As a Christian, I believe the soul is immortal and departs for "judgement" myself.

Those who want to be close to God will be, those who do not won't be. I'm not sure I believe in hell though, that seems to be more of a concoction to keep people in line.

As an atheist, I don't think about my after-life.

I did spend a lot of time reading about ghosts, near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, reincarnation, the concept of heaven and hell, parallel dimensions... Once, I even came up with the idea that we're an energy-based alien species that use any type of biological form to gain experience and move to the next, climbing up the ladder of evolution and jumping from a galaxy to another, sort of "reaping life-points" to grow and progress.

But the truth for me is that these things will matter once I've given my last breath. For now, I'm far more focused on the living.

Edit:
DiebytheSword, don't reply to this because I am in no way trying to antagonize your post, I just felt like writing my opinion in parallel to yours.

When you die, you ascend to a higher plane of existence. Arriving there, you are greeted by a great spirit, this spirit usually has the form of a child. The child then has a conversation with you, explaining the possibilities for your future and in the end you are given the option to go to heaven, hell, or return to Earth. Each of these options is represented by a pillar of light: blue, red and green.

Nothing. Heaven and hell are just fictional locations.

I honestly believe it must of been created by the mentally insane, they did believe in witches and sorcery after all back then so it must be all superstitious crap.

Just completely illogical.

You assume that I plan on assaulting your chosen values and beliefs, I assure you I am not that kind of Christian.  I didn't take your post as antagonization, rather just what it was: statement of belief.

Rather, I would like to discuss some, and not challenge what you've written.

I think its rather wise that you focus on this life, and not a possibility of a next.  I tend to not think of a coming reward when I behave inside of my morals.  I think along the lines that being nice and trying to see things from others' point of view makes for a better world regardless of belief or dogma.

Interesting that you should mention the soul as alien, I've toodled with the idea that by his very definition as a non-human intelligence, God is an alien, in a manner of speaking of course.

I've been raised to always question everything, even the Church I was made to attend.  I'm a bit of an odd duck as a Christian because of it.  I do not accept dogma, I challenge it at every turn, and I'm satisfied that I'll probably die not knowing any of the answers for certain.

Actually no, i just can not think that way, i really can not wrap my head on how it works and on how people would believe in it.

I am a science person and i believe that everything can be answered logically.

I'm not a hater of religion. I don't care what you believe in, who you are, age, sex, nationality what ever.

It is just...strange. Not in a bad way, i can't explain it, perhaps you got to be a believer to understand, i doubt i would ever know the answer to it.

Like i said, i prefer to stick with science.

We live, we love, we die. I don't think about it, what we do now matters not after, so just enjoy life.

DieByTheSword is happy with not knowing all the answers, i want to know the answers, i want to know how this all works, get the answers/keys to the universe.

If i could gain all that knowledge, i would do anything to obtain it.

So much knowledge and so much to learn and it is a sad fact i will die not knowing even half the answers.

No, both are important, infact the future is more important. The actions you do and the consequences of your actions all need to be considered and analysed.

Scrutinize your own belief.

Because all that stuff...mentally insane people don't create it.

I believe you on that right.

I don't believe however you took a logical position on why people believe the way they are. Of course, afterlife mythologies are created by fancy narratives. They were never scientific explanations of the universe, and you wonder why people still continue to hold onto those beliefs despite our modern understanding of cosmology? There is a understandable context to those beliefs, built on something general as tradition and culture spanning thousands of years down to the individual experience. Maybe, just maybe, I'm saying to be open-minded about it. That is an unfair statement.

I am open minded, but i still don't understand how people can believe in religion, like i said, perhaps i am not a believe and i will never know or why on how it works and what makes people believe in religion.

Don't people see how far technology could take us? If mind uploading was real, we would become invincible, with genetics we can create life, destroy life and modify life for the better, with technology we can visit the stars and make it ours.

I would go into more detail but if i actually gave my opinion, i would come of as extremely cynical and possibly hateful.

Science and technology advancements have shown that anyone can play 'god'. I am more inclined to believe this 'god' is possibly of extra-terrestrial origin, thats if we were created.

I don't mean to sound nasty or hateful but people who are religious to the bone prevent us from this, ethics would come in, the playing god arguement would be used.

But religion and morality can prevent us from becoming monsters. I guess.

As an atheist, I believe that when we die that's it. There is no Heaven or Hell. Our consciousness stops existing.

Which is why lots of people choose to believe in absurdities.

I'm not the most religious or even spiritual person around. But I think I prefer to think that there is something after life. A place where our souls go to rest, or something similar to that. If believing in that is an absurdity then I couldn't care less.

Seriously though, I don't believe anything unusual happens. You're dead. But at least you will never be rickrolled again.
