The one regret I have is that I didn't see early enough that Shepard was never intended to be my character in the end. Much depression and anger would've been avoided since I would've approached the story with a different mindset.

They did state several times that it is your shepard, it's the players story even when they promote me3 & their games are made to make you attached

I think it was because of the leak, the rewrites & that they cut content this happened

here is something interesting that indicates cut content

The claims of "These are your Shepards" did kinda muddy that fact, huh?  ;)

Yeah, they did. And that it wasn't in the end isn't even ending-related. The dreams, the stupid lines, the limited options and all the autodialogue are quite enough.

I expect DAI to be different in that after the Q&A at GamesCom yesterday, but even so, I will not get as invested again, and that's a very good thing. That's what I learned from ME3, and because of that I don't regret having been invested.

I don't know if DAI will be different or not, but I am hearing the same lines as I heard in the Mass Effect series:  "You are the Inquisitor"  "This is your story"  Wish I could believe that but, you know, Mass Effect.

Yesterday at GamesCom, I asked about that, and they said specifically that the Inquisitor would be different from Shepard and we would have more freedom to express ourselves. So I think they really aim for that. Whether it will be satisfying....we'll have to wait and see, but DA2 was significantly better in that regard than ME3.

This statement by Jonathan Perry (cinematic designer for DAI) was rather telling about ME3, actually: "Well....Shepard was Shepard, you just directed his actions. We want to do things differently."

Good to hear.

In any case, I don't hold caution against Bioware as a whole. They're not one entity. There are all kinds of people there. I'm fairly sure Walters is the reason for the cinematic direction of ME3 (and parts of ME2). He is what he is. A more traditional story writer. A comic book writer (and an entertaining one as well). I'd just be surprised if he has even created and ran a pen and paper RPG campaign with friends. It doesn't seem like he comes from that world. He's more interested in telling a more specific/focused story. And ME3 is the result when a writer like that takes the lead.

Those were indeed annoyances that detracted from the game.  But if the end could have put me in a place where I could "reclaim" Shepard, Where after the end I could imagine him finding peace after the war, I could forgive that. .

Sadly, it seems the writers think they know my Shepard better than I do.  And their result was to taint the entire trilogy for me.

It's nice to hear.  And as I noted elsewhere, I didn't hate DA2 as much as some did.  But I am now very gun-shy about any claims Bioware makes.  I actually remember people saying of ME3 "Don't worry, it was made by a completely different team than DA2"

Except that it mostly only applies to ME3 Shepard. I still don't understand why they suddenly decided to push their own vision of emotional Shepard in many cutscenes/situations in last part of the Trilogy.

Nope.

If you feel "duped and used", guy, then that's your problem. There are a lot of people who don't.
Without intending to sound harsh or crude, you should get over yourself. So you didn't like something - people don't like stuff every day, it ain't so bad.

Mass Effect 3 single-handedly destroyed the only thing that was keeping my anxiety and depression from surfacing - escapism. Before that, I trusted games and movies as entertainment that I could fully immerse myself in without being catastrophically disappointed. Being let down by the series that was supposed to be my absolute favourite sort of... crushed that escapism. As a result, the barriers blocking my depression crumbled, and in addition to feeling bad about life in general, playing Mass Effect for any length of time causes severe anxiety... something that has spread to other entertainment products. Right now, I'm going through therapy.

So, in a word, yes.

No.

Never.

Sorry but anyone that thinks 10 minutes of a ending or even an entire game can ruin countless hours of pure joy and fun has bigger problems.

Thankfully after that absurd judgement of your fellow man, the game it self has bigger problems :)

Well, DA2's main flaws - combat, combat encounter design and reused maps - are indeed completely absent in ME3, while roleplaying is mostly fine in DA2, but severely restricted in ME3. Different teams indeed.

Maybe they recognized that ME2 Shepard had the emotional range of a brick and wanted to correct that, but didn't take into account that emotional expression must be a choice.

For a scene that does emotion right, I like to point at Leandra's death in DA2. You could express guilt for having come too late, determination assuming that something can still be done, try to make light of it without succeeding, focus on the grief or remain somewhat, but not completely detached. The writing and the voice-acting are top-notch in this scene, and your roleplaying opportunities very satisfying.

Shepard in comparison: stupidity ("The Citadel? The fight's here!") and forced emotions in the dreams.

However my love of mass effect 1 and 2 reminds me of what could have been, its just sad that there were people who loved the game more than the actual creators.

I'm sorry, but that's just wrong.  -_-

I don't regret getting into the series at all. I mean, sure it turned out be to be the little engine that couldn't that failed spectacularly when it came to story and choices but I've had my share of fun on here, met some cool homies and got my current gf as a result of it all.

Indeed.

As a result of getting invested in Mass Effect I met a whole bunch of awesome homies and bro's here to play Saints Row co-op with (superior series to Mass Effect by the way).

Nah, I'd never regret something like that. Mass Effect is still a great experience that just train wrecks at the end.

Yes, actually.

It was a great ride that ended in worst possible way imaginable.

At least it taught me not to get so invested in Bioware Games.
