This month's challenge is "New 'Better Looking' Weapons"

Everybody makes 1 original weapon, it can be simple and low-poly, it can be complicated. In terms of difficulty Vs. Ease, I think this one is entirely in the hands of the designer.

This theme was suggested by Eradrain.

Guidelines:
  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to me (NWNCCCMakers @ gmail.com) or a non-Vault link provided by June 4th, 2012 (which is a Monday) at 10 AM EST. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)
Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster (otherwise I will just pester you with questions!):
  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot *from in game* for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie).
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. ** Placeables and monsters should include a portrait. **
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
  • If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I’m horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.
Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!
If you have concerns/questions about this month’s Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here
***When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.***

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can:
vote for June's theme. The voting dead line is June 1st, 2012 at 8 AM EST.

Um...shouldn't the title say "May 2012 Custom Content Challenge: New Weapons"?

Since we've got a theme, I can say what painful device I'm going to be trying to (convincingly) make.  Two words:

Fire Whip
Yup, a whip made entirely of fire emitters. :wizard:

My guess would be you're allowed to do either; there don't tend to be specific restrictions on if they have to be overrides or not with these monthly things. :)

A snake whip sounds like it could turn out cool.  And it would be a great fit for the drow of my PW, who worship a snake-themed god (instead of the standard spider-themed goddess).

And I agree with Rubies.  Whatever you feel like making, either something to override an existing weapon or something to add new options, would work great.

I'm going to be making some staff override models to improve the existing ones - I hope it hasn't been done already! [Sneakily eyes TAD...] :)

Why are you looking at me like that? Just because I may have included quarterstaves somewhere, or are you thinking magic staves?

In all seriousness, more staff models area always welcome.  Think of all the iconic movies, myths, stories, and artwork that feature a staff of some sort.  The reforged ones I did are just my interpretation of how they should be made, and the magic staff ones are PW-specific and not publicly released.

A couple helpful notes for those that want to override default NWN weapons:

Making a new model will automatically override the default 3d model, whether used in the override folder or in a hak.  However, if you are making new inventory icons to go with the new part(s), you may need more than one version...

if intended for use in just the override folder, you should have icons in the normal 32 bit .tga format.  Such new icons will show up in-game and in the toolset.

If intended for use in a hak, you will also need the icons as .dds files.  The .tga version will still be needed for the toolset, but the .dds version will be needed to change the icons in-game.  Strange, I know, but it's just a quirk of this game.

I love the idea of a flame whip and snake headed whips. Very drowish.

I agree, improved staves, both magical and not is highly desired. There seem to be a number of options for this: the "Lisa" holdable route, the quarter staff weapon route, and the magic staff route. Which ever route you take, I'll follow. :)

[edit] I missed that you were doing these as an override. Still a great idea! But ignore my rambling above.[/edit]

Since TAD's already got an override set I'll be doing additional models instead - honestly I just wanted to avoid as much text editing as possible, I'm a big fan of overrides just for that. :P

Right. Well. Hrmph.

Twas thinkin' o' takin' it easy this month ta finish thet *frisky* hut.

Trust the old wizard ta commit me ta somethin' new. Lucky twas fer him I'd already done somewhat on a certain deva's sword.

So I'll be doin' a winged longsword named Mercy. An' the old wizard'll do the magic bits what make her special.

Afore then *casting a gimlet eye* ye better broach another keg. Blasted hut drank me last one dry.

I think that's a really cool idea, especially if someone wants to create a hissing weapon soundset! ;-)

The way I interpret it, the theme is about New and/or Better weapons. So either would be appropriate.

Plan B (...or wait, it's C...) - I'm going to be using an improved method of my Freezing/Flaming Sphere texture animations to make less magical (but still fairly shiny) versions of a few weapons, and some in-flight arrows, to fit those low-medium magic servers that try to stay away from too much glowing. Though the arrows might be a tiny bit glowy.

A teeny tiny bit glowy? Just a smidge of bling? :)

Sounds good, Rubies. Lookin forward to this and the other plans. Improved whips are welcome!

I decided not to procrastinate too much this month.  My contribution is done and will be emailed out in a few minutes.

Whip part models top 9 (color 1), middle 9 (color 1), and bottom 9 (color 1).  Bottom and top parts are blanks, everything is built into the middle model, just to make things easier for merging with existing content (the higher poly handle wouldn't look good with older original whip models).  The middle one is the one with all the important animations...I supermodeled this to the default wwhip_m_011.

I removed the VFX node, so that no matter what extra damage a builder puts on this whip, it will always just look like fire.  I tested before making the change, and all the other weapon FX just looked odd with the fire.

AD, don't let finishing early slow you down: You could work on points for style, and do different colored flames, or at least do the full gamut... acid whip, frost whip, sonic whip, lightning whip, etc.

Nah.  I'm going to stick to just one this time, like the original theme suggestion mentioned.  Besides, it's been a long time (a year) since I contibuted just one object to a month's theme.

Edit: ok, so I did one thing for the "rogue stuff" theme in January, but that shell game was a pain in the posterior to script and animate. :P
