Hey, just played through DA2 on hard and I'mn gonna start a new playthrough, on Nightmare.

Just wondering what the "ultimate party" would be like? Like what class for Hawke and builds for different companions.

I only have the black emporium dlc, so I can't rely on Blood Dragon Armor (which 99 % of the guides say you should use for 50 % of the game).

As far as I've read on the forum, the ultimate party would be:

Dual-wield Hawke with Assassin / Duelist
Varric
Anders
Merril

I honestly can't see how a build works without a tank in the party :P Aveline was gold in my Hard palythrough, tanking through everything while everyone else put down the damage.

I personally think shadow assassin makes the most powerful party - shadow adds a ridiculous amount of damage (+100% critical damage), survivability (decoy/inconspicuous), and CCC setups (disorientating criticals).

But yes, DW hawke is probably the most powerful although all three classes can facewipe.

Since you don't have dlc item packs you'll just have to stick with the armour sets (e.g champions gear) for the most part. Blood Dragon Armour isnt necessary at all- although the armour it provides is great in the very beginning, by the end of act 1 its already super-ceeded.

Oh and party-wise, anders, bethany/merrill and varric/sebastian are usually deemed best. This is somewhat to do with the versatility of mages/archers (crowd control, CCCs) and how they don't waste dps needing to close in on enemies - which has a special significance for CCCs (and one of the main reasons why melee companions aren't as good).

anders and bethany can use haste and heroic aura - probably the two best party-wide buffs. Dual haste turns hawke into a blur of death. They can also heal.
merrill and bethany can debuff enemies with hexes
all mages can switch staves to match enemy vulnerabilities, doubling their basic attack damage.

varric's personal tree is beastly and he has one of the highest dps of the companions. he can also manage threat, helping to increase the survivability of weaker companions.

The fundamental idea behind 'not needing to use a tank' is to front-load damage and just kill enemies before they can deal much damage.

basically, if you crowd control elites (assassins, rage demons etc) and quickly kill them off with spike damage (CCCs, focus fire etc), they can be removed from the fight right from the start and the ability for enemies to deal damage is greatly limited.

since maintaining complete crowd control over every enemy isn't always possible, the other idea is to use threat management to redirect enemies away from your more fragile companions and towards either hawke or your 'tank'. in the case of a warrior-less party, your tank will be your dog (which can take an amazing amount of damage/threat) and your decoy. Also, it is usually better to have enemies after hawke rather than your companions since you can manually dodge attacks with hawke by moving out of the way.

All of this is ideally done through tactics/controlling hawke.

watch some of the vids from Arelex's guides or my guides for some examples of what I mean.

I've never really gone with any guides or anything, just sort of figured out what worked for me and the Hawke that I chose.

I didn't have any DLC item packs either, and I've got a shadow assassin rogue Hawke. My party goes without a tank most of the time - my usual party consists of Anders (both for healing, and Elemental and Primal trees), Isabela (it's true that Varric's personal tree is quite epic, but I quite love Isabela's as well), and my last slot is swapped around depending on my mood or the quest I'm undertaking.
For "little" quests (secondary, companion, extra, etc.) I usually bring Merrill. I love her banter with Isabela, and her and Anders bring the pew pew while Isabela and I shank everybody up. Pretty indestructible, and a lot of fun. I'm not necessarily all for eliminating all the enemies as quickly as possible; I like a good fight.
For "big" quests though, such as main story or DLC (MotA and Legacy), I do usually bring a tank. I swap between Aveline and Fenris, but tend to prefer Fenris since his personal tree is quite excellent and he makes for great crowd control. He also has higher magic resistance than Aveline, which is always good.

Figure out what works for you. But parties CAN survive (even pwn!) without a tank!

The One-Shot concept
D/W shadow assassin Hawk. With rotating Aveline, Merrill, Anders, and Bethany; as my main companions. Merrill can tank too. I use Varric or Isabela too sometimes. In defense of Aveline, the stagger- lacerate combo is nasty. Isabela has some nice defensive abilities. Once in a while i use her in the tank role.

The Double-Shot concept
S/S reaver templar Hawk. With Aveline, Isabela, Sebastian/ Varric. I use Fenris from time to time, but brittle ccc are useless here. With this unit stagger-disorient-stun and the fight's over.

Nuke-Um concept
Blood/ Force mage Hawk. With Merrill, Anders, Varric. I wish i could use Bethany but you know...
