Yeah, I'm on the Xbox and it's not exactly the friendliest environment for women.  I don't use a mic anymore but I've seen other girls get bashed on plenty.  I get the feeling that the Xbox is a bit more male dominated than the PC.  Not to mention, the Xbox has a lot of very young, loud/boisterous guys playing who take their gaming very seriously.  Even when they're not outright sexist, it can be a little intimidating (or at the very least irritating) when you get put in with a group of them.

Well, I meet ladies pretty often in-game. But I don't care TBH. Fellow player is fellow player. As long as they're nice, I am fine with that. (Chance male/female is maybe 70/30.)

You're pretty lucky. I know some other female gamers that play more male orientated games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield and Gears of War, and they get sexist abuse without people even hearing them talk. Just knowing they are female is enough apparently.

This website should go some way to showing you just how lucky you are.

Don't be intimidated. They're either socially maladjusted idiots or teenagers. In either case, ****-talking doesn't matter much. They're probably only bothered if you're decent, since the presence of a girl gamer that's doing better than you can be emasculating to young guys.

I've seen a bunch of female gamers actually. Of the people who have actually spoken up in PC (and that is far and few between...) a bout 20% were female. I think PC is more female friendly. After all, some article somewhere said that ~30% of gamers were female, but I think they were only referring to PC anyway.

I've played PVP games against immature children who ****** and moan when I beat them, and proceed to throw insults and make excuses as to why they couldn't win. It's not exclusive to "female gamers".

I can't help but feel that picture's a poor analogy built on the "get back in the kitchen" steroetype.

1. Professionally speaking, more men become chefs than women.
2. Cooking can be done for enjoyment or as a chore, or both. If your video game playing is a chore, then something is wrong.
3. Just because you're at the supermarket doesn't mean you can cook. I can't cook, but I still need to eat.
4. In my experience, the annoying gamer girls who do this sort of thing don't go on about how they play Peggle or stuff like that. They talk about things that guys assert that women don't play, like Call of Duty or whatever.

Sorry, really didn't mean to offend. It was strictly an observation, as I am like N7 350 or so and have yet to play with a female (one that uses a Mic, anyways). Again, sorry.

I have played with several women, and have learned most don't use their mic until they've played with you even that they think you won't treat them different. Most women don't like being treated like a frail person (even in game) just because they are female. They also don't like the macho men who treat them like garbage once they find out they are female. I have one I play with regular and 2 others I play with whenever we happen to be on and have a group opening at that rare same time. And do NOT make fun of their weapon/character choice or they may make you regret it big time, when they troll you in game and show you why their choice is fine.

And for the one implying we think women belong in the kitchen, I am DEFINITELY a guy and I do about 85% of the cooking in this house for usually 7 or 8 people. I love it, and they enjoy my cooking so obviously guys can be great cooks too.

Ps I play with anyone who wants to play and enjoy the game. No matter what age or gender.

Awesome Extra Credits video, makes a good point at the end. Never been part of the cool crowd or socialise much outside of work/education yet gaming I play my part and fit in, wouldn't mind helping female gamers as well seeing how females feel more "safer" for me to talk to. Can't fault EC's comments or ideas at all. For gaming I couldnt care if male, female or a mixture. Just help the team to suceed, even if it means dieing as diversion.

Regards to the opening post, they are both going up so I argue they are the same. Think I remember an article where had a higher % of females who play games than males.

Female gamers aren't nonexistent, at least in my experience. My female sibling and parent both play games. Its just they don't typically play highly competitive shooters, like CoD. They typically play RPG's and games like Sims. And this is typical among three females I know very well. They are also very good cooks, and they wouldn't like being told to get back in the kitchen.
Edit: I used to play Left 4 Dead 2 with a female friend. Even in one of the most blood soaked games ever made, you could find a female playing the game.

I've only ever played with 2 gamers who I knew were female (I'm on xbox). I'm sure I've played with more girls who just don't use mics, sadly ME3 has quite a bit of the COD demographic on it and they are absolutely horrible to women even if there aren't any known girl players in the game. I can't count the number of misogynistic and sexist imbeciles I've come across on XBOX live.
