I find Zevran to be incredibly lethal and effective. Even without super high-end gear like Felon's Coat and Rose's Thorn he can outdamage any other companion in most situations. And he has great lines. The lack of lockpicking is a problem if you're going to run him instead of Leliana, but can be remedied by feeding him talent tomes if necessary (an easier choice if the PC is a mage and thus doesn't need them). But you can certainly run both Zev and Leliana if you have a good tank and a little crowd control. I've been running tank Warden, Zev, Lel, and Wynne for most of this playthrough and it's been very smooth so far.
I do agree that Zev likes to be directly controlled, though. Most of my fights consist of a little setup, a couple CC spells from the mage, and then Zev running around killing everything. If I were playing a Warden that needed a lot of micro, I might not want to deal with Zevran at the same time.
whats so bad about zevran in dragon age origins?

Zev is the best, he is funny ,and if you know how to develop his skills right he becomes really great . the lock picking is a bit of a problem but it's not such a big deal ,you can just use leliana for lock picking , I just take a second run on a part that i already went through with leliana only to pick locks.

How do you get an NPC to use a talent tome? I tried giving Morrigan an extra spell but it didn't work the way it would for my Warden mage and perhaps prematurely I concluded NPC's can't benefit from tomes?

You use it like a gift, you go to their inventory screen and right click use. I buy all the mage tomes and give them to Morrigan or Wynne if I am not a mage and they work just fine.
As for Zevran, on the PC download Advanced Tactics mod (Nexus), it gets the rogues to flank enemies for backstabs, you can turn it off if you made them an archer. This makes Zevran much more lethal and Leliana a way harder decision on whether to archer or dual wield her.

Hilarious comic on pg 1.
XD
Anyway, Zev is great, only squad mate that understands 'Team Spirit'!! Though it is annoying that he comes really late in the game, like after missions I wanted to take him on, that and he has no, no, NO lockpicking skills when first met. Full up on his poisons, but no lockpicking. Meaning he's useless for it till later and you still need to drag Leli around with him in the squad till he levels up enough.
