I think the combat is fun. I am playing the xbox 360 version. I have completed the game twice and have started my third playthrough. So far, I have played as a rogue and a warrior and they are both fun. I like rogues better though. They move so fast and it looks really cool. The dual weapon combat is my favorite. I wish the option was still available for warriors like it was in Origins. I don't have much interest in playing a mage, but I might try it once. I have been told that's the only way you get the chance to play with Hawke's brother instead of his/her sister.

Let me guess - you were a sword and shield warrior?

Two handed warriors charge into battle violently knocking everyone down like bowling pins.  When they strike, they jump 10 feet into the air and drop down like a bomb.

I found the two hand warrior and roguie to be equally interesting.  Sword and board = sword and bored.

First opinion...Hated it.But I tried it out anyway cause it was Dragon Age,and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.It's still crap compared to Origins though, but I will say the combat felt smoother. All they have to do now is keep that smooth feeling, slow it the hell down, take away the hack and slash elements and make it tactical again.

You are correct. Thanks for the advice. The next time I play a warrior, I'll try the two handed option. What two handed weapon would you recommend?

Sword-and-board plays similarly to two-handed, I found... unless you turn on Shield Defense.

My first ever, ever opinion?

"Why is the game freezing up and crashing every couple of minutes?"

If we're talking generalities after finishing, well. I thought it was disappointing but decent, with a great cast of characters in a slightly limp and lifeless world. I also throught the combat was generally more enjoyable, but ramped faster than it needed to be. I thought the ending was a contrived mess and a great example of character assassination for the sake of EPIC BOSS BATTLE AWW YEAH.

I still think that, though throwing mods at it and the subsequent dlc has done wonders for my opinion.

My first opinion (once I got past the unfortunate exaggarated intro) was that I really liked it. I expected to hate the voiced protaganist, but between liking his voice, and him nearly always saying what I wanted to say it won me over. I didn't begin to love DA2 until I started watching my wife play through the same scenes on her first playthrough.

We were both playing male rogues, but our dialogue was almost 100% different, even when picking the same choices. It was then we realized our Hawkes' entire personality was being shaped by our overall choices. Seeing that altered how I approached playing the game. I started playing the personality rather than always trying to pick the 'optimal' line for every situation.

It was a really interesting approach that made me love the game more, but I'm pretty certain I'm in a minority on that front. Had I not had the luxury of seeing my wife playing at the same time, I don't think I would have appreciated it nearly as much. Still my first Hawke is one of my favorite protaganists of all time. And my subsequent Hawkes were nothing like him. Which was surprising to me.

Well, I bought the equipment expansions.  The two swords that come in Warior Pack 1 are the ones I use.  They are world beaters and even trump the sword you get from Legacy.

I took the armor from Warrior Pack 2 because it rocks and it looks good.  I hate having pieces that don't match or look silly.  The warrior pack two armor looks the same as you upgrade pieces.  Towards Lvl 23 my gloves were only 1 star, but I was so overpowered I kept them for aesthetics.  That and the +2 to stat runes I had in each piece made the armor a huge stat boost (total of +8 to all stats).  One exception - I used the helmet from warrior pack 1 because it is better and I do not "show helmet" during play.

My advice for exciting gameplay is use the two handed talent tree and use the talents that allow you to replenish your stamina (BattleMaster: Deep Reserves, Second Wind.  Berzerker - I only take the specialization for the additional +10 stamina).  This way you can Scythe, Mighty Blow, Whirlwind, Smite, Silence, etc almost non-stop.

There are some fantastic Vanguard/Berserker/Reaver builds on this website, but the focus there is to do a lot of damage w basic attacks.  I fully admit these builds are overpowered.  But they are not as exciting to watch (possibly why one poster said two handers are the same as sword and bored - they're not the same if you don't want them to be).

So yeah - I go all two hander skills, some from the battle master tree, berserker for the extra stamina only, I take both taunt and pommel strike skills mostly for the taunt . . . but why have a weak pommel strike.

Also - people will crap on me for this - but I went full templar and used it to great effect.  Other people will say to go Vanguard . . . but again Vanguard is powerful but none of the powers "pop"or look exciting.  I really didn't need Vanguard.  By mid-game I was nigh indestructible and was laying enemies low with a quickness.  At end game when I had "disposable" talent points I put them into Vanguard.

Hope that helps.

Respectfully disagree.

Shield slam is boring compared to its counterpart Mighty Blow.  Overpower is boring compared to Whirlwind.  There is nothing cool like Scythe for sword n shield warriors.  And the reach advantage of a two hander allows that build to hit more opponents with one blow - the opponents that would be out of reach for the shield bearer.

I always left shield defense on - it was kind of the meat and potatoes ability for shield bearers.  It did make entering combat slower, but I was impervious and it increased my threat generation.

I guess that was one of the things that bored me about Sword n Bored - I was never in danger of getting hurt . . . ever.  It got to a point I just stopped monitoring Hawke's health because I knew there was no way he was going down.

