Ok, controversial title. I'm bound to upset the majority of the forum with thread, but i don't care, after my 3rd play through of ME3 I need to get this of my chest as it pisses me off just as much as the ending. If you are sensitive about Liara, leave now...
I hate Liara, i have since day 1 of ME1. I've never liked the 'Bond Girl' type characters and the whole vulnerable damsel in distress who fall's for the main protagonist role that Liara plays in ME1. But it's been clear, IMO, That she is Bioware's 'flagship romance' she comes on the strongest of any of the LI's. She is right there in your face about it too.
Shep: "Hey, Liara, it was tough back there on Therum, are you ok?"
Liara: "Shepard, it's so kind of you to look in on me. Do you want to be more than just friends since you obviously care so much?"
Or
Shep: "Hey Liara, hows it hanging?
Liara: "I WANT YOU IN MY MIND PANTS!"
WTF, i've only just met you and you're proclaiming a deep connection and feelings for me? have some respect for yourself woman!.
Exaggeration, sure, but that's practically how it comes off if you're not looking to romance her.
But what pisses me off the most is that she's blatantly BioWare's canon LI. There is sentiment expressed in several places that Liara is who BioWare "wants" you to choose.
Consider:
- Liara is the only squadmate who cannot die at any stage.
- Liara is the only character thus far to have a romance across all 3 games.
- Yes, i know the Genesis comic is terrible, but The LI choice seems stacked in Liara's favour. Liara has a "romantic introduction" but Ashley/Kaidan do not. They introduce Liara is "As intelligent as she is beautiful. "The mindmelds were "different but... not at all unpleasant." WTF! pretty sure I roleplayed the "Gah! WTF was that! I just got brain probed!, gtfo my mind!" option.
- Liara had her own comic and DLC tied directly into the main storyline. (btw BioWare, Learning about the KEY events in a game should not rely on comics and DLC) Even the 'From Ashes' DLC makes her plot essential.
- Liara is essential through out the series. Not just with violating Shepards personal boundaries in ME1 with that whole mindmeld thing, or recovering Shepard's body and becoming the Shadow Broker. But also as a squad member in ME3, I played as a soldier who sacrificed Kadian and didn't initially download the 'From Ashes' DLC. So i was stuck with Liara as the only available Biotic in my squad... seriously BioWare, WTF. Did you even take that into consideration? where's Jack, Samara and Miranda?. Oh, thats right, you gave them all some BS reason not to join my squad. I can't help feel like this was just another one of your schemes to milk more money out of your fans through day 1 DLC.
Moving on, it's not just the fact that BioWare have blatantly been playing favorites with her that pisses me off, but also that she's just a complete and utter douche. After being forced to take her on the Priority Thessia mission, she has a mini mental breakdown after seeing the Reapers on Thessia, and she was so shocked about how it was happening on her home world when Shepard had already seen it on Earth and she had even been there with Garrus to see it happen on Palavin. I mean seriously, how stuck up is she?. Then she proceeds to throw a **** fit at Javik, even though the Prothean beacon the asari had (if they gained knowledge from it as Shepard speculates) should have known the reapers were a real threat...
Finally, Her face appearing in Shepard's final moments, W.T.F BioWare... Jack is my LI, you already sidelined her, turned her into a cameo and gave her some BS reason not to join me on the Normandy. Now you have to deliver yet another slap to the face (in a game full of them) by implying that my Shepard, who's only LI has been Jack, is thinking of Liara in his final moments? I've spent the past 3 games being a dick towards Liara and systematically trying to find ways to kill her. I seriously i hope the IT is true and its just Harbinger trolling me by messing with Shepards head. But i suspect that it's just BioWare saying, 'Awwww, you didn't pick our canon LI? WELL F U!, here's the rest of the crappy ending, cheers for the £100+ you've spent on the ME series lololololololololol, now excuse me, EA need their genitalia caressing.'
I could go on, but i think I've ranted on enough...
So screw your crappy, dull, douche bag canon LI BioWare. I want DLC where Jack Nova Charge's her out of the Airlock.
Let the 'haters gonna hate/troll thread is a troll blah, blah, blah'
comments commence.

Noooo, not again! There's been a million threads with the exact same topic! Why open a new one, there are so many. Plus, Liara is awesome and I won't point out for the 1000th time why.

I love Liara, but I can totally see how someone could feel she was just forced on you.
I think her role is supposed to be Shepard's closest friend.

I don't see it . I stop talking to her since she said we're just good friends, when you are at the shops. You can say I want to me more than friend or something like yep. If you agree that you are just good friend it will not come up anymore . I did it by accident the first time .
The only reason she can not die is that she is not a main character in ME 2.
And so she was the only Biotic, due to your choices with in the game ? And if you did the wrong things you might not have anyone for overload .

Screw that. That spot's reserved for Garrus.

I feel the same way about Leliana in the DA universe.
Liara, on the other hand, I like.

The point is, that she is intended to be a supporting character, which is good thing by the way. You nood at least one such character for a good story to work. The protagonist can't do everything himself and drive the whole story forward on his own. Imagine Liara isn't in the games. Then Shepard would have to be a prothean expert somehow. He would have to somehow magically save himself from death or save his corpse from the Shadow Broker and Blue Suns to beam it to Cerberus and so on. That's why Liara can't die, because you need someone besides your protagonist to drive the story forward. Cut Ashley, James or even Garrus from the game, the story still works, but not without Liara.
About the "forced" thing: For me it was always obvious that Liara falls in love with Shepard, no matter if he/she returns this feeling. So if he/she doesn't, she still would do everything to bring him/her back to life and finally be with her. Or just ends up accepting the fact that the feelings are not returned and just desires to be good friends with Shepard. You also can turn her away and reject her anytime you want.
So now stop complaining about her, poeple.

WoW that is a seemingly unhealthy level of hate...
I personally like her character arc and romance, not for everyone sure, I like how she goes from naive nerdy and socially awkward towards a much more mature person in the following games. But meh to each their own.

To be fair though her reaction to Thessia and the Prothean interference in her peoples history did seem a bit understandable, I imagine I would be a quite upset in similar situations. Also while Shepard and Garrus are soldiers, Liara isn't (Though she has been through as much as either so...), and I wouldn't say they were completely unaffected by the loss of their homeworlds either.
I will agree the whole Liara in the final montage was odd, I assumed that she was there because she had been my Shepards LI but then I found out she was there regardless.
Also without From Ashes the Javik scene shouldn't have existed in your playthrough.

I think most people who didn't romance the VS or Liara were upset by seeing Liara as the default flashback before Shepard died. I saw a screenshot of the ending flashback files, and they only made one for Liara and the VS. How frustrating, especially since you can get the Paramour achievement for all the ME2 romances except Jacob and Thane (also unfair, but another topic).
Tali and Garrus had a huge fan backing, but they forgot to include flashbacks of them? I think it was laziness or an oversight, since Liara and the VS are the only romances you can start in ME3. I feel you. Garrus was my main Shepard's LI
I also have a Liaramance Shepard, but she isn't my favorite LI. She's alright. If you hate her then ME3 must have really sucked for you...
