Thing is though, this whole "redeem online pass" thing isn't something you could accidentally implement... it's not like a bug, it'll be a tonne of implementation, integration and GUI code. It looks like there is some deliberate work on an "pay-to-play" system that they've accidentally switched on before the infrastructure is ready for it (i.e. you can't actually get these codes yet?).
It would be ironic, but not entirely surprising, if at a time when many games are going "free to play" (powered by micro-transactions, TF2, MTG and so on) that EA would implement an MMORPG type subscription service on a multiplayer game that is, really, just a bit of fluff... fun fluff yes, but it's not like ME3 MP is going to win any awards for "Multiplayer game of the year" or anything.
the online passes are used for ps3 and xbox users, so it's already there.
Aaaah - so they've somehow managed to roll out console code onto the PC version and they're going to have to try and untangle the whole mess... marvellous. This may take a while to fix then *sighs*
... although, thinking about it, it's probably server level - so they've (possibly) just munged up some user/registration/platform table that's supposed to determine which registered users are on which platforms and therefore which forms of authentication need to be implemented...
I have wondered how BW and EA expected to pay for all the servers they must be running to support the MP service...I mean - while I did pay full price for my vanilla hard copy of the game - I can't imagine much of the proceeds from my purchase were allocated to paying for an ongoing MP experience.
I suppose the success of the MP service means the suits in charge figure it's time to "monetize" ME3 MP (beyond the occasional BW points purchase from some fans).
No hard feelings to BW - they have a business to run, and clearly (given the current online pass fiasco as an example) the tech support issues alone must be getting expensive. I hope BW has great success with this, as I want them to be successful, so that I can look forward to future great RPG games from them.
BUT if/when the announcement is made about the ME3 MP platform changing to a pay to play model, I will bow out of ME3 MP permanently. To me, the biggest selling point for ME3 MP is that it is, in fact, free. Once that fact changes, so will my interest in the game.
your speculation has one itty bitty single player sized hole. how tightly the MP is tied to SP, if they make MP pay to play, they are looking at class actions all over the world.
