You really need the 200% so pack only pistol with mele mod i prefer carnifex, can do decent dmg ranged when mele is too tight. i also sacrified the last bar in battle master to have 3 pts in carnage, best respec i ever done.
The key i think is not to be too Charge and mele happy, i generally save the charge for when im low on shield. Stay with your group, save their asses from mobs getting too close, you probably wont be spear heading anything exept from the ocationally Geth Prime Tanking. Thats how i play it anyways, works well, i never die, and the we get all the way every time.

Edit: OHH and rememer: if you go vanguard ALWAYS be the host.

Charge: Area, weapon damage, barrier
Barrier: Damage reduction, power synergy, power recharge
Battlemaster: Damage & capacity, power damage, shotgun weight
Rage: All into health/shields
Carnage: Skip

Keep barrier up at all times. Use cyclonic modulator III. Equip the GPS or the Graal. Charge, shoot things, charge, shoot things. Repeat as necessary. Don't try to melee unless it's an absolute emergency. It's too hard to keep rage up during gold, and the Kroguard has rage bugs anyway.

You won't be invincible, but you'll be extremely durable. Yes, even on gold. Don't let too many things shoot you at the same time. Don't say in line of sight of turrets/ravagers unless you're taking them out.

Learn which enemies can instakill, and when they can perform those moves. See this thread for details. I'm not sure about the banshee one, but everything else seems accurate:

It's a good, dependable, gold-capable build. Some people will urge you to take carnage or melee buffs instead. Up to you. I don't like weakening the Kroguards primary strength (tanking independent from invincibility frames) in exchange for an auxiliary skill.

i went 6/0/6/6/6

carnage is a great poke. go with shotgun weight redux and pick up a graal X.

I max charge, barrier, and both passives. Rather than get capacity, I run weapon damage. Weapon damage on charge too. Rock a GPS or a graal, rely on charge/shotty, and you're going to do rather well. Krogan are durable enough to survive fairly well, even with 100%ish recharge.

just rocked gold, geth, white. 1st time play through.

All melee damage, rage for all shield, charge for max recharge/low cools, 2 kill to get rage

max barrier with protections, keep it on at all times.

Your goal is to find stragglers, get rage up, once rage up, you can pretty much melee almost everything and use charge to recharge shield. avoid more than 1 pyro together, they are wat kills you. don't be afraid to charge and retreat if necessary, you have plenty of hp and defense with rage to take alot of hits once max shield.

lightest shotgun with melee bonus damage. probably coulda went pistol and melee bonus too, but i didn't need charge faster than what i had.

Don't be reckless.
Don't charge into crowds willy-nilly. You'll be reduced to shark food in an instant.
Don't be too melee-centric, you have a gun for a reason.
Don't melee enemies with insta-kills. You'll probably die.
Don't rely on the Rage bonus to improve your defenses, it's bugged and even if it worked, it'll only grow into a bad habit.

Do pair up with a biotic class, if at all possible, and especially if they are Asari Justicars or Drell Adepts.
Do understand that sometimes you have to retreat.
Do use weapons that deal damage in large bursts. If you have no idea how a weapon performs, test it outside of Gold.
Do charge. Just do it smartly.

Neither melee or defensive bonuses from rage work for krogan vanguard, only thing rage gives when playing KV, is graphic effect that makes it harder to see things, nothing else.

Rank 5 Martial Artist, increase melee damage by 75% for 30 seconds after an opponent is killed by a heavy melee, apparently works though.

Someone already mentioned a weapons-centric build so that's covered, but this one is for when you just wanna punch something(the only things you need to worry about with this build are banshees, brutes and phantoms. Atlas are cake, just don't stand near them too long. Anywho, build time:

6/0/6/6/6

Charge: Radius, Melee Synergy, Barrier.
Carnage: Nothing.
Barrier: Barrier Srength, Power Synergy, Barrier Strength.
Krogan Battlemaster: Damage & Capacity, Power Damage, Weapon Damage.
Rage: Durability, Martial Artist, Fitness expert.

Try to have 200% cooldown, so use a heavy pistol with a melee damage mod(the other mod's your choice). I use a Scimitar X though since it gives me 200%. With this build and a Cyclonic Modulator(II or II recommended), you can safely get into the fray and melee every enemy type(except banshees, brutes and phantoms, from most to least dangerous...still not recommended to be in melee for long against any of those three).

Always host if you're going to be a Vanguard. Also, if you ever find yourself needing to charge, shoot the enemy you're about to charge to briefly lock onto him/her/it to ensure the charge will go off(also works with heavy melee and cloaking enemies such as geth hunters and phantoms). You can use a combo of melee and heavy melee, or shoot, heavy melee, shoot, heavy melee, repeat. Charge when necessary.

This build is strongest against geth since geth don't have any enemies that can insta-kill(it's still pretty strong vs. cerberus...but not so much against reapers since banshees and brutes tend to HATE melee range. Anywho, if you're fighting geth and see 2 primes, 4 pyros, 3 geth hunters, 2 rockeeters or any other combo of them all together in a big clump, feel free to charge right in there and bash their faces in. With this build and cyclonic modulator(II or III), you WILL NOT die, ever. I do it all the time vs. geth(not firebase white, just random/geth/gold). Although I have used this build on other enemy types as well, I've found geth and cerberus to be the best use of it.

The krogan is a very easy character: you get the biggest gun you can find and shoot it. Melee in between shots. Build doesn't seem to influence this a lot...
