I've done some searching but haven't seen a clear answer anywhere.
I'm looking for a vanguard skills so i can use biotic explosions, without using nova.
I prefer to play my vanguard as a more long range build, using pull, and shockwave, and just use biotic charge to refill my shields as needed.
What extra skill should I pick to use with pull and shockwave to help maximize my ability to create some biotic explosions.
I have ashley so I don't have access to kaiden's Reave ability. But I can get access to Javik's ability.
I really like to use AR's and SMG's and hide in cover, Will I need to restart as a sentinal or engineer?
Shockwave is nice but it just goes in a straight line, and iirc, pull doesn't work on shielded enemies.
any tips or help is greatly appreciated.

Pull into Slam does a biotic detonation in this game. The reverse is not true, I would sometimes catch enemies in mid air just for the hell of it.
Dark Channel can be detonated by Shockwave, but I don't think it can detonate other powers. That and the cooldown is sort of long.
Stasis can setup detonations for Shockwave as well, but it can't be a detonator power.
Personally I used Slam on my Vanguard and ended up dropping Nova completely. I enjoy that power the most out of the above.

One thing I like to do since I run Liara and Garrus most of the time is have him Overload a target, then have Liara hit it with Warp, which sets off the burst and applies the warp effect, then use my own Shockwave (or other biotic power) to detonate the biotic explosion. Shockwave is nice because you can shoot it through cover.
Although there are all sorts of things you can do. A squad member's grenades can also be useful for turrets.

I like Reave for Vanguard. It functions as both a setup and a detonate power which can be handy. If charging isn't feasible, I can pull/reave a mook and do extra damage to nearby enemies. I usually have Garrus or Ash for dealing with shields but reave plus Liara's warp can help as well, especially when you are facing a lot of shielded/barriered dudes.

Reave is good, but you MUST get in close range to refill your shields (read: Biotic Charge) so it seems kinda pointless imo not to spec Nova.
IF you like biotic explosions and long range combat, try the Adept :\\ Vanguard is for those who like to get their hands dirty and blood-soaked.

Slam and Shockwave goes well with Liara's singularity. I rarely used pull because I just set off detonations using Javik and Liara.

Nova gets you killed if you don't use it tactically. I have countless deaths on single player and multiplayer that prove this fact!
My game play revolved around keeping my barrier up on single player. Nova was rarely used. So I used energy drain. When charging to restore your barrier is a bad idea, steal the protections of enemies to keep you in the game, while Javik and Liara create come cool biotic explosions (70% of which you're contributing too).
Online human vanguard you only have three powers. So online I ended up spamming the charge, nova combo. Useful and effective once you learn how to use it.
Little tip.
When nova is a bad idea, and you want an area of effect ability to kick some butt, use Shockwave. The safer alternative that creates a pulse train that can work on enemies behind cover even if you can't see the enemies you're launching it at.

That one isn't bad either since it can set up or detonate biotic explosions, and it gives you a bit of damage protection.

Reave, is a pretty good choice along with Slam/Dark Channel/Stasis, and having one of those powers, and having Liara, and Javik for your squad, is child's play, even on insanity.