I'm not sure what equipment expansions you are referring to or where to find them. Are they available in the xbox 360 version? I'll try your ideas for building skills when I play my next warrior. Thanks again for your advice and for responding to me.

My actual first impression was how the game was too dark, and it was so hard to see stuff. It was the same problem as in the demo, but I figured that since folks, like myself, mentioned how it was too dark that they would fix it, and given that the XBox demo hadnt been too dark it obviously would've been easy enough to fix. Sadly, we had to wait for a patch to finally fix the fact that we literally couldnt see certain things without working REALLY hard to, if we could at all. Brutal.

As for the game itself, it was easy to note a huge difference in game play, it was like a completely different game, and certainly not for the better. Why were enemies exploding? Why am I teleporting? Its easy to go on and on with negatives, but on the positive side the graphics were noticably better, the story was interesting at times, and the whole 'time jump' thing with the narrator was a cool and unique concept. So it wasnt all bad, but it definitely didnt make a great first impression.

When I first started playing I thought it looked pretty cool, but eventually the re-used maps and button mashing combat started to bore me. And alot of the quest started to seem like chores.

I also quickly became disapointed with companion armor and the loot.

I thought t was okay. There were some cool sequences but it kind of all blended together do to the quest structure. The second time it was a lot better because I turned the subtitles on and listened to party banter and experimented with different party members to find amusing banter. If they had more variety in level design and ways to customize companions it would have been a great game instead of a solid game.

Um, amazing *_* To the point where I finally went out and bought an xbox (I had first played the game at my brother-in-law's house). In fact, it made me join this BSN. Really, it changed my life. First time I ever became a fan of a video game.

Wow, this is bad.

The more I played it I thought, wow this is even worse than I thought.

Now I think it's total garbage and BioWare should be ashamed.

Utter crap...

Thank you. Your advice has been very helpful.

Now I am going to get myself back to the original topic. I guess the reason I wasn't disappointed the first time I played DA2 was because I knew what to expect. When DA2 came out I was just getting started on Origins. I had plenty of time to read everyones comments and complaints about DA2. I will admit that I miss the ability to talk to the companions whenever I want to, like we could in Origins. I like all the companions in DA2, but I didn't feel as connected with them as I did to my Origins companions. I still think the combat is better in DA2. Maybe it's because I like the faster pace. It may not be as realistic, but it's cool to watch.

I thought it was pretty good. It had its flaws, but it was alright (definitely not as good as DAO though).

I wasn't fond of all the reused environments (Fenris never cleaned up the corpses? Really? <_<)
I also wasn't fond of having less control of the dialogue and the shoehorning of my character into situations where they gave me only 2 options but clearly there should have been more than that.

But I did really like the improved combat; it was certainly less boring than DAO and the more inclusive party banter was good (the PC could now say something too!) even if I couldn't control what was being said. I also liked venturing to another part of Thedas and learning more about the world which I first discovered in DAO. I thought the cameos were cool too (though I later reversed my thoughts on that). The art I was so-so about but the music was awesome as usual.

That was my first impression anyway.... ;)

edit: spelling and format fix. :pinched:

The prologue was terrible, I had several friends watch me play through it who where considering buying the game and they all swore the game off after seeing the prologue and asked me to stop playing it for them.

Chapter 1: The game picked up a bit, this chapter was decent, the , I found an item, and know who wants it quests where poorly designed and the reused environments where not pervasive enough to be a problem.

Chapter 2: The story had a good pace, this was the best part of the game by far. The problems with chapter 2 where not in its main theme but in other things. Three years pass but everyone acts like three days passed, the characters dont react to any passage of time, Hawke apparently takes three years to develop a relationship with a guy/girl that would normally take three weeks. Everyone is in the same location, hasnt moved and has nothing new to say for the most part. The reused environments that still show the same cave walls you cant pass through on the minimap and the item quests are really starting to get annoying.

Chapter 3: Worst part of the game, I didnt think they could make it worse then the prologue, but Ill be damned if they didnt pull it off. I wont go into details and pick apart everything that is wrong with chapter 3, I dont wish do dedicate many hours to that long of a post.

Prologue: This feels  very cheap and rushed. The dialogue doesn't feel natural and I'm really not liking Hawke's voice.

ACT I: Ehh. Not a fan of the combat, or the artstyle but surely the rest of the game will get better.

ACT II: This Arishok dude is pretty cool. It's a shame the game keeps railroading me against him.

ACT III: ...Dafuq just happened?

------------------

So overall not very good.

Hmm to me the first run was awesome, i didn't know what to expect and well basically never played a Bioware game before. With my purchase of DA2 i got ME2 for free, and after i finished DA2 i was wondering what DAO/A would be like so purchased those as well. Eventually trying ME2 and buying ME1 and 3 in the process.

But after playing DAO/A i kinda saw the shortcomings in DA2 but that view kinda improved when i imported my DAO savegame. DA2 just doesn't feel as epic as DAO/A + there will be no more DLC/Addons for DA2 which makes me sad.

Let's just hope DA3 has the best of DAO/A+DA2 in it.
