I've read so much conflicting info about these weapons over the last couple of weeks that my head spins. Bows are broken, no the're not, they're WAD that's why there was no fix in 1.02 as there was for daggers. X-bows should have damage increase as dex increases, no they're not supposed to, they were designed for low dex warriors.
The hotfix was created to to fix bows because they were broken, no , it was created to show what should have been for bows.
What I would love to know is how do bows really scale. Daggers are .50 dex and .50 strength so how about bows?  I'm not going to use the hotfix. I want to play an archer type and want to know how to set up the stats for a long bow or short bow.
I have never used a X-bow because they never increase damage as you add dex or strength, am I missing anything?
Thanks for your help.

I'd like to know this too. I love using a bow, however it seems even with high dex and high cunning, I miss like 3 or 4 times on one enemy? Also, I just wanted to know what skill points should I be locking in for archery to get the most out of my bow?

I use Falon'Din's Reach.

As for daggers, I use The Rose's Thorn along with my war axe, Veshialle.

But I'd like to make a pure archer type and I'm not sure what's going on with the bows.

So I'm glad someone posted this question.

I'll try one more time moving this to page 1 hoping for an answer. If no responders this time I'll let this post fade into oblivion.

I'm sorry but I do not know the answer.

Sadly, all the needless whining threads that clutter up the thread lists, means that threads like this one get overlooked and questions unanswered. The whining threads are becoming a real bad epidemic on these forums, it's a real shame. These forums used to be such a great source of information and advice.

From what I understand, it works thusly:

Longbows: Gain 0.5 damage per Str/Dex, gain 0.5 attack per Str/Dex
Shortbows: Gain 0.5 damage per Str/Dex, gain 0.5 attack per Str/Dex
XBows: Gain no damage per Str, but 1.0 damage per Dex, gain 0.5 attack per Str/Dex

The Rogue Lethality talent allows Rogues to use Cunning for additional damage/attack, instead of Strength (if their Cunning is higher).

Various weapons require different amounts Dex in order to equip. Longbows tend to require more Dex to equip than Shortbows and Crossbows.

Relatively speaking, Shortbows tend to have the shortest range, the fastest reload time, but lowest damage and armor penetration. Longbows have a longer range, more damage and armor penetration than a shortbow, but a longer reload time. Crossbows have the longest range, highest damage, highest armour penetration, but a very slow reload time.

So, really, there's no weapon that's particularly limiting to one class/spec. They can all use them effectively, its more a matter of finding the right tool for the job, or just using the one that outputs the most DPS.

Lets try to kep things clear and concise without putting forth personal opinions.

-Bows are not 'broken', they work as coded and as described on offical sites.

-Crossbows should have a damage increase based on dexterity.

-There is an unoffical hotfix that changes the way bows operate in order to make them a more viable and balanced weapon.  It does so by chaning the original code, not by fixing a mistake.   There are indications that changes from this hotfix will eventually be applied to the game.   The existance of this hotfix has lead to a lot of misconceptions about the code for bows being 'broken' in the same way the code for daggers was.

This link describes accurately the way that bows currently function.
