Ok. I have had the game for almost a month now and with five characters the farthest I have gotten is approximately 28% of the world explored. I have had total game freezes, graphical slow downs, long load times, system freezes, and memory leaks not all at the same time but at some point or another. I have tried alot of the various ideas posted on the forums as well as opening a ticket with EA (19 days and counting with no reply) to try to get some support. Here is the stage I am at now:

System: AMD Quad Core 9600, 2 GB Ram, 2 ATI Radeon 3870 vid cards, windows vista home premium, and ATI Catalyst 9-11 drivers.

I have been using the TLB disable idea mentioned on these forums although I have also tried the game without disabling. I am currently starting up the Dragon Age updater every time before I start the game. I have tried every combination of quad core affinity settings that are possible and with all of these things these are the issues that I cannot seem to fix.

1. When the Zevram the Assassin and the assassin hired to kill Leilana sequences begin I am able to finish both of the fights with no problem whatsoever but when it comes time to talk to Zev. and the other assassin after the battles my graphics begin to slow down and it happens so fast that I am simply unable to get through the entire conversations before I am left with a frozen image on the screen. I have tried using the esc key to get through the dialogue as fast as possible but I can ever get all the way through before the game freezes up. Again, I have tried every combination of the fixes I mentioned in the beginning with no success and I am stuck. None of my five characters can get beyond either the Zev fight or the Leilana Assassin fight. I have tried doing quests in different order just to get around this but nothing has worked. With this problem I can alt-tab out and shut the game down and try again but I can never get by either one of these points.

2. One of my characters avoided going to Redcliffe in the begining and instead went to the Brecilian forest and got the werewolf quest but I am simply unable to complete this stage because I am getting complete graphical freezes that eventually result in me having to restart my whole computer. This problem is unlike #1 above as this problem causes either a total system reboot on its own or I have to initiate a reboot on my own. The screen turns to millions of different colors and freezes that way. I cannot move very around in the forest before this happens.

These two problems are currently the main ones that are not allowing me to progress any of my five characters beyond one of the points listed above. All of five of them are in one stage or another that needs to go through the sequences above.

Thanks go out to any who read this and attempt to help me. I know that game companies cannot test games on every type of setup but the AMD Quad Core and ATI 3870 combo seems to be such a common setup that I find it hard to believe that they would not test the game on a system similar to mine. Anyway, any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I am so frustrated and angry at this point that if I knew how to get my money back I would simply take that route but alas here I am.

P.S. I also have memory leak issues that occur quite randomly. I can sometimes play for as much as 4-6 hours before I start getting long load times and other times I cannot play more than 10 or 15 minutes before I have to restart the game. I can live with this issue because it is an easy fix but it is still a problem nonetheless.

BTW, I have not installed the 1.02 patch yet as I see it seems to have its fair share of unique problems too. I am still on 1.01b

Don't know if this will help but sometimes graphic drivers can cause game conflicts. When playing ME I had way too many game crashes and freezes for it to be bugs. After searching the forums I found out it was happening to those that upgraded to the latest nVidia drivers. And after more research I found the recommended video card driver. Try looking for info on your video card to see if its causing any conflicts

I have already upgraded to the latest drivers. I forgot to mention that in my original post. I started out with the 9-6 drivers for my cards and I switched to the latest 9-11 drivers about 16 days ago. Thanks for the post and I know it still might be the video drivers but if it is I am not sure what version to try.

UPDATE: It seems now that ANY drawn out video sequence causes the quick graphical slowdown and eventual freeze. This can take as long as 2-5 minutes to happen or it can immediately as a video sequence begins. I just found this out after having killed the Sloth Demon in the Raw Fade and having it freeze up after the battle. Essentially now I cannot do anything with any of my characters as they are all at a point where the next thing they complete will initiate a video sequence and it will freeze up. Please someone help me.

Since you've researched so much this forums, maybe you already know this solution. Anyway, are you familiar with ATI overheating problem? Have you tried to downclock your GPU from the Catalyst Control Center (and maybe to up the fans' speed)?

you didnt mention your temperatues.

probably half of computer crashes are simply overheating.

I have been using the CPUID monitor ever since I installed the game and my temperatures are all quite low considering. ATI card one runs at about 84-87 degrees and card 2 runs at about 91-95. Neither one rarely gets muc higher than that. The 4 cpus run anywhere from 98-115 depending upon how the affinity is currently setup and the HD that has the game on it runs at about 89 and never gets above 100.. According to everything I have researched online those temperatures are well below anything that is considered hot. I have 3 system fans, the cpu fan, a fan on each ATI card as well as liquid cooling running in this thing so I really doubt it is a temperature issue.

