Whoever says he is horrible isn't leveling him up right. He is insanely lethal.

Some people say he's horrible usually because he shows up a little late during the game, and by then those people already got attached to Leliana, who's also a rogue but that we can 'build' since the start of the game. If respecced and properly equipped he's a beast. And that accent... *swoons* <3

Also (at least with me) his starting equipment was really bad >.<

If you don't manage your companion like I don't he isn't as good and doesn't back stab and isn't as surviable as a warrior. Maybe I'm playing rogues wrong though. Well If you have the power that lets him back stab stunned opponents from the front he'd be okay.

Well, for one thing, I got no interest in romancing him, but that's not mutual.

I use him all the time. He's deadly and much funnier than Leliana.

I use him 100% of the time. I also romanced him too though. But I'm a rogue and so is he. We got each other's backs.

Also remember to give him gifts, namely the Antivan boots. or in the words of Union 13's Rancid cover" "tiene la bota" (raices radicales!!)

I agree. I was having more problems with Alistair and Sten getting knocked out until they got to higher levels.

Nothings wrong with Zevran except to some he seems a bit skeezy. Respec mods are a must. He's the funniest character with the best banter in the game.

Translation, nothing is wrong once I undo what was programmed and change him to fit my needs.

However for those of us that have consoles and not PCs we must adapt to what we are given.  Zevran is great if you have another rogue to handle lockpicking and traps.  That allows him to handle his assassin business without costing anything.

If you run with him as your do all rogue, he takes a careful hand to mold correctly.

What?! Who says something like that about poor Zev? I, personally, consider him to be one of the most useful companions in the game. He's very effective once you show him some love. The only thing I'm not awfully happy about is that he comes with no lockpicking skills and relatively low cunning. Maybe that could be the problem? But you don't get him so late for it to really be that troublesome. I work on it throughout the game and he does fine. Except for that, he's very flexible and deadly if played well. Especially with some strategy in mind. I definitely have more trouble keeping Sten or Oghren conscious. Not Zevran.

As for combat, Zev + rogue talents + poison-making + trap-making = win! My human noble warrior wouldn't have it any other way.

Moreover, Zevran is a really amusing companion if you give him a chance. It's true I didn't like him much at first and kept him out of roleplay and convenience. Since then, however, he's really grown on me. He's an interesting character and his lines are hilarious. I think he just doesn't exactly make a good impression at the beginning. The fact you can actually kill him (which is a logical choice after all) or let him go doesn't help much either, I guess.

It's not his personality I have a problem with. But as you just said, you get him relatively late with a lot of points locked into place. If you don't use a respec mod, it takes ages before he has any utility worth mentioning. Unless I am playing a rogue myself and one that focuses on cunning specifically, I want a lockpicker. Zev just isn't one until very late in the game.

Furthermore, he isn't exactly amazing in combat unless specifically managed to run around and backstab all the time. He isn't actually bad if properly geared.

Zev's problem is that Leliana is a better lockpicker from the start and you already have her. For everything else, most other characters tend to be more useful.

I agree, he has funniest comments during battles,
my favorite is when some annoying enemy was knocked down,
Zevran starts laughing and backstabbing him "aha! now fun part hahaha" xD

Also he is very useful to kill mages,
I would made him a bard with all songs

Posted Image  I think this pretty much explains my only annoyance about him, besides that I always have that snarky elf in my party only after I mastered his lockpicking abilities.

@Pizza - love that comic! :D

I adore Zev (and this from someone who didn't even understand he was recruitable the first time I played DAO...heh!). Since my favorite is to play as a rogue myself, I take over lockpicking and bard duties, and I build Zev to be a damage dealer (I give him Duelist to go with his Assassin tree). It is actually quite fun playing with an all melee team (my cunning DW daggers rogue, Zev, Alistair and Shale; seriously fun banter, and if I position them well, damn quick at taking down baddies...weeeee!). My last play through with a Mage Warden worked out fine as well, since I had Zev and Leliana both in my party. Again, didn't have to worry about lock picking since Leliana was with us, and I could focus Zev on damage.

Zevran bad? My warden loves her bad boy! I agree with everyone, he's lethal if leveled properly. And that accent...and those ears...

DW Rogues require a lot of micro to work effectively, and if you can't afford the equipment to make Zevran good, he will always be kind of a let down. Like sure, cunning rogues do massive amounts of damage, but only when you're controlling them.

Like Zevran, bless his pervy heart, blows all his stun talents at once then tries to auto enemy mobs.

I mean to make him good, you have to find all the paralyze runes you can, get a bunch of rogue equip, and THEN felon's coat, and maybe he'll be as useful as you want him to be.

I mean I like playing a cunning rogue, but for all the micro it takes, I'd rather just make my own, you know? And not have to deal with his bad talents.

Rather just use Sten or Ohgren. There is a lot more good free massive armor sets and 2h weapons than Light armor. Plus he's just less fragile. Zevran on nightmare just drains your Injury kits because his defense isn't high enough to dodge tank until late game with good equip.

I mean, the great thing about leliana, is that she doesn't have to risk getting hit to attack, doesn't draw alot of threat early in the game, and has a great party buff to start.  What's not to like? She doesn't do huge amounts of damage, but does consitent good damage, and bard is just like the greatest spec ever.

That picture is brilliant =] I personally used the character respecialisation mod on him. I highly recommend it, but I'd be a bit wary of using it in Awakening. I think it messed my 'bonus' attribute points up once there.

I don't pick/spec rogues with combat as my primary concern, so that's why I usually keep Leiliana in the party... if I'm not playing a rogue of course. The only time I use Zevran is if I'm playing Slim Couldry's last burglary quest as a rogue: him, Leiliana, and the Warden. Not a complete line-up, but nobody in it can't sneak.

Of course, it helps that Leiliana's my favorite romance option.

Currently I'm playing a high dex tank, and using zev as dps. He outdamages me and after completing three main quest lines have only one injury.
In my opinion, when you keep aggro off zev, he's a beast, a very fast & nimble beast; and if he's dying a lot, may be the tank is to blame.

This never made sense to me. A rouge assassin that can't pick locks? Posted Image
