ME1>ME3>ME2

ME1 had the best atomsphere, story, and the greatest ending in the series.

ME2 introduced new and improved mechanics, great characters, and a terrible story line. I still say ME2's primary purpose was to get new PS3 and FPS players into the series. If you take the LOTSB and Arrival DLC out and ME2 and add them to ME1 as DLC then ME2 becomes useless story wise.

ME3 has more improved combat mechanics, smooth conversations, and looks wonderful. Give it an ending like ME1 and it would be the best in my opinion.

ofcourse it is objective which you prefer.

As i prefer control over my character and choise in dialogue above a movie like experience I judge differently. Thinking everyone has the same preferences you have is weird to be honest.

To me it would be:
character control:
ME1 > ME2 > ME3
Dialogue:
ME2> ME1 > ME3
Combat:
ME3> ME 2 > ME1
Ending:
ME2> ME1 > ME3
overall story:
ME1 > ME2 > ME3

The good parts like tuchanka in ME3 don't compensate for the lack of coherence.
I like ME2 and ME1 about equal. 1 for the story, 2 for the game itsself. 3 is a step below that for me.

Exactly my thoughts. Mass Effect 1 had the best story and immersion into the universe and Commander Shepard. Also, I don't think the Combat is as horrid as people say it is. I still like it. That said, Mass Effect 2 did tighten up gameplay, which is appreciated. But Mass Efffect 2's focus on characters came at the cost of the main story, which I loved in the first Mass Effect. In the end, it's like nothing got done, and Mass Effect 3 seemed to make ME2's main story almost feel pointless. Mass Effect  2 also annoyed me with its reduction of RPG elements and more streamlining, but overall, it was very enjoyable, and had strengths in areas such as side missions and character missions, as well as a feel for the "darker places of the galaxy."

But Mass Effect 3... that went too far. Sure, combat was improved, but at the cost of sacrificing nearly everything else that made Mass Effect... mass Effect. People that praise Mass Effect 3's conversation system because it "played like a movie." Here's the problem, Mass Effect isn't a movie, it's a damn video game! Because it "flowed like a movie," I had less control over Shepard than I ever had before. Killing certain characters off or having to explain certain plot holes on Twitter instead of showing the **** in-game (I don't use ****ing Twitter!). Tuchanka and Rannoch do not automaticlly give the game a ten out of ten. I take the whole package into account. Everything felt bland and stripped down. A lot of major choices in the past games became somewhat pointless *cough*Rachni*cough*Collector Base*cough*Council*cough*. The ending just solidified how far Mass Effect had fallen. By taking the central element: "your choices matter", and making them mean nothing... Mass Effet 3 instantly became the worst in the series. And I don't think just the Extended Cut will fix it. There are other issues that can't be resolved now, because it's just too late.

So, here's my personal preference: ME > or = ME2>>>>>> ME3. That's just my personal opinion.

So... I am on the ME1 Citadel and OH MY GOD some random guy has more dialogue options than main antagonist of the whole trilogy...
Combat sucks though, no argue.

OP - i disagree. My thoughts (PC version)

- It is much more a role-playing game
- Nothing can take away the first introduction to the universe
- Loved the Mako and exploring + finding weird Prothean pyramids and spheres (not the vertical terrain though)
- Although all of the side quest bases/ships were the same the concept and content of the missions were great
- No stupid having to run around collecting ammo (I enjoyed tinkering with sniper rifles to see if i could create one that would fire more than twice without overheating)
- Powers recharged separately - made much more sense
- Great story and climax
- Memorable music (only the Suicide Mission matched the tunes)
- Lots of Geth unit types - Armature, Hopper (i loved these guys - jumping all over the show), Colossus

Yes its all subjective - but I still prefer ME1.

ME1 had a great story and a whole lot of mystery. The mechanics were a little crazy at times, but the game itself was phenomenal! By ME2, you pretty well know everything there is to know about the Mass Effect universe and the mystery shrinks. ME3 told a solid story, but took lots of liberties to do it, then botched the end.

ME1 is a piece of art. Combat mechanics might have sucked, but it was the birth of the most amazing sci-fi setting of history(I'm sorry but Star Wars and Star Trek settings are a joke next to Mass Effect). A RPG isn't about the combat, it's about the lore and the stories in it.

ME1 you could crouch in standing cover not only that but also crouch whilst moving if u werent in cover. sure it is clunkier but its the first game, like look at dragon age 1 and 2 how the combat style completely changed drastically its like that.

Yeah combat system in me1 sucks. So? See how popular me3 is, even with its good combat mechanics.

I mean, theres so many things that are just wrong and don't flow.

I could be on the edge of cover and sometimes I can't repeatedly shoot.

Half the time when I choose a conversation choice theres an uneasy pause between when the NPC finsishes talking and when I begin.  It seems so non organic.

