You forgot the roll back part. If you try to Nova a Phantom right out of Charge they can and will OHKO you, or melee stagger you. On Gold as a Vanguard if you are staggered, you're pretty much going to die if any other enemies are able to target you.
Actually this should be the way to play against any enemy, not just Phantoms and other insta-killers. A lot of them can stagger you on close range. And as you pointed out, this is most likely a death sentence on higher difficulties when there are others around.

I killed more if them than they did me over the weekend but they got their hits in.
One team I was with looked strong until wave 9 when a pair of Phantoms nailed all of us from behind.
They arent unstoppable but they are an enemy worthy of respect.

I don't think that is a glitch. In my experience as a HV, if you charge a full barriered, not-warped phantom on Gold who is looking at you, she almost ALWAYS intercepts your charge with her sword and staggers you. Then you can't Nova, which means you're pretty much toast.
3 best ways to prevent that:
- Get her reaved/warped/stasised before you charge her
- Use weapons to wear down her Barrier far enough. If you take down her barrier with your first charge, she gets staggered and then you can Nova.
- If she is in cover run up to her and Nova first. She gets staggered, and your following charge takes her Barrier down completely. Then it's almost easy.
The most fun/challenge I can have is trying to take out 1 or 2 phantoms with my Human Vanguard on Gold without any help. It's almost as if I'm playing against another human player.
Sometimes I feel like saying "well played, ma'am" when I finally kill a Phantom after a prolonged fight.

AA - Stasis and headshot till 1/2 barrier bars, then warp MELLEEEEEE
AJ - Reave and keep behind cover, spam reave and shoot till he no barrier bars. If close use melee at suitable distance since they freeze and can't move. With 0 barrier, they fly back so you can spam mellee or shoot.

If you specced for power recharge, you even get the 25% bonus right away and not just after the second charge.

maybe you don't realize they usually spawn in pairs and if you are near their spawn there will be two of them.
phantoms aren't bad. they make it exciting when you see them spawn from across the map. stasis makes them a joke. they'll either be dead or in another bubble when stasis breaks on them. When they stroll up on you you must turn your focus and take them out. I killed a ton of phantoms this weekend.

if the bubble is specced for warp you only need one biotic power for detonations and not two, warp bubble helps with swarming phantoms by setting up detonation the moment they step in the bubble.

As far as stasis and phantoms are concerned the biggest problems is morons who cant head shot them shooting so they fall over.
