I know it is subjective but I just dont find his music to be all that good. Why not Clint Bajakian (Outlaws is probably the best video game soundtrack of all time) or Chance Thomas (Quest for Glory 5)? That was off the top of my head, others feel free to suggest more.

They should get whoever did the Oblivion soundtrack, I thought that was lovely.

Jeremy Soule who also did the soundtrack for Morrowind and Skyrim.

No way, Inon Zur needs to stay. Even if you don't like his music (and I can't see why anyone shouldn't -- the man is brilliant) he's been the voice of the entire DA soundtrack so far. Changing composers now could be seriously disastrous.

For a second I thought you were recommending Clarence Thomas.

I say Skrillex.

Brush, aside from the main theme could you hum or even recognize a single other tunr/musical cue from DAO or DA2?

Many series have changed composer as they have gone on, it is a matter of who they pick that determines the net change.

Chance Thomas would be an excellent choice.

Inon Zur's music strikes me as background music. It defines almost none of the tone of the game, which I find disappointing. Exceptions are the camp theme, and the main theme.

That's my problem with Inon Zur. In all the games he's done the main theme is literally the only interesting thing on the entire soundtrack, the rest is just generic and forgettable.

Well I own both soundtracks and a few tracks from the Leliana's Song DLC, so that's technically cheating, but my answer's yes. Image IPB

I'm truly sorry that you didn't love the music as much as I did. Mr. Zur admitted publicly that the DAII soundtrack was a "rush job" so that may have had something to do with it.

Seriously, though.  I would like to see something very similar to the Metallica S & M album, which was a live concert they performed with the San Francisco Symphony a few years ago.  (sample) www.youtube.com/watch

A mix of metal and orchestra, would certainly get me to notice the soundtrack in a favorable way, and would definitely make some scenes much more intense.

I loved the Tavern music in DA2! Inon Zur has done a great job, although, the DA2 soundtrack did fall a little flat when compared to DAO.

No thanks.

I've got nothing against metal, but DA has its own sound. It's part of brand identification.

DA2 did contain some forgettable music, but it had its high points, including the Hawke theme and Qunari, and DA:O's music was fantastic. Orzammar and Ostagar themes were totally memorable. One of my favorite audio moments in the game is when you first meet Varric and the Orzammar theme starts in the background.

Inon Zur should come back for DA3, since it's more a continuation of the DA2 storyline (than DA2 was of Origins).

After DA3, I wouldn't be opposed to them considering a new composer. I don't have a problem with the current music, but you'll never know what else is out there if you don't go looking for it.

I'm not terribly impressed by either Chance Thomas or Clint Bajakian. They make music of the right color for whatever purpose, but it never rises, it never carries a wisp, of some soul. Jeremy Soule and Inon Zur are at a different level. (And they are very much alike).
Also what I see here, are some complaints about things (lack of themes) which I strongly suspect is not up to the composer. It's up to the game designers to decide where and how they want to use music.

If it's a matter of budget though, a lesser known composer might offer to do more.

Really? You really think so?
I'm so totally of a different mind. Only thing that might be somewhat true of, would be DA2.

Mind you, I haven't played all Inon Zur's 40 games, but every single track on IWD2, DA:O, Fallout3 is brilliant.

Is there some reason why it's the person that's under criticism and not the music?

I don't know what Zur has or hasn't composed, but I've just gone to his site and (in my opinion) there is some beautiful stuff there. And lots of diversity.

It's just that, maybe what isn't liked about DA2 music - the only thing I think I've gotten from this thread is that it wasn't memorable - might be more of something that's tied to overall design.

I'd have to agree that I didn't think DA2's music wasn't memorable, because I can't hum a single theme off the top of my head. But, in Origins, I can probably only hum the title theme. But music doesn't necessarily have to be memorable. In a cinematic style game, they may have been going for atmospheric - or something.

I liked the soundtrack in DAO/2. They aren't my favourite game soundtracks, but there were quite a few I really loved - like the music for the Hanged Man! Or Calenhad Docks, the party camp, the Corypheus theme, Tallis/MotA theme, Fenris' theme, the track 'Elves At The Mercy Of Men', and when Marethari enters the alienage in DA2.

Hah, expensive! But I certainly wouldn't complain. I love Nobuo Uematsu's music for Lost Odyssey and the older Final Fantasy games.

I believe Inon Zur while very talented, tries too hard to take his music to unexpected "places". 30% of his music is incredible and appropriate, but for the most part, he just "does the job"

I wrote a more in depth analysis last year in a few posts if anyone cares to read :D

Dance of Mystery and Intrigue by Chance Thomas has no soul? You need new ears.

I have to agree that Zur's main themes are good (Fallout, DAO) most of his stuff is just....there.