Whenever I go to cover thats waist high, Shephard just stand there against it instead of crouching.  I know some will say "WELL GOD!!!....do you want the game to play for you too!!!"  But the fact is anyone with a decent mental capacity would duck appropriately.  I wouldn't think about it in life why would a soldier go "O, hai, I'm getting shot...guess I should duck" >then hit the default button to duck.

Some of the conversations aren't organic either.  It's basically NPC asks a question and the different choices start off like a completely new conversation that someone started.  It's seems sooo odd.

The scale of ME1 is still there and I the RPG elements are better.  But anyone who chooses ME1 over ME2 or ME3.....I dunno....I don't even think it's a matter of opinion.  These things in ME1 are not objective.

I don't know what game you're palying but ME1 was vastly superior to the other two on all levels.

ME 1, for me, is like being in love. I still overlook it's flaws and I did play it again recently. I enjoy it because it is the beginning of a wonderful saga (dunno bout ME3, when does that come out? hehehe) and RPG-wise it is good and I loved that it was inspired by all of the 80's sci-fi films. Glitchy, yes (I love the endless Paragon points on Noveria) I quickly learned to not use cover (I literally got stuck in a wall on Feros) and learned to just kill my enemy before they killed me.
I am still in love with it, again, so many flaws which have been pointed out by everyone, but to me it's still a fun ride.

I just started up an ME1 playthrough again and 4 years later its still beautiful and incredible to me. Exploring the Citadel...having Wrex in your squad...elevator dialogue...it all feels so wonderful!

Yeah the combat wasnt as good and I dread the inventory headaches to come later on, but the story is so much better to me.

While I loved ME2 as well, I dont think the sidequests were as great and I wanted them to streamline weapon and armor customization, not eliminate it.

Do yourself a favor when you play through ME1 again. Ask yourself why Saren was on Eden Prime and all these other worlds in the first place, and the repercussions it has for Sovereign's plan.

"It" should hit you on Virmire if you really put thought into it. And, ME3 will look infinity better by comparison.

ME1 was best for the RPG elements than combat.

ME2 and ME3 had better combat systems, better game engine, visuals, etc, but at the expense of some of the RPG elements that made ME1 special.

ME1 still holds a special place in my heart as the beginning of the journey that is Mass Effect... even with it's flaws.

ME2 I think is the best mix of Action & RPG.

ME3 took out too much of the RPG and Character interaction side that made Mass Effect a special IP. I do like that the combat system was improved and the weapon-mod system is nice. Was those improvements at the expense of auto-dialog and minimized dialog options? I don't know but if so it was a sacrifice I would have done without.

Story, Characters, and Combat are all important in Mass Effect but I'd choose Story & Characters over Combat as the two most important.

I'm not sure if you meant you're replaying ME1 or you're playing it for the first time but if it's the latter I'd just say that's more proof that ME3 wasn't made for Mass Effect/Bioware fans, it was made for an entirely different demographic. If I cared about combat mechanics that much I wouldn't have played ME1 in the first place.

On PC ME1 is great for me, even in Combat (though the AI sucks)
You've got every single ability right at your fingertips.
I'm probably also one of the only ones who enjoy the elevator sequences, and i miss the Mako, just for exploration's sake. ME2 had some boring side missions, and ME1 at least had conversation in them.

There's also the fact that the dialogue tree was INVENTED for ME1, so obviously it's going to work better after a few years of smoothing (though I think ME3 butchers it). People need to remember context when they're viewing older games, in 2007 ME1 was groundbreaking and there were no games like it (in large part because of the invention of the dialogue tree), in 2012 ME3 is an improvement over a 5 year old game (which is the base line of what I'd expect not an accomplishment) but it's no where near the achievement ME1 was relative to current games. So for me it doesn't feel like it has the same level of ambition or effort behind it, it seems like they were more concerned with making a game that sold than continuing to push the boundaries with innovation.

I liked the elevator sequences, or I at least prefered them to the boring loading screens in ME3. And at least in ME2 the loading screens were context relative (i.e you get a landing screen when you're landing a taking off screen when you're taking off etc) you just get the same lame screen for everything in ME3.

Its like comparing a retro game to current games. For example Quake II still holds a special place in my gaming history, but that doesn't mean its the best shooter ever made from a technical standpoint.

^This. I think that ME1 is still the best of the trilogy on the RPG side.

360/PS3 gamer? Because on PC there are next to no loading screens.

ME1 and ME2 can both be argued to be better than the other.

ME3, on the other hand, was just entirely disgustingly bad I headcanoned it out of existance.

i'll take ME1 and its broken elements over ME3 and its broken elements all day long. comes to a point when random npc's in ME have more dialogue than the ME2 squadmates in ME3.

ME was the best even with the graphics being weak in comparison. No scrounging for ammo and a car with a sniper scope! And of course there's the Vermire cruise (I try to avoid running over the crabs)

I'm going through the first one again too. It's not that old, but man, it sure could use a remake.

Imagine if they took 3's graphics and mechanics and applied them to 2 and 1, then repackaged all three as a single, seamless game. Awesome.

I hope they do exactly this years from now when the new consoles are out.
