect. Not only because it requires more resources, but also because it would be impossible to predict what sexuality the players have decided for their characters to have.

I would think from a lore perspective, it's less about the physical form of the demon and more about what that demon does or says. Most demons will utilize some form of coercion or cajoling (the Sloth demon in DA:O, the various demons in the DA2 Night Terrors quest, etc).

So, while they appear in their sultry purpley form, their power also lies in how they whisper to their victims - what promises they make, what mental illusions they craft. And that defies the sensuality aspect, because they're getting to the figurative heart of *mortal* desires/fears.

Haven't we already seen that the desire demon in Night Terrors can take another form? She could turn herself into Wesley to convince Aveline to betray Hawke. And before that, she pretended to be Feynriel's father.

I think they can if they are engaging you directly / trying to tempt you. When you go into the Fade with Isabella she talks about how she could see the ship the desire demon was offering her as a part of a larger illusion of what was being proffered in exchange for cooperation.  And we've seen them take other forms in the Fade at least during that same quest, as has been mentioned above (though we were intruding in those scenes already in progress of course).  As far as manifestations outside the Fade I'm not entirely sure what they're capable of, because they don't really flex their powers AT the Player Character very often.

Of course, it makes sense in that respect why we don't see different forms, usually we aren't the focus of the demon, though it would be cool if, in an upcoming title, we were and got to experience a CS style offer of serious temptation from those demons we're always waving off with nary a moment of pause because they are just another sprite talking at us about candy in their van.

^I think it would be interesting if we were tempting with something else than power for a change. A demon offering to save one of your companions (or your LI) from death would give a lot more players reason to consider.

Agreed.

It's sort of like the 'Mage Fenrismancers/Andersmancers - would you ever use blood magic to save his life, knowing how much he hates it' quandry....

Ooooh I like that idea, if a demon actually did something like that, I'm certain a lot of players would make a deal.
I was doing another playthrough of DA:O and the pride demon in Ortan Thaig just gave me 21 Sovereigns or something and if you killed it you got some pretty good armour from what I can recall.
I'd rather kill it.

I'd like something that would actually make me consider accepting what the demon offers.

Yeah there were to many good vs evil decisions, not enough grey areas
