I imported my Sentinel recently, and picked up Defense Drone because I was curious about what exactly it actually does and how it works.
I'm now a little past Palaven, have used it in most engagements, and am still completely baffled as to what exactly it actually does and how it works.
Anybody have any tips on this thing? How to spec it, how and when to use it, what exactly the point is?

It is supposed to shock enemies that get too close to you. I tried it briefly on a Claymore Soldier and on an Engineer, but I found it rarely did anything, or at least anything that I noticed.
From my brief experience, the Defense Drone works best if you hug cover a lot and do not move around too often; basically, if you like to sit back and snipe, the Defense Drone is good since it can shock and stun enemies that get too close.
If you move around a lot, the Defense Drone becomes ineffective. Once you start to move, it stays in one spot for a bit before it follows after you. During that time, it will be out of range and will not protect you.
I tend to move around a lot with my characters so it was largely useless to me. It may be better suited to a Cloaked Sniper Infiltrator build.
I know YouTuber Trinity82x used Defense Drone on some Infiltrator and Vanguard videos.

by not using it and picking a bonus power that better complements your class?
like its been said its more of an anti flank power for people who like to stay in one place, not a vanguard which is the exact opposite

Here is a better video by Trinity82x showing the Defense Drone in action (using Vanguard). Video annotations point out when Defense Drone shocks a nearby enemy. It happens more frequently then you would think originally. Still, I think there are better bonus powers than Defense Drone.

Well, sure. But sentinels are so blatantly OP you could pick a bonus power that just autokills you every time you use it and still moonwalk backward and blindfolded through the game.
Interesting vid tho, thanks. I guess I'm overlooking it in the chaos a lot, it does seem to be more active than I had noticed. I'm already a power spammer with this toon, maybe I'll scope my Vindi and camp a bit more.

On a related note, does anyone know if the Engineer's Drone Mastery level 6 evolution also applies to Defense Drones? It doesn't say so in the description, but logically it should!

I have seen it work well on Sniper-focused infiltrators, if you stay in one spot to snipe. The little guy can quickly stun enemies in melee range (such as husks) that you missed seeing while scoping.theillusiveman11 wrote...

Other than that, I have not found a good use. The problem with Defense Drone I find is that if you like to move a lot, it is near useless since it takes a moment or two before following you. This usually means that you are out of its range for long periods of time.
I have tried it on an Engineer and Soldier but I move around a lot so it did not do much to help me.
YouTube user Trinityy82x has a video with a Vanguard using Defense Drone. It worked better than you would think. but there are better powers. Here are some videos showing an Infiltrator with Defense Drone.
