The codex entry and DA wiki tell us that the Nevarrans are a tough people historically ruled by the Pentaghast clan, who hunted dragons to almost extinction. We also know that they've been at war with Orlais over the location of the neighboring countries' borders, and that it's the location of Cumberland, where the College of Magi meets. The codex also says that the Nevarrans love art and fill their cities with statues, and that instead of burning their dead like most Andrastians, they preserve them in elaborate palace-like tombs. Interesting!

We don't know much more than that, really. At least I don't. I'm not even sure what kind of accent I'd say Cassandra had. German, maybe? Austrian? Maybe not?

The map we previewed from Mr. Laidlaw was an idea, not a promise, but it did include parts of Nevarra for exploration. Would anyone on the DA team be able to tell us some more about Nevarra? Does anyone else have any information I've missed? Any guesses as to what the country and its people are like? What real-life cultures or nations they share similarities with?

I feel like it's the least talked about nation so far in Thedas, and the fact that we may visit there (Cumberland, maybe?) in DAIII makes me really curious.

Guessing they may be either an Oriental, African or India style culture. I would say a Russian style, but I am guessing they will be trying to get radically away from another European style culture.

Sorry Dakota Strider but it was something russian:

And my comment is like the OP's on the 'why' Image IPB.

I'd love it to be something culturally completely different - ie: the aforementioned Asian, Indian or African style. Mix it up a bit, no? Or something like the Haradeim from Tolkien?

I think Russian or some other Eastern European influences would be awesome.

I don't see them having two "German" countries, and the Anderfels is clearly more German than Nevarra

That's a fairly huge difference.

And what I'm honestly hoping for the other lands in Dragon Age is that they aren't inspired by any real-world culture. Let Bioware imagine completely unique enviroments instaed of copy-pasting themes from real-life.

The Winters were out of Nevarra and their leader didn't have an unusual accent.

Odd note on that--I watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on cable last night, and Cassandra's accent/voice is so like the one belonging to Ilse the Austrian double-agent **** chick it was freakin' uncanny.

Well, that kinda figures, as the actress was a native English speaker (Irish, from Dublin), while the Cassandra actress was from Norfolk. They probably deliberately pronounce certain vowels/consonants a particular way.

Neither accent is particularly pronounced, though, most Germans, Austrians and German-Swiss sound a bit different, sometimes a lot. I wonder if it's based on Marlene Dietrich's accent perhaps, but I would have to check. I found Cassandra's accent rather indeterminate, and I know a lot of Germans.

As an aside, as this thread sort of 'faded away', people kept posting mainly in the 'environments' thread.
There's quite a bit of speculation on Nevarra and environs there, starting here (page 13):

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/315/index/11629862/13

and up to and including page 15.
