None of the options are consistently good.
Diplomatic: P---y
Sarcastic: D--k
Aggressive: A-s
I would like a neutral option. Sometimes the diplomatic sounded that way, more often than not only the investigate/weird extra symbols turned sarcastic/aggressive Hawke into a neutral tone.

In real life, people react in different ways to different experiences or environments. I felt like that was missing in DA2. If you tried to switch tones depending on the situation, Hawke mostly just came across as bipolar.

Understandable from a writing/voice acting standpoint, but not very good for player agency.

I agree with the op. Although I enjoyed my first play-through, it got a bit tiresome when you could only sound like 1) a fruitcake, 2) an insensitive jerk, or 3) an aggressive, insensitive jerk.

Exactly.Although I got the same feeling with Shepard sometimes, even in ME1.Choosing renegade options in certain circumstances often made me sound like an insensitive,self-absorbed jerk (there were exceptions),when I only wanted to be more assertive / sarcastic / sarcastically diplomatic,if there is such a thing lol.
Likewise, being a paragon sometimes made me feel like a magnanimous jerk.A walking oxymoron.
I feel the tones should be more nuanced, not only representing extremes. Of course,in ME paragon / renegade do mean "extremes",but you know what I am getting at. It is just not very immersive.

Throw the tone icons out and just show us what our character will say instead, that is my opinion.
The Deus EX:HR wheel,IIRC,showed intent and had text box support, and I thought it was brilliant. There is a thread about it somewhere on the forums, too. Would be great, imho.

Since the VPC and personality tones are staying (though will likely be tweaked), I thought I'd bring something up that irritated me with the diplomatic tone: It was too cheesy, too wimpy, and...well, this sums up my feelings towards some of the responses (not to be immature, that really does express tmy sentiments best).
I found that the only tone I really liked in DAII (apart from the sarcastic one for my snarky character) was the aggressive tone. However, I like playing good guys, and the diplomatic tone would be my primary choice. So, a request: make the diplomatic option more realistic, less cheesey, and less cringey.
Diplomacy is telling people what they want to hear.
The major problems I have with tones is because of the inflection the VA's put on the various tones, flicking between options makes the character appear to have multiple personalities, rather than a single individual taking a slightly different approach.

You could do a lot worse than copy DX:HR... I could make a snarky comment here about ME3 but I won't

Could mean that. One of its definitions is,however :
diplomacy : skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility : tact
This is the meaning I normally assign to the word when I think of "diplomatic tone",but that is,of course only my interpretation. A tactful approach to disagreeing lol. After all,you do not need to be diplomatic,if you agree.
But diplomacy could also mean telling people what you want to say and having them believe this is what they wanted to hear
Edit: I mentioned a saying about diplomacy on page 1,but could not remember who said it.
Found it - here is one way of looking at it:
"A diplomat is a person who can tell you to go to hell in such a way that you actually look forward to the trip."
