Sorry if this has already been posted or discussed, but I noticed something interesting that Mordin said that I was kind of surprised didn't cause a bit of a stir, especially seeing as how there's so many parents groups and other organizations heavily monitoring video games today.

It was during a conversation with Mordin on the Normandy after you retrieved Eve from Sur'kesh.  When Shepard hears Mordin call her that name, he says, "Eve?"  To which Mordin replies that since they were on a human vessel, he felt it was appropriate to give her a name from human mythology.  So in other words, he explicitly refers to Judaism, Christianity and Islam as mythologies, since Eve is a prominent figure in all three religions.

Now, I don't have any problems with that, personally.  And I'm not here to discuss whether you believe it is a mythology or not since that will only get this thread locked, but this is the first time in the trilogy I've heard religion specifically called that.  And there was no controversy.

By the way, to keep this thread from devolving into a political or religious debate, it should be mentioned that various characters refer to all the different races in the galaxy as having their own myths.  So what Mordin said was totally in keeping with that.  But I was just curious that this didn't cause controversy.

Anyone else notice what Mordin said and kind of pause?

There are more pressing matters for table flipping than this.

It's said in the ME1 codex that abrahamic religions collapsed after the discovery of other species, because they were unable to explain their existence

Because if people caused a stir everytime an Adam and Eve analogy appeared in media the complaints would never stop.

You do know many Christians regard Adam and Eve and other the stories of the Old Testament as mythology don't you?

I don't think it really matters. Mythology seems to be used there as a neutral term just referring to the stories, as opposed to the more loaded 'religion' term. I didn't think there was much of a controversy over naming the geth Legion in ME2, even if that was explicitly from a biblical reference (I think?).

Exactly what is the problem with referring to mythology as mythology..?

It's overall another part of ME3 that made no sense compared to the prior two games.

I didn't actually know/remember this, but I do remember how Ashley's theism was sort of a novelty in ME1; the way she talked about it, she was at the very least implying that it was uncommon.

Thought it was a nice touch. If you're looking at a culture's religions from the outside, they're all just myths and fairy tales. Plus, Mordin is the very model of a scientist Salarian, so you would expect him to take a rational approach to the subject of religion.

Nothing.  But you know how so many groups out there will pounce on things like this in video games.

She believes in God and an afterlife. Not the same thing.

The Abrahamic religions "scrambled to explain" does not equal "collapsed"

They are still around, in a greatly diminished role. As it has been pointed out, both Ashley and (dependant on choice) Commander Shepard can be Christians or at the minimal Diests.

Getting too political here, need to stay neutral and whatnot to comply with forum rules. :D

Because many modern christians (or other religions) see things like Adam and Eve as mythology and accept something like evolution as a fact - but still believe in god creating the universe. Like when scientists theorise about the big bang, christians would say it was caused by god and so on.

I don't believe Ashley claimed to be a Christian, she was a Deist.  Don't believe she ever mentions Christ.

Attempting to defend the Old Testament as historical fact is like running around a nuclear bomb and smashing it with a hammer.
It's opening a huge can of worms that few are ready to deal with, so they don't.

Well he is an alien. Alien religion is probably considered myth by most people. Other than that they let Shepard come back from the dead in a project called Lazerus. Which, if anything, should have upset Christians. Because he plays Jesus basically. And he kind of disproves religion. Because restoring dead people to life kind of goes agains religious beliefs, no? Because if you die, according to religion, there is two things that could happen. You get your pair of wings or horns. But obviously Shepard stayed where he/she was, despite death.

Or just think about the "do Geth have a soul" thing. Slightly insulting if machines made by organics have souls, no? So basically alot of statements against religion and don't even get me started with DA2 and what they do with the Chantry. I am surprised we have not read about crowds of people with torches and pitchforkes sieging Bioware HQ yet. Maybe because they are located in Canada.

Legion got his name from the bible, that didn't cause a stir either (or I don't remember it).
Personally, I think it's because it wasn't a human that gave either of them their names

But why not Lucy? Dr. Leakey referred to what he thought was the first hominid female as "Lucy." Why Eve? or would Lucy have gone over everyone's head?
