Not like it takes weeks to build back up to 20. It takes 3-4 rounds of Bronze/Silver to get back to level 20. Why NOT promote?
Love walking into a Silver match with a level 1 AA and just headshotting my way through and racking up XP.
Um... 3-4 rounds? Don't you think that's a bit of an exaggeration?

Seriously, my N7 rank is 180, and that's because I promoted 2 in order to get a Commendation pack in one of those events.
I just don't understand the appeal of grinding more and starting it over again.
I PERSONALLY PREFER having everything on level 20, so I can pick whatever character I want at the moment, and use them to maximum effeciency at all times, and thus have a higher chance of success.
So why exactly are people promoting, instead of keeping all classes at level 20 and enjoying the power?
You answered your question in your OP. I took the liberty of capsing the appropriate text.
It's just how some players get enjoyment out of their product.

It takes about 5-6 GOLD rounds usually to get one character to 20, depending on how you spend your creds and what cards you get. He is not exaggerating, he is simply talking out of his as*.
The last two levels alone cost a million xp. What silver lobby are you in?

- sometimes I liked playing Level 1 chars on Gold for the challenge
- I tested out a lot of different builds in the past and it was useful to start from scratch
- I like to have a clean class row, meaning only the chars I play should be available, everybody else is flagged "new"
- I have like 3500 points in single player and pretty much always enough (not that it really matters though)
- I usually save my credits and then buy packs for several millions which give me char cards mostly so promoting before and then having everything back to 15-18 afterwards is an option

I promote my characters because I'm trying to get my war assets to about, just over 10,000.
So In the future, After Ive moved onto other games for a bit and my Readiness Rating has dropped back to 50% again. If I want to go back and replay some single player anytime. I won't be necessary for me to work my ass of in MP for hours(When I 'just' want to play SP) so I can have a good ending for my Shepard. (E.g: That weird, 'Breathing in' scene)
Because lets face it, Years & years from now, There isn't going to be as many players in multiplayer as now. Heck It's the same with most games with multiplayer, Look back at Call of Duty 3(Sorry for this example). Its very hard to find many players in the lobbies now. And EA does shut down multiplayer servers.
So yeah, I may be wrong. Call me weird.(I probably am. xD), But that's just my opinion.

Because it's fun and allows me to try new builds without using a reset powers card. It also serves as an incentive to go back to bronze/silver.
This.
After awhile I get sick of gold and will promote a character just to have some fun and not be tense the entire time. Plus it saves me from having to use a reset powers card.

Because if we don't those stupid character cards have 0 value instead of at least allowing us to try out other builds. If we wanted to. At the very least, our e-peen rises.
