Oh and... LONG LIVE THE GOOD FEMALE GAMERS!! You girls actually make MP quite enjoyable, and surprisingly the ones that talk are usually very cool people.
Actually I gotta agree there... I don't know anyone else playing ME3 sadly, but in other games I play the female gamers are usually the most fun, cursing up a storm at some game bug in BF3, or someone killing them in LoL.... dragging people into nights of drinking games where you take shots if your killed... generally being a lot more sociable even while the games going on.... while guy gamers I know are just plain.... silent while gaming... I don't mean to stereotype tho, it's just those who I know personally.

Women are not going to show themselves. For three reasons.
1. Guys hitting on them in-game.
2. Harassment.
3. Unfitting "banter"
Wall of text warning. Writing some interesting tidbits of human psychology that fit rather well with the subject.
On Guys Hitting on Them In-Game:
There are quite a few guys who think that a game may lead them to a significant other. These guys have not thought about what this looks like from the female's point of view. They have not read up any sort of human social psychology.
Particularly when talking about... "Romantic" feelings people need a face/body to tie to the voice/personality, and it is the physical person that is bonded to (Especially for the women). I am not only talking about genitalia, I am talking physical presence. A woman simply cannot have those kind of feelings for a guy and sustain them if he does not have a physical presence in her life.
Example, the classic "Jodie" stories in the military, when a wife or girlfriend cheats when one is in training or on deployment.Or the one of the female's classic complaints about a relationship "He's never there for me."This works to an effect both ways, but it SEEMS that distance has more of an impact on females than males.Even if the impact is equal, the effect is the same: That kind of thing does not happen over a game.Keeping that in mind, how do you think a girl mentally reacts to a faceless voice hitting on her? It would be, in their words, creepy. They seem to be rather fond of that word.
On "Harassment":
More of an issue on XBox LIVE and other services that allow you to easily talk to or message ANYONE at ANYTIME.Pretty well summed up in the penny arcade video, guys unhappy with their lives just trying to spread some misery around. Either gaining a laugh out of it, or simply hating. I daresay this is a little less common than hitting on them, but this is just as annoying. With some girls it just ruins their day when someone random insults them. Depending on the way one was raised, one would either shrug off the insult or just feel like crap because of it.Females are more social than guys, and an all-female enviroment is generally more obviously caring than an all-guy enviroment.
Good example would have to be the differences in the way we socialize in general. Girls make almost constant eye-contact with each other when talking, and comments are in general supportive when dealing with something unpleasant. Eye contact is infrequent with guys in general, an occasional glance will suffice. When dealing with something unpleasant, guys will tell each other something along the lines of "its not so bad", and compare amusing stories of when things went worse.
When I talk with girls, I try to maintain eye contact as they do. This does not work well, it ends up being similar to a jamming signal. to put it in nerd terms, its like I am trying to write something, and there are constant popups about pretty smilies or something, its distracting. And if they have pretty eyes... distraction * 10.
On "Unfitting 'Banter':
"See the above notes on female social interaction. They take comments in a conversation much more seriously than guys do.So while guys may insult each other for fun, girls will more likely take it seriously. To make it more obvious that we are not serious, we make the insults far too ridiculous and lacking imagination to be considered valid. Well that is just viewed as pettiness to your usual female. Banter is rarely received well.
I fall victim to this, too. When I think someone is allright, I begin to mess with them. A girl I play laser tag with is a platinum-blonde, so her hair glows slightly in the black lights. In particular, one lock of hair that she bobby-pins off to the side glows about as much as a white t-shirt. I call her "glowstreak", even this was not recieved too well at first. I eventually talked with her, clarified that nicknames are not detrimental, and agreed to simply call her "Katie" outside of lasertag. That kind of stuff us guys do with friends is not well recieved with the ladies, many of us do not understand.
It does not matter, either way. Female, male, makes no difference.Well, it does for them for the above reasons, but for guys it should not matter. What should matter is whether or not a team player opens their mic or not.
There is little to no incentive for a woman to open the mic, and a lot of incentive to keep it closed at all times.
Interesting insights, especially the bit about insults. I can only speak for myself, but without the little not-to-be-taken-too-seriously conversational jabs and jokes that men such as myself interject into virtually all conversation, I'd be bored as all hell talking to anyone who didn't have something serious to discuss.

22.6% of girls fall into a hot/attractive category. the odds of playing with a girl gamer are approximately 1 in 4077. i have played with wat i assume is girl player only once but the odds she was hot arent that great. why do i care if she was hot? well she needs to be hot bc i mistake their voices for ten year old boys
Quite possibly another reason the females are keeping silent and "undercover", if you will, is this inescapable connection between their worth and their physical attractiveness. Why the hell do you even need to mention the possible attractiveness of your faceless video game partners? And why is this something only mentioned in the context of the female gamer? (Yes, yes, I know there are a lot of jokes about ugly grognard males playing video games, but that's not the point I'm making here.)
Also I have a strong suspicious that those statistics fall under the category of 'I made this up', but if you have a "source" I'd like to see it.

Come on, make a joke about how we belong in the kitchen now. That's what everyone expects from you. It will be hilarious, I tell you.

And because I really can't imagine why a female would have a Batarian avatar.
In my case it's for a variety of reasons:
- I've grown fond of them.
- Avatar choices are limited.
- Wanted one of the least used ones so I can find my own posts more easily.
- I kinda find them less ugly now than I did before, believe it or not. I mean, they're still ugly. But I can't help but feel that the batarian soldier I play is kinda hot. In his own asskicking way.
*ahem*
All very good and well thought out reasons... how dare you grace BSN with your logic! Don't you know we are a vitriol community of "entitled whiners" and seek only to discriminate and destroy the game industry?
We can't allow your kind of people here (smart logical) because you may just improve our overall image, and that... is something we just can't have.

I try to build my mass effect teams like an action movie, so we need a diverse group. We need the streetwise black guy, the bad ass chick, and maybe a british guy. I try to get my british guy and streetwise black guy to be one and the same, so we can get a stoner, a hacker, or a latino transgender stoner hacker from australia.
This made me lol

Back in the day though, finding a gamer girl was an epic quest! After searching years for even a hint of a rumor about one SOMEWHERE in the same state as you, evidence may have turned up that was most likely fabricated by some douchenozzle (as the french would say) trying to fake a gamer girlfriend....

I don't use a mic and everyone is probably better off for it. I tend to get a little sweary when I play. Not very ladylike to drop MF bombs on air.
Is it wrong when someone finds that attractive...? Girls with dirty pottymouths, mmmmmmm hahah