Come on! There are no tech gurus out there that want to take a shot at this and prove themselves?

I'm not the biggest tech geek but have you tried making a new character? I mean, all of a sudden you're experiencing these slow-downs "It seems now that ANY drawn out video sequence causes the quick graphical slowdown and eventual freeze." I find it hard to believe that it is a gamebug. If you haven't done so already, make a new character, see if it happens in the early video sequences which you have seen correctly before. If they too slow down, you know it's due to a change in your drivers/patches/newly installed software. At least you then know where to look. Downgrade your video driver if you think it might have happened after that, or reinstall the game without the patch. That's all I can come up with to help. Hope it works out for you, this is a great game, if it works, and I should know, cause I had my share of problems with it too.

Drivercleaner http://downloads.gur...wnload-745.html

Uninstall your graphics drivers with that then reinstall. Corruptions of registry entries could be part of your problem.

Looking at some other things...it is entirely possible that the Crossfire solution doesn't support Dragon age at all yet.

If that is the case (check your readme on the drivers) Turn off the crossfire bit and use a single card..

Can you describe this part a little more for me? Does your computer bluescreen after this? Are you seeing artificats? Or is slow FPS drops to the point your game BLACKS out or the picture freezes etc?

I use Nvidia myself but:

Seems plausible as well.

Can't believe no one has mentioned this to you yet but:

Despite alos having issues myself with various things, you have no where near enough ram mate. Vista on its own can use up to a GB just doing nothing, thus leaving you with 1GB to play the game....no way mate.

Up your ram right now, bet you be amazed at the number of things that are resolved right away :)

1. the TLB issues as you've mentioned

2. 3870 isn't the happiest video card with dragon age. especially when its in crossfire.

3. you have no ram.

4. probably have heat issues if you are getting artifacts.

geertmans, I currently have five characters all at various stages and they all have this problem. I have determined that it only happens after boss or cut scene fights. The sloth demon tower fight, zevram's assassination attempt, the honnelith fight, the assassaination attempt of leilana, and all other events like that. This is when it is happening.

Lughsan35, how do I turn off crossfire. I am fairly adept at computer things but I am not sure how to do this. I used the driver cleaner and reinstalled the 9-11 drivers but that did no good.

SharpneI, no black or blue screens during this episodes. When the video starts it starts normally but as it continues it just slows down and it happens fairly quickly. Usually too fast for me to get get through the entire video and talk to the npc. Eventually it is going so slow that it looks like a complete freeze. I can alt tab out and shut the game down and then restart it but it just happens when try again.

Maviarab, I am planning on doing that when I have the extra cash but I am just trying to make do for now. I have come to realize that 2GB is not enough. Kind of between a rock and a hard place on this issue right now though.

Valaskjalf, the TLB issues as I have mentioned what? What are you trying to say about this point? Well I paid for the two cards at a fairly hefty price a year or so ago so I can't really afford to just switch to two different cards and if I go away from crossfire I would have to change the motherboard too. I am working on fixing the ram issue. Heat is not the issue. CPUID shows that all of my temps are well below the range that is tolerable for everything. I have checked all of these issues out.

It's not that you can't run any other card, most MB that come SLI or Crossfire ready are set up for one or the other.
It's only two linked cards that is restricted to that particular MB.
My Gigabyte MB is set up to run ATI cards linked but not Nvidia cards in SLI.
If I wanted to run a single Nvidia card, then the PCIx slot works like any other.

It's either SLI or Crossfire, I'm not sure if there's any that can do both.

Ok, let me take a shot at this. First thing to try is turning off the Aero feature for Vista if you have it on. It causes crashing problems on some peoples rigs while gaming. Some games are set up to turn it off automatically when the game starts some aren't.

Second thing is to stop all unnecessary services while your playing in case there is a conflict or to free up resources. Click start and then in the search box type msconfig then press enter. Click on the services tab. Scroll to the bottom and check the box marked hide all microsoft products, that is important to do. A lot of the boxes should disappear. Uncheck any of the boxes left with a check beside them. Then click on the start up tab. Uncheck all checked boxes there as well. Hit apply and then ok. Restart your PC.

Third thing, hit start and in the search box type services.msc. On the right should be a list of services, look for one labeled AMD external event utility. Right click on it and then click on properties. Under start up type choose disable and then hit the stop button. Hit apply and then ok.

I hope these steps help you.
