Yup, hair - as in styles.
What I would really like to see in future games (not just Bioware games, but since we're here okay Bioware games first) is some better hair styling. I'm re-playing DAO and... well half the hairstyles look like helmets and the other half are pinned back and between the two are the following problems: unrealistic braid length compared to hair length, overly elaborate design of braids for someone who's going to spend most of their time in battle, and TERRIBLE bangs that are ridiculously think.
Perhaps this can be fixed? I would suggest, for future hairstyles - forms of french braiding (most) and pinned up/clipped up styles with some left messy on the hang. One is very tight and orderly looking, the other a bit more messy and stylish.
Any other suggestions?

I can't say I dislike the hair styles in both games. I prefer the ones in DA2 though.
Personally even if there were long hair options I'd expect them to be tied back. Is it realistic to expect someone who's constantly going into battle would have hair flying around their face? lol...

Aren't most of the hairstyles covered by head gear? Perhaps they should consult a hairdresser for the next installment. I agree, some of the hairstyles do look outlandish, but this is really a frivolous pursuit. As opposed to the myriad problems bediviling the DA series.

There's an option to hide your helmet in DA2. Also, unless you're playing the harder modes in DAO, wearing a helm isn't really necessary.Vincent Laww wrote...

My objections to the hair is most of the styles are really just the same basic style with different strands over the eyes. One version has a strand covering the left eye. The next has a strand covering the left and right eye, etc. Fewer styles that are more distinct would be easier to chose from.
One hair selection I do not see is Minoan as seen in old Minoan murals. From old paintings it was very popular among men and women in Minoan and Helenic times. Spartan hoplites were known for having very long hair and beards in this style. The closest I have seen to this style is the hair on some dwarf NPCs.
OTOH there are very few distinct styles for the eyebrows and they all tend to be small. Even the men look like they pluck their eyebrows. There are also fewer color variations for the eyebrows so it is hard to get hair and eyebrow colors to match up. They should use the same colors as the hair and beard as it is rare for the people to have different colors for eyebrow hair.
The beard selections for the men in DA2 is fairly comprehensive. If you look at historical portraits of western officers from the 18th and 19th century, you see all their beard styles in DA2.

Please put Morrigan and default femHawke's hair in the CC, Bioware. I don't know why Morrigan's hair turns up on random NPCs but you can't put it on your character.
There were also faux-hawk thingies for elves, so maybe that sort of thing could return? Like this -

I didn't like the long hair in DA:O because it seemed to stand out from the head in an unnatural way. I liked the female hair styles better in DA2, like in my avatar. It was long but tied back and actually moved when she walked. That movement was a step up, imo. They still haven't got the all black hair right though, it either looks black in some lights, and brown in others, eg. Isabella's hair, or like Merrill's hair which looks sooty, no shine at all. Still they were all better than Origins hair styles for females.

Speaking as a 3d animation and arts student... hair systems take a lot of render time and power and can be complicated to work (there's a slew of people that make their living JUST by developing and managing hair systems). In movies, this is okay because you render it only once for the final version; games have to re-render every second. So what we get in games is frequently not so complex (and thus "less realistic") because it's more important to get proper facial feature movements and proper arm and leg movements than the flow of hair. Plus clipping issues with long hair (and cloaks). Mid-length cuts would be the longest that look good without causing other problems.

They all go to the same hairdresser? Or their hairdressers work out of the same style book?
In real life you see many women with the same hair style so it is actually rather realistic if Morrigan and the femPC have the same hair style. DAO had an interesting dialogue between Leliana and Morrigan on Morrigan's lack of fashion sense. One between Morrigan and Isabella should be very amusing.

Admittedly, it is frivolous. Still, I really feel like the hairsyle makes a big differnece on my visual expression of my character and I see it A LOT so it does have an impact on play for me overall. Not as much as say, reused maps and glitchy quests sure, but still a big deal as far as how you feel while re-playing especially when you're trying to make a "new" character doing different things that looks VERY similar to your last character only because you hate most of the choices for looks.

I'd prefer if they made hair that could change to fit the character's head, I hate seeing characters' bald heads underneath the hair. If it could be made to fit the head procedurally maybe some styles could be made open to both genders too, which could be fun...
If my next female character doesn't have the bowl-cut-with-a-big-bald-patch-like-a-monk hair I'll be disappointed.
Otherwise, yes, more would be nice, I might even say the longer female styles from origins should be reworked altogether with the way they seem repulsed from the neck, which is a bit bizarre. And please don't make the default character's hair unavailable in the character creator next time, if that's to be the iconic protagonist's style let my protagonist use it.

Most of the base hair style options in Dragon Age are ugly. I'm not a fan of short hair on females outside or inside a game (sorry). I only was able to find one hairstyle that was tasteful.
More long hair options would be welcome. They should also introduce the ability to apply a base color and a high light color.
Beyond that they need to dump the color slider and bring in a color pallet. I hate being limited to only certain colors especially for makeup.

Why is it that hardly any games seem to get hair right?? A lot of the time it'll be the most defining trait in characters, and I don't know about everyone else, but I believe they should have more hair styles than any other option (perhaps excluding colour, but even in this we don't get that many options.) I mean, if the modding community can do it, why can't they???

That's the crux of it right there for me. I'm on PS3 (will be getting PC one day...) to play and I oogle what the mod community can do with so many things - but the stuff they do for appearances seems like it wouldn't be too too expensive/hard to get in the basic games. And you're totally right, hair is the most visible constant about a character - sure eye color choices are nice, but how often do you really get to appreciate them staring at the back of your character's head running about? Not bloody often.

Longer hair sure, but also nicer updos. The added styles in DA2 were a great improvement, and I remember getting so excited seeing Flemeth's hair move in a trailer.
